The passage is essentially about the views of 3 groups regarding the current academic curriculum.
Traditional Multiculturalists (TM): current curriculum emphasize the achievement of white Europeans, making only scant reference to other groups.
Anti-multiculturalists (AM): curriculum in its current form is fine. TM's view threatens national unity.
Conservative Multiculturalists (CM): agree with AM, although with some qualifications. CM also spawn from TM as the reactive opposition.
So from a liberal left to a conservative right in the political spectrum: TM > CM > AM.

Q1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

My answer is E).

A) determining the accuracy of one group's criticisms of another
The passage presents the opinions of 3 groups on 1 issue, but does not determine the accuracy of their opinions.
B) refuting a commonly held misconception
No commonly held misconceptions are mentioned in the passage.
C) suggesting lines of inquiry that those currently embroiled in a dispute might productively pursue
"Might productively pursue" is wrong. The 3 groups have already presented their opinions on the issue.
D) explaining why one group only recently joined an old debate
There is no indication from the passage that this debate is "old". Although CM did recently join the debate, the primary goal is still to present the 3 opinions along the political spectrum.
E) summarizing several prevalent views on a subject
Yes. This statement reflects our passage summary above.

Q2. The passage answers which of the following questions?

My answer is C).

A) In what ways have current traditional multiculturalists modified the goals and methods of their antecedents’?
We know the current TM's opinion on the matter at hand. We do not know anything about their antecedents.
B) How successful have multiculturalists been so far in their efforts to alter the scholastic canon?
This is not discussed at all in the passage.
C) On what grounds do traditional multiculturalists object to current curricula?
Yes, we do know about this. The TM object to current curricula on the grounds of objectivity. This is discussed thoroughly in paragraph 1.
D) Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?
We know that the author clearly thinks it is impossible for TM and CM to reconcile their positions. We do not know whether CM believes so as well.
E) In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?
We only know that TM believe that appropriate curricula "would emphasize the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data." But we do not have enough details beyond this to answer this question.

Q3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

My answer is D). Recall from the start that TM is the most liberal to the left on the spectrum that we created above.

A) a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10)
The ability to understand more than one interpretation of data is essentially what TM are proposing, so definitely not a rebellion against that.
B) an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36)
This statement is the author's view on CMs near the end of the passage, so not a view on TM.
C) placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14)
The author is fairly neutral in his/her description of the opinions, with maybe a negative tone towards CM, so "overemphasis" does not reflect the neutrality conveyed.
D) arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 445)
Yes, this is the view expressed by TM at the beginning of the passage.
E) intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)
This is the criticism from CM directed towards TM, so definitely not the author's view.

Q4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

My answer is B). The author stated in the last sentence of the passage: "because conservative multiculturalism arose and persists primarily in opposition to traditional multiculturalism, in other words, it lacks the coherent ideology necessary for it to offer the hope of further clarification to the debate."

A) traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience
This does not match the meaning of the last sentence.
B) in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy
Yes, coherent ideology is paraphrased to consistent philosophy here and matches the last sentence.
C) traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race
TM's skepticism over the self-recrimination view of CM is never stated in the passage.
D) the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged
This is never stated in the passage.
E) traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not
Also not stated in the passage.

Q5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is

My answer is B).

A) whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum
TM's view is to "to understand more than one interpretation of data", and this certainly does not mean to remove all references to white European achievements.
B) the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity
Yes, this is stated at the beginning: "Traditional multiculturalists rebel against the prevalent notion that the scholastic canon represents an objective assessment of academic subjects."
C) whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought
This is not discussed in the passage.
D) the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals
This is not a point of contention between TM and AM, but between CM and TM.
E) the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon
We only know that TM and AM disagree on whether to include a more diverse set of views into the current curricula. We do not know about what they actually think about other groups' contributions to the scholastic canon.

Q6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

My answer is D).

A) worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans
This is certainly not the view of TM, but of CM and AM.
B) agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal
This is potentially a point of contention between TM and CM, not a common ground between CM and TM.
C) have never altered their goals or their methods
We do not have any info from the passage to agree with or refute this point.
D) disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon
TM clearly disagrees with the status quo (opinion held by AM), but even CM agree with AM with some qualifications, so arguably disagree to some extent.
E) believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives
This is not the view from CM.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

A. determining the accuracy of one group's criticisms of another
The author says that the conservative multiculturalists lack a coherent philosophy, but does not make a judgement on whether the specific criticisms are accurate or inaccurate.

