A boat covers a distance of 16 km in 2 hours when rowing downstream and in 4 hours if rowing upstream. What is the speed of the boat in still water?

A. 2 km/hr
B. 4 km/hr
C. 6 km/hr
D. 8 km/hr
E. 10 km/hr

Given: A boat covers a distance of 16 km in 2 hours when rowing downstream and in 4 hours if rowing upstream.
Asked: What is the speed of the boat in still water?

Let the speed of the boat in still water be b kmh and speed of the stream of s kmh

\(\frac{16}{(b+s)} = 2 \)
b+s = 8 kmh (1)

\(\frac{16}{(b-s)} = 4\)
b-s = 4 kmh (2)

b = 6 kmh

W= effect of current on speed

(R+w)* 2 hrs = 16km
(R-w)*4 hrs = 16km
2R+2W = 16
4R +4W = 32
4R-4W = 16
8R = 48
R= 6
