*Background*

Overview:
I’m looking to bring a strong sense of purpose in my career by transitioning fully to social impact. I’ve always wanted to go into social impact full-time, but I needed to build a niche and valuable skillset before doing so. Regarding marketable skills, I feel ready now, but I need an MBA to help me transition.

Work experience:
I'm currently a Product Manager in Internet Business in a Multinational Telecommunications company. I have 5.5 years of full-time experience, all in Telecommunications product management. The firm I work for is one of the top ones in my country, Bangladesh, and is a part of the 10th largest mobile network operator in the world. I've gotten regular, formal awards (Marketing Award for six quarters out of the twelve quarters of my employment till date + Employee of the month multiple times) at work and my portfolio has increased with time. I can back my achievements with solid numbers.

Some career highlights
- Successful completion of 1-month international assignment & placement in HQ
- Former Management Trainee with fast track progression to Managerial role, within only 2.5 years of my career
- Project Manager for the first telecom merger in Bangladesh
- Product Manager for Facebook's Freebasics program in Bangladesh, which focuses on giving internet connectivity to the bottom of the pyramid, launching it for the first time in my country

On the side, I'm a director at my family business which focuses on government and non-profit sector consulting. I do business advisory for non-profits, and one of these non-profits was founded by a Harvard Kennedy alum and an Oxford Said MBA alum. My area of expertise is "mobile tech & communications for development".

Extracurriculars:
During my undergrad, I won multiple international & national awards in social entrepreneurship competitions. One of that was GSEC organized by the University of Washington's Foster School of Business. My team had beat out MIT in that competition. I was also awarded by Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, for winning Yunus Centre's social entrepreneurship idea competition. I've coordinated nationwide charity drives back in my undergrad, 100+ people reporting to me.

Other coursework:
I finished MBA Math and I scored 100% in all of the MBA Math courses.

Nationality: Bangladeshi

Sex: Male

*Stats*

GRE & TOEFL Score:
My GRE total is 328, with a breakdown of 169 in Verbal, 159 in Quant, 4.5 in AW. I'm also done with my TOEFL with a 113/120.
I plan to resit the GRE to raise my Quant, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make the time for it.

Undergrad GPA:
I graduated from the best business school in my country. My alma mater has alums in top business schools all over the world, including the business schools that I plan to apply to.

My 3.13/4 CGPA (Major- Finance) is measly though. I dived into ECAs during my first two years, achieving great success at the expense of my academics. Reprioritized and did very well in academics during my third year. During my fourth year, I contracted Hepatitis E just before my final exams, and my CGPA took a nosedive. My last year’s GPA was 3/4 versus my third year’s GPA of 3.7/4. I had the choice of postponing my studies for a year or taking a bad hit to my CGPA, & I chose the latter due to financial reasons. Anyways, even after taking my horrible fourth year in account, my last two years' CGPA is 3.35/4, so there is an upward trend there.

*MBA Info*

Goal of MBA:
Working in social impact on the side has actually inspired me to enter social impact full-time post-MBA, perhaps joining my family's business on a full-time basis, and/or starting a sister organization to the family business focused on my area of expertise. My area of expertise, Telecommunications, is very important for social impact in my country, Bangladesh. Our internet connectivity is almost entirely mobile communications dependant.

Working in a large private organization has not given me the training I need to embark on an entrepreneurial venture or engage full-time in expanding a family business. I need an MBA to make me ready.

Hi All,

I have been preparing for GMAT for quite some time now but due unavailability of the test I'm not able to give the test in Gurgaon. (I don't want to give it online because I feel I cannot give it without pen & paper). However I just took Executive Assessment so that I can apply to a few schools which I already targeted I'd be applying. Specifically, I want to apply to NYU tech MBA which considers EA score for all its programs. So, below is the details of my profile, it would be great if someone can evaluate that and tell me if I should apply or not.

Executive assessment score: 157
Nationality: Indian
UG College: Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (B.Tech.)
AIEEE rank (An exam which is used in Indian UG colleges for engineering admissions): 12714 (Top 1 percentile)
Work Experience: > 4 years, will be 5 years at the start of the program

Current: Product Manager at Sprinklr India Pvt. Limited (for last 1 year)
Past:
Lead Product Engineer at Sprinklr India Pvt. Ltd. (6 months)
Senior Product Engineer at Sprinklr India Pvt. Ltd. (6 months)
Product Engineer at Sprinklr India Pvt. Ltd. (2.5 years)
Product Engineering Intern at Sprinklr India Pvt. Ltd. (6 months)

Ironically, I started working in Sprinklr just after college and haven't worked in any other company. (I feel changing job very often is overrated :D )

In college, I started my own startup (for about 10 months) and won one of the ideathon prizes in IIM-Ahmedabad (one of the top B-school in India) and IIM-A also offered my startup incubation but due to money crunch, I couldn't carry that forward.

