I had a 730 from my first attempt (Q49, v40)
I thought I could improve (especially in quant) as I had barely studied the first time around.

Given my background (Male Indian Engineer in Tech), I thought a 730 would not suffice.

So I registered again, and studied properly this time around.
My last two GMAT Prep mocks were 730 (Q50 and V38) and 740 (Q50 and V40)

I only managed a 690 (Q47 V38)
I immediately cancelled the score.

I can understand the V38, but Q47 just beats me.
Does it make sense for me to take the GMAT again?
You must take your GMAT again, because there is a chance to increase your score. Your verbal and quant score is stable (not fluctuate too much) in your first real exam and last 2 gmatprep mocks. So, as an engineering background, you can easily increase your quant score (at least 48, i guess). I think, you exam hall is not favor to you on the exam day (i am actually talking about for bad quant score!)
All the best for your exam.

I would say 730 is a good score and if you want to increase it further u can probably get a Enhanced score report to get a personal insight into what went wrong. If you feel if those areas can be improved, then go for another attempt.

Having said that, can you elaborate more on what schools you are aiming for to help you better?.
If your score falls above avg score, you can probably concentrate more on preparing strong essays and resumes. Also, keep in mind few schools consider the number of attempts as well

I'm looking at schools like ISB and NUS in Asia, and Fuqua, Ross and Darden in the US.
730 is above the average score for all of these schools but the Indian IT Male factor is playing in my mind, even though I'm not a developer any more (moved into a PM role within a tech consulting startup almost a year back).

Hi panda_power,

First off, since you are asking an admissions-based question, you should reach out to one of the many admissions consultants here on GMAT Club to get a better idea of whether you need to retake the GMAT.

If you determine that you do need to retake, since you scored 730 with very little prep, with the right study plan, I do believe that you can improve your GMAT score.

With all that said, if you decide to retake the GMAT, feel free to reach back out, and I’d be happy to help. Good luck!
