Hi all,
I recently took the official GMAT and scored a 550 (34V, 32Q). I signed up for a
Manhattan Prep class that was 9 weeks long, and took the official test exactly one week after finishing the course. During the course, I read all the materials and did all assigned problems. Towards the end of the course I started really reviewing each problem I did incorrectly. I asked myself what they were testing, whats the best approach, etc. I timed nearly every problem I did in the
OG 2016 book. I purchased the GMAT Prep Question Pack 1 around 3 weeks prior to taking my exam. With the question pack I practiced the same type of review for the questions I did from the
OG 2016. I studied around 2 hours on weekdays, and dedicated my entire weekends to studying.
Throughout the course of my studying, I took around 3 CAT exams. The first CAT I took one week into my studying and got a 580. The next CAT I took I got around a 570. Both of these were Manhattan CATS. The last CAT I took on GMAT prep, I scored a 550 (this was around a month before the test) I was overall pretty unsatisfied with the course (my professor was a huge jerk, and made several sexist remarks towards me, and overall lacked enthusiasm). I found it extremely discouraging that CAT after CAT I made absolutely no improvement throughout the course of my class. One thing I forgot to mention was timing, I maybe fell a minute behind on verbal and quant on the official CAT, so my timing was not a huge issue. Given my pacing not being bad, I figured it had to be me not being comfortable/knowledgable with the content. I recall asking my professor a few weeks prior to my class ending if a better method of review is to examine my CAT's more closely and see what subjects are my weak points, to which his response was "No, it's too late to do that at this stage."
Long story short, I am aiming for a 700+ and to retake the exam in around a month. I also am planning on applying Round 2 for all schools. At this stage I feel my studying and class was for nothing, and that the complete lack of improvement has left be discouraged, but not yet defeated. I would really appreciate any of you GMAT wizards out there giving me some advice on how to improve!! Thanks
