plot 1, total 200 seeds, 57% germinated.
so no. of seeds that germinated is 57*2 = 114 ( if its 57 out of 100, its 57*2 out of 200)

plot 2, total seeds 300, 42% germinated.
so no. of seeds that germinated is 42*3 = 126

total germinations = 114+126 =240

240/5= 48.

In a horticultural experiment, 200 seeds were planted in plot I and 300 were planted in plot II. If 57 percent of the seeds in plot I germinated and 42 percent of the seeds in plot II germinated, what percent of the total number of planted seeds germinated?

(A) 45.5%
(B) 46.5%
(C) 48.0%
(D) 49.5%
(E) 51.0%

It is a weighted average question though we should use the formula in this form:

Cavg = (C1 * w1 + C2 * w2)/ (w1 + w2)

Cavg = (.57 * 200 + .42 * 300) / (200 + 300)

Cavg = (114 + 126)/500 = 240/500 = 48%

Answer (C)

Can there be some really short method to do this? Because i wouldn't want to spend much time on this kind of a question.

kushtayal Hey there!

Quote:

Let's do quick math. 200 seeds. 50%=100. 1%=2 so 7%=14. Total 114.

300 seeds. 40%=120. 1%=3 so 2%=6. Total 126.

Grand total = 240/500. 1%=5. 2%=10. You are 10 short of 50%, which is 250. Hence 48%.

Ideally you don't even need to take pen and paper to be able to solve it in less than 60 seconds. You should know how to deal with %s. It's kinda important.

Let's say you don't like this method. You can solve it in one single formula as done by Karishma madam above.

Let's say you don't know that formula. So deal with the units digit. We can see that grand total will end in 0. That tells me that it is a integer % and not fractional %. So that eliminates Option A, B and D. Between C and E, you won't take much time to realise that answer is less than 50%. So C.

Now, if this is not sufficient then I would say go back, get good with percentages and solve such questions. I mean this is as easy as GMAT can get. :)

(A) 45.5%
(B) 46.5%
(C) 48.0%
(D) 49.5%
(E) 51.0%
Solution:

The percentage of the planted seeds that germinated is:

(200 x 0.57 + 300 x 0.42 ) /(200 + 300) = (114 + 126) / (500) = 240/500 = 48/100 = 48%

Answer: C

Estimate value = 200*57% + 300*42%
Estimate value = 200*(60-3)% + 300*(40+2)% >> I always prefer to take multiple of 10 for estimation (200*60% can be estimated quickly compared to 200*57%)
Estimate value = 200*60% + 300*40% = 240

Estimate value = 200*60% - 200*3% + 300*40% + 300*2% (2nd and 4th term will cancel out)

Answer will C or D
Now 240/5 = 48%

To find the percentage of the total number of planted seeds that germinated, we need to calculate the total number of germinated seeds and then express it as a percentage of the total number of planted seeds.

In plot I, 57 percent of 200 seeds germinated:
Number of germinated seeds in plot I = 0.57 * 200 = 114

In plot II, 42 percent of 300 seeds germinated:
Number of germinated seeds in plot II = 0.42 * 300 = 126

Total number of germinated seeds = Number of germinated seeds in plot I + Number of germinated seeds in plot II = 114 + 126 = 240

Total number of planted seeds = Number of seeds in plot I + Number of seeds in plot II = 200 + 300 = 500

Now, let's calculate the percentage of germinated seeds:
Percentage of germinated seeds = (Total number of germinated seeds / Total number of planted seeds) * 100 = (240 / 500) * 100 = 48%

Therefore, 48% of the total number of planted seeds germinated, which corresponds to option (C) in the given choices.
