Looking for admission to Booth’s 2 year program. Received 720 GMAT with 8 IR. I have a 3.7 GPA in engineering from a top engineering university in the US. I’m also an African American male if that matters.

Is my IR, GPA and major enough to show my ability to complete the rigorous coursework or should I retake for another 20 points to be above the average?

Thanks for the help.

Better if you share your work experience. Are you talking about MBA?

I have 2 and a half years of experience post undergrad working at a major oil and gas company. Think ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron. I work As a process design engineer and have worked as a lead designer on a $50 million project and won my departments highest award. I’m currently working on a $200 million dollar project on a team. I am the metrics lead for a safety program and also won the departments highest award for code that I wrote to automate the metrics reporting.

Extra Curriculars: I was the VP of professional development at the largest Nigerian non-profit in Houston. I organized round tables where young professionals could meet senior Nigerians. VP’s and Presidents in industry. I have stepped down recently but have stayed involved.

I was also a United Way lead organizing volunteering events at centers for the intellectually disabled.

Hi there - could you share your Q/V breakdown? While a 730+ would be ideal, if your 720 is well-balanced then I don't think it's critical to increase your GMAT score if you don't feel that there are more points on the table.

I guess It could be more balanced. I think my extra curriculars are good and that my essays will be good. But I dont want to be instantly tossed out because of my gmat score.

That is considered a well-balanced score. You certainly will not be tossed out with this score! While it's worth it to give a second shot if you think you can improve, you will be a viable contender even if you don't end up boosting the score.

Great. Thank you for the feedback. Final question. Does the 8 in IR mean anything? What if I retake and get 10 points higher but a 6 in IR?