B. refuting a commonly held misconception
CORRECT : In paragraph 3, the author refutes the misconception that synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism is
imminent. Commonly held could mean that the position is widely held , or it could mean that the position is common among many people. Since no other option fits, B is correct.

C. suggesting lines of inquiry that those currently embroiled in a dispute might productively pursue
Author provides no such line of inquiry in the passage. The author comments on the likelihood of synthesis but does not suggest any productive line of inquiry as an alternative.

D. explaining why one group only recently joined an old debate
Author mentions that the conservative multiculturalists only recently joined the debate but does not offer any reasons. Since no additional information is provided in this regard we can cross out this option.

E. summarizing several prevalent views on a subject
This is true of the first two paragraphs, but author provides a personal opinion in paragraph 3. This changes the primary purpose from being only a summary of different viewpoints.

2. The passage answers which of the following questions?

A. In what ways have current traditional multiculturalists modified the goals and methods of their antecedents’?
Traditional multiculturalists are said to oppose the notion that the current curriculum is objective. Passage does not give specific details about their goals or objectives, let alone how the goals and objectives were modified. Hence this option is incorrect.

B. How successful have multiculturalists been so far in their efforts to alter the scholastic canon?
Passage makes no mention about how effective any of the groups have been. Author only details the beliefs of the three groups and offers his opinion on the synthesis theory.

C. On what grounds do traditional multiculturalists object to current curricula?
CORRECT : Author answers this question in paragraph 1.
"Traditional multiculturalists rebel against the prevalent notion that the scholastic canon represents an objective assessment of
academic subjects"

Traditional multiculturalists oppose the current curricula because they believe it is not objective.

D. Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?
Passage mentions that some observers believe in a compromise. The opinion of conservative multiculturalists on the compromise is not stated.

E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?
Traditional multiculturalists are stated to oppose the notion that the current curriculum is not objective, but no mention is made of which alternate points of view they would like to add. It can be argued that the alternate points of views are different in that they are from a non white lens but this is far too general.

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

A. a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10)
This option seems to suggest that traditional multiculturalists are opposed to the “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" . On the contrary, traditional multiculturalists argue in favor of multiple interpretations of the data.

B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36)
This is the author's view on conservative multiculturalism, not traditional multiculturalism

C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14)
This is the argument made by anti-multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists, NOT the opinion of the AUTHOR

D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 445)
CORRECT : This is explicitly stated by the author in paragraph 1
"They argue that the current
(5) curriculum bears the image of its creators; that is, it emphasizes the achievements of white Europeans, making only scant reference to
other groups.
"

E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)
This is the accusation made by anti-multiculturalists towards traditional multiculturalists. It is not the viewpoint of the author.

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

A. traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience
This may or may not be true but the author never makes such an argument. The question prompt is asking us for the author's argument.

B. in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy
CORRECT : This is exactly what the author argues in paragraph 3
"This seems unlikely, however, because conservative multiculturalism arose and persists primarily in opposition to traditional multiculturalism, in other words, it lacks the coherent ideology necessary for it to offer the hope of further clarification to the debate."
The conservative multiculturalist philosophy lacks a coherent ideology. In other words, it is not philosophically consistent and hence cannot synthesize with the traditionalist philosophy.

C. traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race
Author never mentions that conservatives accept the traditionalists views regarding race. We could even infer that they disagree on this topic.

D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged
Author does not make this argument. The first two paragraphs are descriptions of three schools of thought from a neutral perspective. Author only provides his opinion in the third paragraph. Since this argument does not appear we can cross it out.

E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not
Author does not say that conservatives are opposed to objectivity. Both groups disagree as to whether the curriculum is objective, not as to whether objectivity itself is desired.

5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is

A. whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum
Traditional multiculturalists argue that the current curriculum is too biased in favor of white Europeans, but it would be stretch to say they demand the removal of ALL references to white European achievement.