Apart from that,
- I like teaching and I've 8 months of freelance teaching with Interviewbit, now Scalar academy (e-learning company in India).
- I was teaching assistant of one of the computer science courses in my college in the last semester.
- I also used to teach while I was preparing for AIEEE so that I can earn some extra money while preparing for exams. I really enjoy teaching and I feel it is a very integral part of the industry as well.

I want to go for NYU Tech MBA because I have been working in tech for a long time and being a tech product manager, it makes more sense for me to join to stay in the tech itself. I don't want to go for consultancy, finance, investment banking, etc and this is why I want to avoid a 2-years MBA.

LORs: As I have worked closely with the CTO for about 5 years, he'd definitely write me a LOR. The company has grown from about 400 employees to 2000 employees in the past 4 years. As a product manager, I deal with clients and I can get one of the LORs from one of the clients (or my associate director who's an IIM-A alumni).

This is my full profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ajay-gaur-60071884/
Also, I was an avid front end developer and at one time, I was in the top 1% on StackOverflow: https://stackoverflow.com/users/2648216/ajay-gaur

Thanks a lot. :)

Hello ajaygaur319,

The average experience for NYU Tech MBA is higher at 6.3 years as it is a one-year MBA. However, with 5 years, your experience should not pose a big challenge. Your quick promotions at work indicate that you must have created impact at work, but these are the experiences you would want to highlight in your application. You haven't talked about your EC post college here (except for coding may be). AdCom want to see a well-rounded personality and examples of contribution to community beyond personal development go a long way in strengthening your application.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for evaluating.
- I was a student mentor at interview bit (e-learning company) while I was in my job.
- Furthermore, I still teach Maths at my junior school because the school doesn't have those many resources
- Also, I forgot to mention in my profile that I worked with an NGO (Aastha Sansthan) on procuring proof that government schools aren't following Right To Education law which was then mandated by the Indian government. I stayed in a village in Rajasthan to work with that NGO.

Hello, I would love to get a profile review for Part-Time MBA at Stern.

Background and Nationality: Asian-Canadian (Korean), Male, 29 years of age, 3 years of work experience (4 years at matriculation)

Education:
Bachelor of Administrative Studies, Finance Major (Top 15 - University in Canada)

GMAT: Currently studying, aiming for 680+
Undergraduate GPA: 2.95 (Letter Grade converted to 4.0 scale)

Work Experience:
- Corporate Banking (2017-current), General Industries: Currently working for a Korean Bank in NYC, front office lending business to various mid-large cap corporations

Short-term Post MBA goal:
- To excel and advance in the current role. I Hope that the MBA will expand my professional skillset for a move from technical to more of a management role.

Long-term Post MBA goal:
- Return to Korea and be involved in the family business working on real estate development and management

Extra-Curriculars (Undergraduate):
1. Team Captain of University golf team during the last two years of UG: 2015~2017
(The competition level for Canadian golf is not as prestigious as the NCAA Division 1 in the States, rather more equivalent to D2 or D3 with no scholarships).
In the final year, organized/planned/hosted the first ever University Invitational, and have raised funds by inviting other university teams across the state (province) to compete
2. Board member for College Golf Club: 2016~2017 (VP of Internal Affairs):
worked with the club to host outing events (e.g. golf range, screen golf) and to give golf lessons to school club members. Also acted as the liaison/bridge between the Golf Team and the Golf club for communications and events
3. Certified Snowboard Instructor with license: taught private lessons in the winter during UG as a part time job

(Unfortunately, I do not have much post-undergrad ECs other than playing golf as a hobby)

As I am working full-time in NYC, my only target school currently is NYU part time. I would really appreciate your thoughts if my target is realistic as my undergrad GPA is low. Thank you!

