As illegal activity becomes more and more common in suburban communities, thieves are able not only to divert used car parts from various vehicles, but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and sell the information to dubious criminals.

(A) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and sell Correct

(B) but also to steal valuable information that includes residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling Incorrect

parallelism error - .......steal ......and selling .....
that includes - wrong, such as require to express example

(C) but also stealing valuable information including residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and selling Incorrect

parallelism error - .....not only to divert......but also stealing.....

(D) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, to sell Incorrect

thieves are able to steal valuable information to sell the information to dubious criminals

double information seems wordy

(E) but also stealing valuable information such as resident addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling Incorrect

parallelism error - .....not only to divert......but also stealing.....

Here three items are presented in the list, but there is no parallel marker 'and' to complete the list.
Eliminate.

A) Is the answer

not only x but also y parallel marker this follows

let us eliminate other choices

to steal and selling does not make sense , so eliminate b)

stealing and selling does not make sense with to divert - so eliminate c)

here to steal makes sense with to divert but now we have third item in parallel to steal and is not showing the intent as per the original sentence is activity along with to steal and sell , so eliminate d) also

Not only but also: The word able is once outside, so parallelism needs to be maintained between divert used car parts and steal valuable information.

thieves were able
-- Not only to divert used car parts from various vehicles
-- but also to steal valuable information

Lets see the answer choices

(A) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and sell - Correct

(B) but also to steal valuable information that includes residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling - Incorrect
Thieves are able and selling is not parallel

(C) but also stealing valuable information including residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and selling - Incorrect
Incorrect idiomatic structure, usage of verb-ing 'stealing' is incorrect

(D) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, to sell - Incorrect

This choice corrects the idiom - Not only but also error. But 'to sell the information to dubious criminals' that comes after comma is a dependent clause, the usage of comma before a dependent clause is incorrect.

(E) but also stealing valuable information such as resident addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling - Incorrect
Incorrect idiom structure 'but also stealing' and also usage of 'selling' is incorrect

Ans: A

Official Explanation

As illegal activity becomes more and more common in suburban communities, thieves are able not only to divert used car parts from various vehicles, but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and sell the information to dubious criminals.

(A) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and sell
(B) but also to steal valuable information that includes residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling
(C) but also stealing valuable information including residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and selling
(D) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, to sell
(E) but also stealing valuable information such as resident addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling

This sentence deals with parallelism and idiom usage. However, if you first read the sentences with parallelism in mind, then you may be able to eliminate incorrect answers easily.

Here we are looking for “divert,” “steal,” and “sell” to have the same verb form to be parallel. Differences are highlighted in the text.

(A) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and sell
This is CORRECT. This is the only parallel option provided. “Divert, steal, and sell,” all use the same verb forms.

(B) but also to steal valuable information that includes residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling
This sentence is INCORRECT. “Steal” and “selling” are not the same verb form, making it not parallel.

(C) but also stealing valuable information including residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle and selling
This sentence is INCORRECT. Although “stealing” and “selling” are the same verb form, they do not match verb forms with “divert” earlier in the sentence. This is also incorrect usage of the “not only, but also” idiom.

(D) but also to steal valuable information such as residential addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, to sell
This sentence is INCORRECT. While the verb forms are parallel, the sentence is missing a conjunction. The sentence is meant to provide us with two additional things thieves do beyond diverting car parts. The thieves “steal valuable information” and “sell the information.” Without the “and” between these clauses (before “sell”) then we have an incomplete series and a sentence that is unclear.

(E) but also stealing valuable information such as resident addresses, vehicle registration, and documents left in the vehicle, and selling
This sentence is INCORRECT. Although “stealing” and “selling” are the same verb form, they do not match verb forms with “divert” earlier in the sentence.

There you go - option A was the correct choice all along!

The issue with option D is last part "to sell" which does not match the flow of the whole statement.