B. the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity
CORRECT :
Traditional multiculturalist viewpoint : "rebel against the prevalent notion that the scholastic canon represents an objective assessment of academic subjects"
Anti-multiculturalists viewpoint : "claim that the traditional canon does represent objective scholastic truth."
Clearly this is a point of contention as traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists hold opposing viewpoints.

C. whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought
Difficulty of the curriculum was never a point of contention. This is not mentioned in the passage.

D. the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals
This option introduces the third group (conservative multiculturalists), which is not at all relevant to the point of contention between the two groups in question (Traditional multiculturalist vs Anti-multiculturalist)

E. the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon
We are not looking for contribution to the scholastic canon. The point of contention is the representation of other groups in the scholastic canon.

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

A. worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans
This is a worry of the conservative multiculturalists but not of the traditional multiculturalists.
Traditional multiculturalists advocate for greater emphasis on diversity

B. agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal
This seems antithetical to the beliefs of conservative multiculturalists. Only the traditional multiculturalists would agree with this statement.
(Expiation means atonement for some mistake)

C. have never altered their goals or their methods
No mention is made of whether the groups have or have not altered their goals. Author only states the goals/beliefs of each group, not the history of the goals. Hence we can cross this option out.

D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon
CORRECT : It is quite clear from paragraph 1 that the traditional multiculturalists disagree with the status quo on the grounds that it is not objective, but what about the conservative multiculturalists? From paragraph 2,
" It asserts that .. and that the traditional canon is essentially solid."
Conservative multiculturalists believe the traditional canon is essentially solid. This would imply that though they agree with the traditional canon in essence, they are not in perfect agreement with it.
Hence we can say that both groups disagree to some extent about those who want to maintain the status quo. Who are these people( defenders of the status quo)? They are the ani-multiculturalists, as evidenced by this line from paragraph 2
"Anti-multiculturalists claim that the traditional canon does represent objective scholastic truth."

E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives
This is a belief of the traditional multiculturalists only, not the conservative multiculturalists.

Understanding the passage:

Paragraph 1:
The first para states the stand of a particular school of thought(Traditional multiculturalism) and goes on to explain their reasoning behind that stand.

Paragraph 2:
The second para states the stand of another group(Anti-Multiculturalists) and implies that it is right opposite to the opinion of the Traditional Multiculturalists(in first 2 lines). Then it goes on to explain the Anti-Multiculturalists' reasoning behind their take. Finally, it introduces a third group(Conservatives), states that their stand aligns with Anti Multicuturalists(for most part), and goes on to explain their line of reasoning.

Paragraph 3:
This is the conclusion para. It firsts states a prevailing expectation based on the schools of thought explained so far and refutes such an outcome. Then the author provides an explanation as to why such an expected outcome will not pan out.

Question 2: Answer - C

2. The passage answers which of the following questions?

A. In what ways have current traditional multiculturalists modified the goals and methods of their antecedents’?
The passage merely explains the current goal of traditional multiculturalists but nowhere in the para is a "modification" of antecedents' goals/methods talked about.

B. How successful have multiculturalists been so far in their efforts to alter the scholastic canon?
Again, success/failure of multiculturalists' efforts is not talked about in this passage. Mere mention of ideology and explanation.

C. On what grounds do traditional multiculturalists object to current curricula?
Correct. the grounds of objection are clearly stated in lines 4 - 10

D. Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?
The idea of synthesis/compromise is mentioned only in para 3 wherein only what Author believes and what "Some observers"(line 27) believe are mentioned. But what any of the three parties involved believe is stated nowhere.

E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?
Since we have no idea about the actual point of view expressed in the scholastic canon(one that's presented in line 5 is what traditionalists argue as the point of view of scholastic canon but we don't know if their argument is valid.), it's impossible to compare.

Question 3: Answer - D

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

Please note that what we're looking for, here, is what author states about traditional multiculturalism, not what other groups think/accuse traditional multiculturalism is.

A. a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10)
Simply untrue. Traditional multiculturalism is actually a supporter of more than one interpretation of data, not a rebel.

