Most MBA programs want to see the actual transcript and will go off of the gpa from the transcript. So if your second degree has a gpa on it, they will go with that most likely and it sounds like that can work in your favor. Most MBA programs do not ask for students to calculate or convert to gpa- they just look directly at the transcript. Thank you for your response. If I can in fact use my second transcript, I think it would be very advantageous not only because it has a higher GPA but also because I majored in applied mathematics, which is more than likely seen as more difficult of a major than Economics - my first degree .

Hi Wofford09,

If you write your application skillfully, you should easily be able to get the admissions committee to focus almost exclusively on the second degree. So, there is reason to be optimistic!

Many candidates pursue a second degree as a way to render the first degree's GPA nearly meaningless for purposes of admission, and in most cases they can inspire a school to use the second degree's grades as the GPA upon which they make an admissions decision.

Good luck - and feel free to reach out to us if you need assistance in the MBA admissions process!

Generally you will have to submit both transcripts and the GPAs from each program which the schools will look at and evaluate. Also, many transcripts have ranking systems for students which should help you out if your GPA does not best reflect your placing amongst your classmates. An optional essay also can help here if you need further explanation. One thing I always recommend particularly if you have been on campus or built some rapport with admissions is to simply ask them how you should handle.

Hi Wofford09,

I would advise you to submit both transcripts separately, and the schools do the evaluation. Most business school would look at your higher GPA in the second school favorably - so you should be ok on that front.

But please do write an optional essay detailing the circumstances of your lower GPA at the first school (it could just be that it was not easy to score grades at your school).

Karthik

Hello,

I am applying to B-School this year and would like some clarification on how to correctly approach my situation. I have two bachelor degrees from two different university in the US (both 4 year accredited institutions). After graduating my first university, I worked for a startup that was acquired and as a result I cashed out my stock to reinvest in my future by going back to school for a degree in applied mathematics; however, my credits from my first degree transferred so I was only in school for 1.5 years for my second degree. Below are some question that I need clarification on:

1) My first university had A- (3.7 which ranged from 90 to 93) and B- (2.7 which ranged from 80 to 83). At this school, I graduated with just over a 2.9 GPA, which would be above an 83 and at most other schools would be a 3.0+ (still not stellar but better than having a 2 in front of the GPA). What is the best way to highlight this to the admissions council or will they see the transcript?

2) At my second university I had a 3.5 GPA. I assume I can't just submit this GPA as I used credits from my previous college to complete the 4 year requirement, correct? I would have to add up all my credits and submit combined GPA off of two different GPA scales?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JG

Thank you everyone for the responses as they have all been incredibly helpful. I will start drafting my optional essay and i will also be attending some admission events this next couple weeks with all but one of my target schools so hopefully I can build a good rapport as mentioned.

Thanks again!

Building off what was written above, definitely submit all of the transcripts and they will be evaluated. Don't worry about converting anything as the schools will judge it all as it is.

You unfortunately cannot just submit the second one.

Reach out with any other questions.

Best,
Scott
