Need help with RC.

Hi, Can you provide some tips to improve RC? Everyday I practice medium and hard questions from OG-19. But, I could only get 2-3 right answers out of 15 questions(which is 3-4 passages). I think my problem is in comprehension and also understanding of the questions. I am writing my GMAT in 2 months. Would it be enough to improve on above areas and still able to ace RC passage. I am willing to put more time as I am not working at the moment. But I am not sure what strategy to follow that could help me in the right direction. Please advise.

At first try to accustomed with what types of question is asked in gmat RC. Then try to understand how these question types are answered. Try to understand what the short passage intend to test and what the long passage does. Try to understand what's the tone of author (remember: tone of author is not asked in gmat RC). Try to understand the main point and primary purpose (both are not the same thing!) of the passage. Both questions are asked in gmat! So, be serious of these two types questions. And try two understand how to attack the RC inference and CR inference question. Remember: these two things are NOT the same thing(specially in attacking mode). Then try to understand how a RC passage is going to difficulty level. Also try to have a feelings on the structure of the passage. It is also important to understand the argument of the passage.

Check videos of RC with Ron ( you can find them in YouTube ), these are pretty good for a beginner and gives idea how to attack RC questions and its types.

IMO, RC99and Veritas RC are best material for preparing

If you try for details question, then RC99 might be helpful for you. But, for Main idea or big picture questions, don't try from RC 99 passage. At least 34 passage of rc99 is excerpted from mcat of kaplan. kaplan's mcat passage is just combination of some facts.
In short, rc 99 will not worth your money, time and efforts.

Hi Kriti16,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help.

To improve in Reading Comprehension, you need to focus on understanding what you are reading. When you incorrectly answer Reading Comprehension questions, it’s partly because you didn’t truly understand what you read, right? Thus, you likely have to slow down in order to (eventually) speed up. At this point, your best bet is to focus on getting the correct answers to questions, taking as much time as you need to see key details and understand the logic of what you are reading. You have to learn to comprehend what you read, keep it all straight, and use what you are reading to arrive at correct answers. If you don't understand something, go back and read it one sentence at a time, even one word at a time, not moving on until you understand what you have just read. There is no way around this work. Your goal should be to take all the time you need to understand exactly what is being said and arrive at the correct answer. If you can learn to get answers taking your time, you can learn to speed up. Answering questions is like any task: The more times you do it carefully and successfully, the faster you become at doing it carefully and successfully.

Another component of understanding what you are reading is being “present” when reading. Don’t worry about how things are going at work, or what you will eat for dinner, or even how long you are taking to read through the passage. Just focus on what is in front of you, word by word, line by line. Furthermore, try to make reading fun. For example, even if you are reading about a topic that bores you, pretend that you are the person making the argument. By doing so, you will make the passage more relatable to YOU, and ultimately you should be able to read with greater focus.

One final component of Reading Comprehension that may be tripping you up is that RC questions contain one or more trap answers that seem to answer the question but don't really. So, a key part of training to correctly answer RC questions is learning to notice the differences between trap answers and correct answers. You have to learn to see how trap answers seem to follow from what the passages say, but don't really, while correct answers fit what the passages say exactly.

RC detail question Vs CR "Draw the conclusion":
What they've in COMMON:
Correct answer:
--> MUST BE TRUE
--> Can be PROVED from the text
--> Just "recycle" GIVEN INFORMATION
What's different?
RC detail question:
--> The answer will be based on SINGLE STATEMENTS from the text (... you DON'T have to COMBINE statements!)
--> Main challenge: define a search and find relevant information (FINDING STUFF)
CR "Draw the conclusion":
--> You will ALWAYS have to COMBINE AT LEAST TWO STATEMENTS from the passage to prove your conclusion!
-->"FINDING STUFF" is a non-issue
