White Male, 25
GMAT : 710 (Q48, V39, IR8)

Lots of extracurricular/volunteer experience before and in college.
Significant "extracurricular" experience outside client work at my firm.

Short term goal:
Move into a product management role immediately out of MBA.

Demographic
28F Black American (parents are Caribbean immigrants)

GMAT
710 - Q44 V44. “Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.”

Undergraduate
3.45 GPA. BFA in Industrial Design (Product Design) from a school that’s widely considered the top design school in the US. Lots of clubs that are either inherently leadership based (peer mentor, freshman orientation leader), or where I held leadership positions.

Work Experience
A little over 4 years of full time by matriculation. Mostly in data analytics across a couple of industries, most recently marketing strategy. One title promotion at my last job and I’m up for one at my current job that’ll happen between application and interview (if I get one). Supplemental work experience includes starting a medical nonprofit with my family (on my parents’ island) hosting and producing a PBS documentary show, and pro bono PR work for a startup toy company.

Post MBA Goals
I want to work in product management so I can combine my education and experience in a meaningful way. Their NYC location is attractive because of the possibility of working at a fashion house (tons of product there) but I’m also interested in emerging tech or media as well.

Hi, and thanks for writing! For the part-time program, I think one of the most important factors will be your career progression in those 5 years (have you received promotions and accolades?) and the clarity behind your short and long-term goals. Be sure to articulate how the MBA will help you in the short-term (while you're still an engineer), why you want to be a PM, and how an MBA will prepare you for that goal.

Given that you're applying from a competitive demographic, getting your GMAT 40+ higher would be beneficial as well.

Hope that helps!

Hi everyone
I just finished my GMAT and I'm in the process of beginning my applications to part time programs. My top choices are Stern and Tepper. I'm interested in Product Management. I would like to start next Fall ideally. Full time is not an option because I would like to continue working and I'm on a work visa.
Can you please evaluate my profile?

GMAT: 660 (Q 47, V 34)
Gender: Female
Current profession: Software engineer at a big investment bank in NYC. 5 years experience
MBA interested concentration: Product Management
Masters: Have a masters degree in Computer Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University. GPA 3.4
Undergrad: Bachelors from India in Computer Science and Engineering. GPA 3.8
Volunteering: Mentor at Girls who code, Minds Matter, founder of a women in STEM group, product manager for a volunteer group who develop software for NGOs.

Hi, and thanks for writing! A couple of points:

- Given your competitive demographic, I do recommend retaking GMAT for a 730+
- This program is geared towards those who have experience in and want to pursue tech-heavy careers. Therefore, you would need to reframe your long-term goal, as it doesn't quite align with the tech MBA. Entering product management in the medium term, and then becoming a product leader, would make more sense if that interests you.

Hope that helps a bit - Happy New Year!

Hi, and thanks for writing! While you have a solid GMAT score, the quant score is on the lower side (a solid quant score is 46/47+) so I would recommend retaking, and if increasing the score isn't an option, demonstrating in the optional essay how you've shown quantitative skills in college and at work.

Product managers (typically, but not always) have engineering backgrounds. Based on your experience, I'd consider product marketing management at a tech company, or marketing at a fashion house or retailer (these are two different goals, so for the purposes of your application choose one and explain your motivations behind it).

Hope that helps - Happy New Year!

Hello everyone

I am a 26 year old female from India.
GMAT : 760
Education : BTECH from a tier 2 college with GPA 8.25/10
Work experience : 4+ years of experience in a leading IT company in the country. I work in the automotive domain wherein I am involved in the development, validation and deployment of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System ECU) softwares. For the past 1 year, I am in Japan, at client location, leading a team of 10 (both at onsite and offshore) wherein we are involved in the In Vehicle ECU Software development and deployment of the Driver Attention Alert System. I directly interact with our client so as to completely understand and analyse their requirements and then devise the strategy to achieve the same.
Extra-curricular : I am an avid reader and a writer. I have an online blog with over 20 published articles and over 1k followers.
Apart from this, I am a trained Bharatnatyam (Indian classical dance form) dancer, practicing dance right from the tender age of 6. I have performed at over 200 stages and have received many accolades throughout my school and university tenure.
Volunteer activities : Right from the age of 17, I have been involved in several NGO activities. While I was pursuing my 11th and 12th, I used to provide home tuitions for 10-12 under privileged students. Then while in college, I volunteered with Teach for India. I have also volunteered with Help Age India and taught our elderly basic Math and English.
I would like to know my chances at top Bschools in the world.

Hi, and thanks for writing! A few thoughts/questions:

- 720 is a solid GMAT score, but given how competitive admissions is for Indian applicants, any chance you might be able to increase it? Even 10 points could help
- Have you been involved in any post-collegiate extracurriculars?
- I see that your current company is a Swedish MNC- do you have work experience outside of India as well (either projects or a rotation)? International experience can really benefit an application
- How confident are you regarding your letters of recommendation?

Given that 2 of Stern's deadlines have passed, that you're relatively early in your career, and that you're applying from a heavily represented demographic, I would consider waiting until the first round next year to apply. In the meantime, you can address the areas above as needed.

Hope that helps a bit!

Hi, and thanks for writing - I see that you've posted on multiple boards so I'll just respond here.

You have progressive work experience at prominent companies, so as long as you can get very strong recommendations from two supervisors that can attest to your performance, potential, and growth (esp. vs. peers) and fully communicate your professional impact on your resume, this part of your application will be solid, though it would be preferable for you to have more international experience. On your resume, definitely do highlight the different nationalities/locations of the teams you worked with.

Regarding undergraduate performance - a 2.78 GPA out of 4.0 is considered low, but I'm not sure if the conversion you used is quite accurate - MBA programs don't require you to convert your GPA as they are familiar with various colleges' grading scales. For Indian schools, to assess GPA I generally look at the percentile and the graduation distinction (i.e. First Honours). Your GMAT score of 730 is solid, but depending on how your GPA is, you might even consider retaking for 740+ - GMAT score standards are very high for Indian applicants at top U.S. programs.

Regarding your extracurriculars - I see that you were heavily involved in university. Have you had any post-college involvement as well? This would strengthen your profile.

Overall, I'd need more info on your undergrad performance and outside of work activities to be able to assess fully, but I think that as of now, Stern would be more of a reach. I'd expand your search to the U.S. 15-25 as well. If you are open to the U.K., I'd also consider LBS, Oxford, and Cambridge.

Hope that helps a bit!

That is impressive - congratulations! It's certainly notable - do mention it on your resume and on the extracurriculars portion of your application.

A 3.0/4.0 is still a below-average GPA - I strongly suggest retaking the GMAT to help offset it further if you feel you can increase it.

Hope that helps!
