If as you described you expect avg performance on the GMAT unless the rest of your profile is off the charts then you will have to be modest about your targets if you are seeking scholarships. Remember this is largely a function of how much more impressive your profile is than the other applicants so make sure to review the avg class profile for context

Hi,

I need some guidance from you.

1.
I got 500 (Q28, V31) on my 1st GMATPrep CAT, and just starting the actual prep. Intending a 6 month study as I can only spare 2-3 hrs/day. What year class should I be looking to aim at? Fall 2018, Spring 2019?

2.
I need to look for a full scholarship (regardless of university rank). Is it doable? How can I go about it?

I'd be grateful for your time. Thank you.

It is certainly doable to get full scholarships if we can raise your GMAT score. I would love to talk to you about how Personal MBA Coach can help you with private tutoring. We would want to create a strategy that includes some self studying as well to make it efficient for you since you have a ways to go. Perhaps focusing on learning the fundamentals is a first step and then we can lay out a plan.

Reach out and send your resume.

Hi omegan3,

There are multiple aspects to your question - to a large extent it is not possible to give specific answers to your questions unless you give more details about yourself.

1) For starters, we don't know if you are a good student, or if you need significant resources to study. I've known people who've crossed 750 after about 6 weeks of study. I've also known people who struggle to cross 600 after 6 months. To a large extent - your natural abilities determine how high you can go, and once a target score is set - this also determins how long you need to prepare for. So 6 months might be excessive for some, and not enough for others.

2) If, as per your judgment, you do need 6 months to reach your target score - whatever that may be - you might just be able to squeeze in applications to classes beginning in Fall 2018. But wait, I don't know much about how many years you've worked, etc. And this is also important to determine when you should put in your application. But in short - if you have 3+ years of work experience at this point, and have reached your target score by the end of October 2017, then you are all set to put in applications for Fall 2018.

3) Finally, you talk about scholarships - I've written a blog post about How to get an MBA scholarship here - which should answer your question.

All the best,
Karthik

Dear Karthik,

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. That's very kind of you, so thank you.

Follow up on your point 1):
I'm an average student, with average ability/intellect. I'm one of the laggards you can say :) I can usually get by or do okay if by luck there's someone to guide or advise me.

You mentioned work experience. I have about 8 years of work experience.
I read your blog and found it to be quite informative; thanks for writing it.

If you feel inclined, can you provide some guidance on how to go about it if my goal is a full scholarship (regardless of rank). Since I work full time, currently I'm just focusing on Quant of GMAT.

I'm looking for some experienced direction to set me on a path.

Thank you Karthik.
