nugarp,
Yes, the human reader should overlook the outline. Don't cancel the score. It's an excellent one. Your profile looks good but whether you are competitive at S/H/MIT will depend on the depth of your leadership and impact at work and outside it (your management experience at UMD helps but hopefully you'll have something current as well. Other factors will be your demographic (Indian male is not a diversity profile, of course) and whether you have an unusual or compelling personal story (e.g., family, adversity, hobbies etc.). I'd be glad to give you more specific feedback if you send me your resume: paulsbodine@gmail.com.

Hi guys, my target schools are Stanford/Harvard/MIT. I got a 720 on my gmat two months ago, and a 750 today (8 IR/50 Q/41 V), which is ok. But I was getting 780s on GMATPrep, and most importantly, I left my outline in as part of my AWA.

I finished my AWA at exactly 0:00 left and didn't have a chance to delete my outline. Obviously, the machine reader is going to destroy the score, but will the human reader overlook the outline submission? I got a 5 on my first AWA but was going for a 5.5-6 on this one.

Will they ignore the outline when scoring my essay? It was very obvious where my actual response started.

..should I cancel my score?

Thanks. I'm just really nervous and that essay issue also distracted me a great deal during quant.

Some other background info: Indian male, 5 years work exp, two promotions under my belt and I've led two teams and advised numerous newer employees. My undergrad GPA was a 3.95 from UMD, with degrees in computer engineering and biology. I have a few personal projects that I'm very passionate about, and have also led a sold out dance competition during my time at UMD (managing 15 people).

Well, it sounds to me like you feel like you be leaving money on the table if you didn't take the exam again next month. I realize you probably will not be studying for it, but please don't delude yourself, this will take a toll and it will distract your attention from the place it is most important right now, and I understand your references are already squared away but if you're doing several applications two months is definitely needed and I don't think you cheat on that in any way. If you're not working with a consultant, you will need to actively get several other parties involved, people that know you well as well if you will that don't know you to make sure that everything is hitting on all cylinders. Not that I think that's a substitute for professional advice, but better than nothing. What I mean to say is you're going to need to accommodate a few different schedules and iterate on these essays a few times so just make sure that you don't try to sell yourself a story about how you'll be able to do it all and also be Aces at work, we all have our limits.

Thanks again to both of you for the insightful replies; I really appreciate it.

Paul, I hadn't updated my resume in about five years but whipped one up tonight (of course, I'd need one for my applications :)) and will get that to you shortly. The one thing that I do wish the resume could do is convey my thoughts and personality, but I suppose that's what the essays are for. Thank you for helping out above and beyond.

Farrell, what you said resonates exactly with how I'm feeling -- I feel as though I am leaving money on the table by not taking the exam again -- though I should probably listen to an expert in the field over my gut here :). I am currently considering working with a consultant to help me really package and show my best side to the adcoms. One of the first steps for that, from my preliminary research, was to get a draft resume ready. Thanks to Paul, I've got one that I can use for now! I really did not want any less than two full months to prepare my essays! Re: being able to do it all, you're absolutely correct, we all have our limits and I think learning that can be one of the most insightful things for anyone.

Thanks!

Just to follow up -- I received my official score today and it looks like I got a 6 on the AWA so I really should not have freaked out the way I did during the exam; thanks to Paul & Farrell for helping me relax a bit after my panic. It looks like the readers will throw out any accidentally-included outlines.