Hi Juuniebee,

You seem to stand a fair shot at the NYU part-time program. Starting with stats, yes, your GPA is quite low and to offset this, you need a stronger GMAT with a 690+ score. About your work-ex, you have not provided many details of your work, so it would be difficult for me to comment. Your short-term Post-MBA goals make sense but I could not connect your short term and long term goals. If you want to eventually enter the family business of real estate, why do you want to enhance your skillset in your current role and industry in the short term? For your ECs, while they are interesting, they are a bit outdated. But do not worry because you still pursue your hobby and you can bring this narrative out. More importantly, you need to exhibit your personal values and characteristics which do not mandatorily require ECs. So, play on your personal and professional strengths. I would reiterate to know some more details, like if you have taken some leadership projects, or what is the impact of your role in the company?. Alternatively, you are welcome to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your work experience, career goals, and chances to NYU in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Thank you!

I feel I have a pretty non-traditional background (at least when compared to the studs I see on this subreddit) and so I'm not exactly sure how to invest my time in the next 12 months to bolster my application and I would appreciate any feedback/advice.

Why I Want An MBA:

I know this is pretty unoriginal, but my goal is to get into consulting for 3-4 years because I really like how consultants work on a specific project for a few months and then switch assignments. This appeals to me because I don't see myself doing one thing for 20 years and I also would enjoy the travel component. I feel like I'm pretty analytical and so I'd like the challenge of digging into different problems. From there, I would like to found my own creative consulting firm.

Stats:

GMAT: 760 (Q48 V47 IR8) (I studied my @$$ off for this test because I wanted to show that I was ready for the academic rigour of the MBA program and that I really want to get into an MBA program)

CGPA: 9.5/12 (The last 2.5 years my CGPA is perfect and that's because that was when I figured out I wanted to go to bschool and that schools would look at my grades. In Canada, bschools only look at the last 2 years of undergrad, but I know in the US they look at all the years)

Education: Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (Graduated with High Honours)

Work Experience:

Suiting: 2 years experience fitting men for suits and luxury brand clothing and providing styling consultation.

Visual Merchandiser: 2 years experience designing and creating visual displays in-house for a well established, very large, higher-end store. Present the brand messaging while taking into account sales, trends and promotions.

Professional Actor: 5 years part-time experience acting in educational settings for the 6 local universities/colleges and councils. Have also starred in various educational videos.

Extracurriculars:

Create art and have an art instagram page. Workout 4X/week (if that counts?). Play chess. Have worked at polling stations for several federal, provincial and municipal elections.

Nationality:

Canadian-born to two immigrant parents escaping war torn Sri Lanka. Both parents are extremely working class and grinders and so I come from humble but proud beginnings and I'm forever grateful to them.

Thoughts?

So yeah, that's my bio so far but I'm planning on applying in the Fall of 2021 so I have 12 months to invest (other than the time spent working full-time) and I'm not exactly sure what to lean into? Should I take hbx core or does my GMAT cover my analytical thinking portion? Should I keep creating art and try to grow my instagram? Should I volunteer somehow in this pandemic? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi, and thank you for writing! I think you have a fascinating background - keep in mind that MBA programs are seeking a very diverse range of candidates.

I think your academics are solid - given that fantastic GMAT score, I don't think that a supplemental course is fully necessary, though you can certainly take one if you feel that it would provide good pre-MBA preparation. Regarding the next 12 months (props to you for thinking ahead!) here is what I would focus on:

1. Keep on creating that art and developing that Instagram page
2. Being involved in community service in an area of your choosing, especially in a leadership capacity, would definitely help boost your profile in addition to providing genuine personal fulfillment. Here's an idea - how about reaching out to organizations that provide art therapy, given your interest in art?
3. Conduct informational interviews (perhaps with Stern alumni) with consultants, to be able to get a clear idea of what their day-to-day looks like and the skillsets that they use - this way, by the time you apply, you will be prepared to clearly communicate your interest in and aptitude for this career path
4. Start researching each program you're interested in (virtual events and classes, speaking with students/alumni) so that you can make a strong case for why Stern and the other programs you target are a strong fit for you based on their culture and resources within and outside of the classroom.

Hope that helps! :)

Hi, and thanks for writing. Congratulations on successfully establishing your own business!
Regarding your GPA, you'll want to address it in the Optional Essay in a way that shows ownership and responsibility while highlighting any extenuating circumstances. To help offset it further, you can try boosting your GMAT score and taking a supplemental quant course (such as UC Berkeley Math for Management, an extension course I highly recommend).
Are you involved in any extracurricular and community pursuits? This would also help boost your profile and give you leadership experience.