B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36)
The author refers Conservative Multiculturalism as the one that lacks coherent ideology(line 34), not traditional multiculturalism

C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14)
An "overemphasis" is nowhere mentioned as author's opinion. The "Overemphasis" stated in line 13 is in the opinion of anti-multiculturalists.

D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 4-5)
Lines 4-5(They argue that the current curriculum bears the image of its creators) clearly state this. Correct.

E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)
Again, this isn't the author's opinion. "It asserts that" in line 21 refers to conservative multiculturalism. So it's the opinion of conservatives rather than the author.

Question 4: Answer - B

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

A. traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience
It can be inferred that traditionalists will agree(line 7-8) to include more references to minority experience. Incorrect.

B. in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy
Correct. The author says “seems unlikely" (line 31) because one of the two schools(conservative multiculturalism) lacks the coherent ideology(consistent philosophy) necessary to synthesize.

C. traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race
Self-recrimination is not the ideology of conservatives, but of traditionalists - as conservatives say(line 21-25). Conservatives simply don't support(line 21-25) that idea. Nevertheless, the correct reason is stated in 3rd para.

D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged
No information is presented on the agreement/disagreement between the 2 groups on the "white European achievement"

E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not
It's nowhere stated that conservatives are not primarily interested in objectivity. Nevertheless, "primary interest" is never talked about in this passage.

Question 6: Answer - D

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

A. worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans
This is the worry of only the conservatives(line 21-25) but not the traditionalists.

B. agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal
Even if we assume that traditionalists won't dispute the usage of the phrase "expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation", conservatives don't think it's a sound goal. In fact, conservatives certainly oppose this goal(per lines 21-26)

C. have never altered their goals or their methods
We don't know whether any party has "altered" their goals/methods. Never mentioned in the passage.

D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon
We need to be sure that both (per question) traditionalists and conservatives disagree(at least to some extent) to maintaining status quo. We know that the traditionalists completely disagree with anyone who wants to maintain this status quo. Conservatives don't disagree completely but we can infer, from very subtle cues, that they might disagree to some extent. Even though the conservatives say, the scholastic canon is solid(in line 26), such a statement comes as a response out of their assumption that traditionalists "intend to remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum". But traditionalists never argued for "removal" of western thought but for the addition of reference to other minority groups(lines 4-10). Given this, and also based on "although with some qualifications" in line 19, we may subtly conclude that conservationists may agree to some extent.

E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives
Traditionalists may agree to radically alter the curriculum but it's doubtful that conservatives would back a "radical" alteration. Radical may be construed as "removal Western thought and achievement from the curriculum, in entirety", which conservatives clearly oppose(line 20-25).

Quick notes -

Author is citing a debate, which is happening in between the traditional and Anti-multiculturalists on the present academic curriculum, and this debate is further joined by the conservative multiculturalists.

1. Traditional multiculturalists - Against the curriculum because of the objective assessment of academic subjects.
2. Anti multiculturalists - In favor of the curriculum and without directly crossing the Traditional multiculturalists they debate that the objective assessment is necessary without highlighting the diversity, which breaks the unity.
3. Conservative multiculturalists - Agree on few points with Anti - multiculturalists. They are against the removal of western thought and achievements.
4. Some Observers - New school of thought will arise from Traditional and Conservative multiculturalists.
5. Author - Opposes the observers by saying that there is no common ground on the thought process of the two groups.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

A. determining the accuracy of one group's criticisms of another
[Not questioning on the accuracy]
B. refuting a commonly held misconception
[It's a debate. There are point of views of each party]
C. suggesting lines of inquiry that those currently embroiled in a dispute might productively pursue
[Not suggesting any inquiry for further discussion. In fact at last the author gives his point of view]
D. explaining why one group only recently joined an old debate
[Author is definitely not concerned with this thought]
E. summarizing several prevalent views on a subject
[Through out the passage the author discusses on the point of views of the various parties and then finally conclude with his Pov.]

IMO - E

E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?
[to be frank the POV of scholastic canon is not given, but the POV of various parties is mentioned in the passage.]

