STEM MBA Programs - Master List

Top STEM MBA Programs

In big part for my own sake to keep track of all the MBA programs that have recently been STEM-designated and STEM-certified, I wanted to put together a master list with links to confirming the designation/requirements that students may have. Keep in mind that a number of programs (almost all) allows to take extra classes and get an extra MS degree to receive the STEM certification but often that requires an extra year and cost. In these cases, the MBA programs alone are sufficient to provide you with the STEM designation.

STEM MBA Programs:

• Anderson (UCLA) FT and EMBA are both Stem certified (Anderson was one of the last Top 15 schools to receive STEM designation - 6/16/2020)
• Booth: Chicago Booth - Initially only 2 concentrations (Business Analytics and Analytics Finance) were eligible but as of April 3, ALL concentrations are STEM-eligible)
• Carlson (Minnesota) Link to the Official announcement from Carlson
• Columbia FT MBA and EMBA are all designated as STEM as of March 5, 2020. Link to the Official announcement from CBS
• Cornell Johnson (Originally only the Tech MBA was STEM-certified but as of 4/24, Both 2-year and 1-year FT MBA programs are STEM-certified)
• Darden: Darden has STEM designation for Management Science Specialization
• Fisher MBA is STEM-certified as of Jan 2021. School page for the degree and classes required is here
• Foster is one of the last late-comers to the STEM, announcing their designation success in October 2020. As with other programs, the applicant has to pick the Management Science track.
• Fuqua (Duke) - MSTeM (management science and technology management) Track offers STEM designation as of April 2019
• Georgetown McDonough School of Business - Full Time & Flex MBA - STEM - Announced on April 30
• Goizueta (Emory) - 2 and 1-year MBA students are eligible for the STEM Business Analytics Specialization as of Feb 2021
• Haas - November 14, 2019 is unique in that all 3 of its programs: FT, Evening, and Executive are STEM-designated
• Johnson (Cornell) has achieved STEM designation for the 2-year Management Science MBA and 1-year Management Science MBA as well as Tech MBA. The official announcement came out on April 24, 2020
• Jones (Rice) achieved STEM designation for all of their MBA programs in the summer of 2020
• Kelley - added 3/2/2020 per the Official School announcement
• Kellogg - Nov 22, 2019 Management Science concentration as well as the MMM program
• Kenan-Flagler UNC - STEM designation approved/published on Feb 24, 2021
• Marshall (USC) has designated its Management science specialization as STEM-certified in May 2019! The official announcement for Fall 2019 is here

• McDonough - launched a new major/track - Management Science that became STEM-accredited in April 2020
• Mendoza (Notre Dame) MBA/MSBA - 2-year joint degree program is STEM designated
• Olin Business School - Full Time MBA - STEM. Announced on April 23rd
• Owen (Vanderbilt) STEM-certified on 3/23/2020 per official announcement
• Ross (Michigan) - has been announced unofficially. Official announcement posted Jan 2020
• Scheller (Gerogia Tech) - Unclear. No confirmation available
• Simon (Rochester) - all concentrations are STEM-eligible - this is a differentiator
• Sloan (MIT) - has been announced unofficially. Official confirmation is still NOT available as of 3/26/2020
• Stern (NYU) - Announced 12/2019 via email. Official confirmation is not posted yet.
• Stanford designated MBA, MSx, and PhD as Stem as of 5/25/2020
• Tepper - official, confirmed in Nov 2019
• UC Davis - official announcement
• UC Irvine Mirage official announcement
• USC Marshall- STEM-designated as of Fall 2019
• Warrington (Florida) - not certified as of 12/19/2020
• Wharton - Business Analytics major is STEM-qualified since 2018
• Wisconsin (Madison) - STEM designated for supply chain management and operations management
• WP Carey - official announcement on 3/26/2020
• Yale - Announced in March the the Management Science concentration is STEM eligible.

Why is STEM Important?

STEM designation is really only important to international applicants who are subject to work permit requirements and would need an H1B to stay in the United States after their OPT (Optional Practical Training) expires. STEM allows applicants to get a 3-year OPT instead of the 1-Year which in turn allows a much longer time-frame to find a job and provide applicants with 4 opportunities to get an H1B instead of just 2, so it doubles the chances and buys time in other words.
