The correct answer for a question on pronouns reads as follows-
"Mothers expect unconditional love from their children, and they are rarely disappointed."
I'm confused with the use of "they"-is it not ambiguous? It could refer to mothers or the children, and so should should we not repeat the word 'mothers' to make it clear?

This one is perfectly fine to me. Consider the following: Suppose, you're talking with your friend over the phone and they say:
''Take the pizza out of the box and put it........'' ----and then get cut off the phone. Your brain automatically associate 'it' with 'the pizza', even though it's technically ambiguous.
The complete sentence is something like....
''Take the pizza out of the box and put it........ ...... into the oven. The bold part makes it clear that 'pizza' is the intended referent, and that 'box' is not.

The same happens in your example.

Verbal 2nd edition--> 68; 21
Hope it helps...