IMO - C

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

A. a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10) [Wrong interpretation]
B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36) [Not addressed to the traditional multiculturalism]
C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14) [Not really the author's POV]
D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 445)
Straight from the passage - They argue that the current curriculum bears the image of its creators;
E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)
[Not author's POV, but conservative PoV for the traditional multiculturalists]

IMO - D

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

A. traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience
[Too narrow and not mentioned in the passage]
B. in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy
[There should be a common ground to produce a new school of thought] [Correct]
C. traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race [Different PoV not given in the passage]
D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged [It might not only because of the white Europeans that the conservatives went against the traditionalists]
E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not
[Both want to talk about the objectivity but with a different objectives]

IMO- B

5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is

A. whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum [Too narrow]
B. the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity [Yeah]
C. whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought [Not given]
D. the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals [Goals are not mentioned]
E. the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon [Not really concerned about the contribution by other groups] [Irrelevant]

IMO - B

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

A. worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans [Eliminate]
B. agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal
Both of them talk about the objective assessment of the subjects
C. have never altered their goals or their methods [Eliminate]
D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon [Eliminate]
E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives [Eliminate]

IMO - B

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

A. determining the accuracy of one group's criticisms of another => the passage does not evaluate. INCORRECT
B. refuting a commonly held misconception => there are multiple views in the passage not 'a common' view. INCORRECT
C. suggesting lines of inquiry that those currently embroiled in a dispute might productively pursue => In the last line author clearly says none will purse coherent ideology. INCORRECT
D. explaining why one group only recently joined an old debate => Author mentions the reason why Conservative multiculturalists have recently joined the debate but that is not the primary concern. INCORRECT
E. summarizing several prevalent views on a subject => As passage progresses multiple view points are presented and at the author author summarizes by giving his or her own point of view. CORRECT

2. The passage answers which of the following questions?

A. In what ways have current traditional multiculturalists modified the goals and methods of their antecedents’?
B. How successful have multiculturalists been so far in their efforts to alter the scholastic canon?
C. On what grounds do traditional multiculturalists object to current curricula? => line 4-5 clearly answer this stating " They argue that the current curriculum bears the image of its creators". The passage does not answer any other question hence this is CORRECT.
D. Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?
E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

A. a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10) => they supported this argument and not against. INCORRECT
B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36) => Author talks about the coherent ideology in lines 34-36 but it is about both (traditional multiculturalism and conservative multiculturalism ), not just traditional multiculturalism. INCORRECT
C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14) => Anti-multiculturalists say this in line 11-16 not traditional multiculturalists. INCORRECT
D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 4-5) => Perfect. Author says this about traditional multiculturalism in line 4-5 CORRECT
E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23) => This argument is by conservative multiculturalism not traditional multiculturalism. INCORRECT

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

EXPLANATION: Line 31 says "This seems unlikely, however, because conservative multiculturalism arose and persists primarily in opposition to traditional multiculturalism, in other words, it lacks the coherent ideology necessary for it to offer the hope of further clarification to the debate."
A. traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience
B. in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy => Perfect, in line with the explanation. CORRECT
C. traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race
D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged
E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not

5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is

A. whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum => There is a dislike hinted in the passage but we can 'remove all references to white'. INCORRECT
B. the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity => This is not explicitly mentioned in the passage. INCORRECT
C. whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought => Anything about 'school-age children' is nt mentioned in the passage. INCORRECT
D. the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals => This is a trap. It is sort of infer-able from the last line of passage (author's view). Question is not asking about author's point of view. Hence I will stick to A. INCORRECT
E. the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon => The passage talks about many different groups and their opinions. Also, 'other groups' are mentioned in this referance. CORRECT

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

A. worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans => they support adversity contrary to white Europeans. INCORRECT
B. agree that the exploitation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal => conservative multiculturalists are not happy about 'white self-recrimination' (line 25) so both can not agree on this. INCORRECT
C. have never altered their goals or their methods => We do not even know about their methods. INCORRECT
D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon => Passage has mentioned dis-agreements with belief - maintain the status. CORRECT
E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives => The passage does not suggest this and 'must' is too strong to be suggested by the passage. INCORRECT

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

This one felt hard and I could arrive at answer only be POE, so lets look at the options

A. determining the accuracy of one group's criticisms of another
The author was neutral throughout the passage, so this cant be the answer

