Hi. There's something that's been been really bothering me for a while and I would be appreciate if there is something who can clear my mind on this.
Here's some background. I am 27 and have about 3-4 years of working experience. There were some issues after graduation that delayed me getting the work experience I wanted.
I am still the in the process of finishing my professional exams, getting sufficient experience etc. I predict it will take me until I am 29 or even older before, I will have accomplished what I need to have a good profile.
Lately I noticed a lot of people similar age are joining MBA programs and I'm getting frustrated with how long its taking me to build my profile right.
I'm wondering, should I just drop it all and focus on the gmat so I can apply next year? Or should I be patient and ensure I am ready before I apply? The average age thing keeps bothering me, since I'm worried I would be 30 by the time I am ready. Wouldn't that be too old and put me at a disadvantage in my mba application?
Appreciate any comments to help me clear my mind. Seems I can't focus on anything while these thoughts continue to disturb me.
Be ready before you apply. The difference between 27 and 29 or 30 is not that large. The difference between a good profile and a weak one is colossal.
Also, it shouldn't take you three whole years to prepare. IF you are already 27 1-2 years of prep should suffice.
Other than getting amazing test scores...I think at this point, the question is: What can you do to improve your profile over the next years???
I would like to present you with a list of ideas, which should help you:
- Definitely do at least one if not real real volunteer works while you are working. the BEST possible volunteer work is anything that has to do with leadership or fundraising, so if you see those opportunities, jump on them!
- Make sure you do the best possible at work, taking any opportunities to lead, to get involved in social events, to advance.
- Likewise try and keep up your life! What I mean is that schools LOVE candidates who have a broad range of activities and interests.
- If you have any interest in entrepreneurship as a side project, it can be good to have that in your profile.
- If you have any interest in politics as a side project, it can be good to have that in your profile.
There are probably more things that I am not yet thinking about, but this is a very good place to start!
I hope this helps,
Best,
JF