Based on the info you've provided so far, I do think Stern will be a reach but NUS and ISB will be more attainable.

Hope that helps!

Hello GMAT Club Community,

Wanted some advice on my profile and my admit chances for Stern:

27 year old (while matriculating) Indian Male (NON-ENGINEER).

GMAT: 710 (Q47, V41, IR4)

Education:
10th: 90%
12th: 86.5% (Humanities)

Undergrad GPA: 3.3
Bachelor's in Media & Communication from Symbiosis Intl. University (#1 Ranked program in the country)
Specialization: Advertising.

Work Ex: 4 years, 8 months at the time of joining.
Year 0-2: Worked as a copywriter & creative strategist at a digital advertising firm in Mumbai
Highlights -
- Successfully launched the first advertising campaign for the official Swedish Tourism board in India.
- Successfully set up and launched a leading health insurance brand in India online.
- Won the coveted Abby Awards for Creativity & Innovation (Indian equivalent of Cannes) twice.
- Won multiple clients through pitches, contributing significantly to company revenue.

Year 2-3
- Pivoted from a creative to an analytical role, starting as a Business Analyst at a leading ad-tech & performance marketing firm in India (Merkle Sokrati)
- Got promoted in 7 months, handled spends worth $200k a month, across verticals such as E-commerce, OTT, FinTech & BFSI.
- Mentored 3-4 different people with successful results.
- Won multiple clients through pitches, contributing significantly to company revenue.

Year 3 - present

Extra-Curricular & Community
- 2 2-month Internships at NGOs (Teach for India & Door Step School)
- Sports Captain in school & college, representing both at school & district levels.

Post-MBA Goals:
Strategy Consulting.
Throughout my varied roles so far, I have served clients across levels in different capacities, with highly successful results (can get stellar recommendations from them)
With my experience as a creative strategist + analyst, I bring a balanced combination of creativity & analytics, and I feel i would be well-suited to a consulting role.

I have 12 months before submitting my application. Would love to hear about my chances of getting an admit (I am open to applying in Early action), or how I could bolster my application (particularly the quant aspect) in this period.

Would an HBS CORe course help here?

Hi,

Would really appreciate a profile evaluation folks.

Male - Pakistan, 29. Will be 30 by the time I start the program next Fall.

BBA, 3rd Ranked B-School in the country GPA 3.3/4
MBA, From a Top 2 business school in the country, GPA 3.06/4
GMAT - 750
CFA Level 1 and 2 passed.
I am hoping my GMAT and CFA Level 1 and 2 can compensate for the lower GPA?
Extra Curr: Have been President of various societies in university, and involved in a lot of charity work as well. Also have been the founding member of official supporters club of an England based football team in Pakistan. Years of handwork and pure dedication have gone into it, and the community is still running strong.

WE: 5 years by Fall 21 (All in Pakistan)

16 months with a Digital Media Start Up. Started off as a Marketing Analyst, and got a promotion within 6 months.
Associate Markets & Deals, 9 months with a Fortune 500
Financial Sales Analyst, US based Forbes Cloud 100 company. 7 months.
15 months at a gaming start up. Here I was responsible for scaling the product and the entire strategy formulation.
Currently working as an Account Manager for a US based Insurance Company in their Pakistan office. Just started 2 months ago.

My biggest concern is the hopping I did in my 2nd and 3rd job (9+7 months) and if it would come back to haunt me? I blame my ambitious self for it, since I really felt I couldn't grow in those roles, and switched jobs frequently. I would also be willing to wait another year and start in Fall 2022 instead if my job consistency would be a problem for the adcoms.

Reasons for doing a 2nd MBA are simple. The Pakistan MBA experience happened when I was too young. Most of what I learned in class was pure theory that I couldn't connect with, as there was no work experience to set the context. Students, especially in Pakistan jump on the MBA bandwagon right after completing their undergraduate degree, and I did the same. It is also very common for universities to select students for their MBA program with no prior work experience.

Secondly, and most importantly, while I have worked in international firms in Pakistan, my aspirations are no longer limited to Pakistan only. The 2-year Pakistan MBA degree hasn't helped in taking the leap into the international arena. Hence, an MBA from a top global B-school would be passport to a truly global career.

Post MBA goal is to get into Tech or Management Consulting ideally in London or Dubai.

Will really appreciate honest feedback. Thanks in advance!