B. refuting a commonly held misconception
The author did mention that "some observers suggest that both views can lead to a new school" but then the author refutes it and moreover, the passage only says "some" , so this is out

C. suggesting lines of inquiry that those currently embroiled in a dispute might productively pursue
I was divided between, C and E, but eliminate this because the author did not give/provided any recommendations in the passage, the author does mention towards the end on why a third school of thought might not come into existence, but nowhere he suggested anything that can be pursued, hence eliminate this

D. explaining why one group only recently joined an old debate
No, the author did not explain why one group i.e. "conservative multiculturalist" joined the debate recently

E. summarizing several prevalent views on a subject
To be honest, this doe not seems perfect, but we are left with this. The author does summarise/explain both the views on the subject, so I selected this one. However, given at the end author also presented his view (this answer choice does not capture that)

2. The passage answers which of the following questions?
Given this is a specific question, let's look at each of the answer choices

A. In what ways have current traditional multiculturalists modified the goals and methods of their antecedents’?
Nowhere in the passage, this is discussed, so eliminate this

B. How successful have multiculturalists been so far in their efforts to alter the scholastic canon?
Nowhere in the passage the success factor of multiculturalism has been discussed, hence eliminate this one

C. On what grounds do traditional multiculturalists object to current curricula?
This is clearly stated in the first paragraph "They argue that the current curriculum bears the image of its creators", hence this is the correct answer choice

D. Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?
We only have author views on the above question not of anyone else, so eliminate this

E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?
Nowhere this is discussed in passage, hence it cant be answered

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as
The author presented her view in the second paragraph "traditional multiculturalists intend to remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum", and looking at the options, Option E fits perfectly well, hence that is the answer

A. a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10)
B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36)
C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14)
D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 445)
E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

The author mentioned in the last paragraph "it lacks the coherent ideology necessary for it to offer the hope of further clarification to the debate". So option B exactly aligns with our pre-thinking, hence the answer

A. traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience
B. in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy
C. traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race
D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged
E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not

5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is
The second passage in the paragraph mentions that "Anti-multiculturalists claim that the traditional canon does represent objective scholastic truth" and then the passage also mentions that "Conservative multiculturalists, who have recently joined the debate, agree". So now lets look at the options

A. whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum
No traditional multiculturalists didn't mention that they want to remove all the references, instead they said they want to add more data points

B. the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity
Yes, this is the point of contention between the two groups as mentioned in the passage

C. whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought
Nowhere in the passage children or how they will handle complex thought is discussed

D. the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals
Nope, this is never discussed

E. the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon
No contribution of any group is discussed

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

A. worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans
This is not what both worry about, it's only conservative multiculturalists worry about this

B. agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal
No, they don't agree on this

C. have never altered their goals or their methods
No, the passage does not suggest this

D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon
Yes, both disagree on the status quo of the present curricula and the scholastic canon

E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives
Noone believes that it must be radically altered

D. Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?

E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?

E seems the only likely answer

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

A. a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10)

B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36)
[color=#00a651]C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14)[/color]
D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 445)
E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)

only C is the opinion of the author, other choices start with argument, arguing, intending

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

A. traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience

D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged
E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not

B is correct as conservative multicularilism does not have a consistent philosophy

5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is

A. whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum
B. the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity
C. whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought
D. the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals

E. the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon
only choice E seems appropriate, A,B are goals of traditional multiculturists , C,D are not mentioned

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

A. worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans
B. agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal
C. have never altered their goals or their methods
D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon
E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives

choice E is incorrect, A. is opinion of traditional multiculturists only, C. conservative multiculturists are reflective that implies they can change methods/goals only option B seems correct

ANSWERS —> 1. E 2. C 3. D 4. B 5. B 6. D

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

Primary Purpose Questions. The author is analytically exploring multiple perspectives on multiculturalism throughout the three paragraphs.

A.determining the accuracy of one group's criticisms of another

The author does explore one group’s criticisms of another but not the ACCURACY of said criticisms.

B. refuting a commonly held misconception

Any commonly held belief is mentioned paragraph 1 as “ a prevalent notion that current scholastic canon is objective” However the AUTHOR isn’t refuting it or taking any position.

