All,
Been a long time lurker so wanted to give back with this post. I took the GMAT Online on July 30th and got my score today (August 3rd).
Background:
I have been working in Energy and now Manufacturing (2 different Employers) for about the last ~5 years with roles in planning, operations, engineering, and analytics. My wife and I welcomed our first child last year and we are now starting to get a full nights sleep. I decided I want to do my MBA starting in 2021 as my personal life is only going to get more busy. I am targeting top 20 part time and weekend MBA programs. I signed up for the GMAT on July 1st and took it on July 30th (online version) so had ~ 1 month of preparation. Ideally, I would have a little more time to study but realistically, I wasn't going to have the patience to study for many months while trying to still be a decent husband, father, and employee (lol).
Education: Undergrad and Masters in Engineering
Materials: Official GMAT Questions/ Question Bank/ Official Practice Tests
Study Strategy: Do 30-50 practice questions a day from the GMAT Official Practice, Focus on Medium and Hard questions, Review incorrect answers (don't review ones that you know you aren't going to remember how to apply/do)
Weekend 1 June 4th: GMAT Practice test 1 670 Q42 V41 IR7. My pace is terrible on this one and I realize how much faster i need to move.
Weekend 2 June 11th: GMAT Practice test 2 740 Q49 V42 IR8. I felt good during this one.
Weekend 3 June 18th: GMAT Practice test 3 710 Q49 V38 IR8
Weekend 4 June 25th: GMAT Practice test 4 5 and 6 (730 Q48 V42), (710 Q48 V40 IR7), (710 Q48 V40 IR8)
Mindset going into the exam: You are shooting for over 700, do not get bogged down in pride and waste like 5 minutes on one quant question, remember to "trim the fat" on sentence comprehension, don't read too much into the reading comprehension and reasoning questions
Experience with the Exam:
Test is supposed to be at 9:30am and i login to realize that my test is scheduled for 2 weeks away in August. I panic and frantically keep refreshing on the reschedule calendar to find a time on July 30th (my mind is made up at this point I am taking this darn test today, my wife left home early to drop dogs at camp and our son at daycare so i cannot let her down lol, plus I am pretty over studying). After 20 minutes of constantly refreshing, a 10:30am pops up. I am relieved and start to register for that slot. Fast forward 20 seconds, and the time slot is no longer available. Back to panic mode. Eventually (so lucky) I was able to snag a 12:30 PM appointment at around 10:30am. I make a snack and take a quick nap.
I wake up rejuvenated at around 11:30am ready to take the test. Quant seemed easier than the practice exams, so I am assuming I missed some dumb questions as I definitely under-performed in this section. No Break. Right into Verbal. I feel pretty good and halfway through the proctor messages me and says to stop whispering. I apologize as I must have been doing this unconsciously. I feel pretty good about this section. 5 minute break. I stop the break 2.5 minutes early because I am exhausted and ready to finish this thing. IR seems way easier than practice, so again must have made a stupid mistake.
I get my score and feel pretty good about it. With more preparation I think I could crack 740+ especially with Quant was below expected (I am sure I made a few silly errors)
720 46Q 44V 7IR
My wife says good job and hands me our child so she can go to the bathroom.
That's pretty much it!