C. suggesting lines of inquiry that those currently embroiled in a dispute might productively pursue

The author only states as an independent thought that the two groups (Traditional and Conservative) may never merge together as one due to their differences. The tone otherwise is perfectly analytical and not suggestive of any solutions or lines of inquiry.

D. explaining why one group only recently joined an old debate

Conservatives recently joining the debate is mentioned however it isn’t explored why they did not is it the main purpose of this passage.

E. summarizing several prevalent views on a subject CORRECT

The passage proceeds to present three different views on multiculturalism analytically. This is the primary purpose.

2. The passage answers which of the following questions?

Evidence questions are easier still to eliminate. The answer is always YES. The wrong answers are MAYBE and NO.

A.In what ways have current traditional multiculturalists modified the goals and methods of their antecedents’?

Who are these antecedents? Not only are these antecedents not mentioned, the goals and methods being modified with respect to them BY traditionalists is beyond the scope of the passage.

B. How successful have multiculturalists been so far in their efforts to alter the scholastic canon?

Their efforts are not mentioned in the passage at all.

C. On what grounds do traditional multiculturalists object to current curricula? CORRECT

We do know this as per paragraph 1. They believe it isn’t objective and represents too little of groups other than the creators.

D. Do conservative multiculturalists believe that compromise with traditional multiculturalists is possible?

We do not know. We only know the author’s viewpoint on this which is that it can’t be done, not the MULTICULTURALISTS’ viewpoint.

E. In what ways are the alternate points of view that traditional multiculturalists suggest adding to the curriculum different from the point of view expressed in the scholastic canon?

This is far too specific. We just know that traditionals disagree with current viewpoint, not in how many ways it is specifically different.

3. The author would be most likely to characterize traditional multiculturalism as

The answer would MOST LIKELY be true given that passage is true. The best out of the five choices would win.

A.a rebellion against “the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data" (lines 9-10)

The statement in the quotations IS what traditional multiculturalists believe, why would they rebel against that?

B. an argument lacking “the coherent ideology necessary...to offer anything to the debate" (lines 34-36)

The author states this about CONSERVATIVE multiculturalism.

C. placing "an overemphasis on diversity" (lines 13-14)

This is a viewpoint of TRADITIONALISTS BY ANTI MULTICULTURALISTS not the author. Remember that the author remains analytical in this respect

D. arguing that “the current curriculum bears the image of its creators" (lines 445) CORRECT

This is true. Traditional M.C’s do espouse this belief and think this makes scholastic canon NOT objective.

E. intending to "remove Western thought and achievement from the curriculum" (lines 22-23)

This is a viewpoint of Traditionals by Conservatives, not the author.

4. It can be inferred from the author's argument that a synthesis of traditional and conservative multiculturalism “seems unlikely" (line 31) because

Inference —> the correct choice MUST BE TRUE.

A.traditionalists will never accept the proposition that the curriculum be expanded to include more references to minority experience

This is quite opposite to what they actually do want which is more viewpoints of the minority groups and not just the creators (White Europeans)

B. in order for two schools of thought to synthesize into a third, each must first present a consistent philosophy CORRECT

The author states that Conservative Multiculturalism evolved in response to Traditional M.C and therefore doesn’t have a COHERENT idealogy (Consistent philosophy)

C. traditionalists voice skepticism over the self-recrimination of conservatives, even though conservatives accept traditionalists views regarding race

This is beyond the scope of the passage. Views on race isn’t discussed. Moreover self recrimination of conservatives isn’t what is mentioned in the passage. This is a classic rearrangement of superfluous words to make it quite tantalising (See what I did here?)

D. the two groups will never agree on the degree to which the achievements of white Europeans should be acknowledged

This is far too specific. We just know the two groups won’t agree as per the author’s viewpoint, not specifically about the acknowledgement of White Europeans.

E. traditional multiculturalists are interested primarily in objectivity, while conservatives are not

T.M.C’s are interested in objectivity ( However what they believe to objective is also explored in a relative fashion in the passage), But do we know for sure conservatives are not? No.

5. According to the passage, one point of contention between traditional multiculturalists and anti-multiculturalists is

We just need to find a point where Traditional and Anti M.C’s disagree. Evidence.

A.whether to remove all references to white European achievement from the curriculum

We do not know whether Traditionals want to remove all references to White europeans in the curriculum.

B. the degree to which the curriculum, as it stands, demonstrates objectivity CORRECT

They do not agree on this point at all. Traditionals say it isn’t objective whereas conservatives say it is.

C. whether school-age children can handle work that involves complex thought

This is easy to eliminate. School children being able to handle any work is not explored in this excerpt.

D. the question of how close conservative multicultural goals are to traditional multicultural goals

DO we know their specific perspectives on this? No evidence in the passage at all.

E. the extent and depth to which other groups have contributed to the scholastic canon

Neither group disagrees to depth of contribution, they only vehemently oppose each other on the stance of objectivity.

6. The passage suggests that both traditional multiculturalists and conservative multiculturalists

Suggests —> This is an inference question. The correct choice is MOST LIKELY TO BE TRUE OR MUST BE TRUE

A.worry that an over-emphasis on diversity might weaken individuals’ commitment to viewing themselves as Americans

This is only the view point of Traditionals, not Conservatives.

B. agree that the expiation of white guilt over minority exploitation, by means of a curricular study is a sound goal

No this is not something they both agree on as per the passage. Not enough evidence for this inference.

C. have never altered their goals or their methods

We know nothing of each groups goals or method. Only viewpoints.

D. disagree to some extent with the beliefs of those who want to maintain the status quo with regard to present curricula and the scholastic canon CORRECT

This was a little hard. We know that traditionals DO disagree with those who want to maintain the current curriculum. However in the statement “Conservative multiculturalists, who have recently
joined the debate, agree, although with some
(20) qualifications. “ SOME QUALIFICATIONS suggests that conservatives do not fully agree with the same thing.

E. believe that the curriculum must be radically altered to include more minority perspectives

Conservatives oppose this notion

800gal Once again excellent.

Below are the participants with tier 2 explanations

Gaudapada
ShellyB

sumitkrocks the purpose of the competition is to be helpful to others, you might need to put in more effort for writing the explanation. Everything else is good.

akash2703 RohitSaluja good work by both of you too.

For all those got more questions incorrect in addition to the question #3 and 5 might need to put in more efforts to get good percentile in RC.

Thank you

pls provide explanation for question 5

Posted from my mobile device

In this question, Answer options A, C, and D are straight away out of the way, the main problem is B vs E.

Too much emphasis on the words "objective assessment" wrongly leads to the answer option B. While the real problem lies in the root cause of the problem. Traditional multiculturalists (TM) argue that the current curriculum bears the image of its creators. The Traditional multiculturalists think that the white European are the creator of the current curriculum and that is why it only bear their image.

TM thinks that Appropriate curricula would emphasize the ability to understand more than one interpretation of data. According to TM, the curriculum would be appropriate when it wouldn't be biased (as they think it is biased because of its creators, the white Europeans). So conclusively they (TM) want other groups to contribute to the development of the curriculum. So E is the answer.

Traditional multiculturalists rebel against the
prevalent notion that the scholastic canon
represents an objective assessment of
academic subjects.
They argue that the current
(5) curriculum bears the image of its creators; that
is, it emphasizes the achievements of white
Europeans, making only scant reference to
other groups. Appropriate curricula, they argue,
would emphasize the ability to understand more
(10) than one interpretation of data.

Anti-multiculturalists claim that the traditional
canon does represent objective scholastic truth.

They voice concern that an overemphasis on
diversity in education will ultimately harm
(15) national unity, since it would encourage citizens
to view themselves as members of smaller
ethnic groups rather than as Americans.

[

For QUESTION 5- How does E represent a point of contention between TRADITIONAL MC and ANTI MC’s?

All we can understand in the passage is that TRADITIONAL MC’s believe that other groups haven’t been focussed on, not that ANTI MC’s disagree on the degree if which ither groups contributed. In fact ANTI MC’s main point is that focus on diversity would affect national unity and that the current curriculum is objective.

However the passage DOES state that one group says it is objective and other says it isn’t.

So doesn’t that logically point to B? Please review. Sajjad1994
