We can completely disregard the fact that the artist lost 2 canvases and consider that she bought just 8 for $80

Cost Price for 8 canvases, C = $80
Selling Price for 8 canvases, S = $ x

\(Profit = \frac{S-C}{C}\)

\(\frac{25}{100} = \frac{x-80}{80}\)

\(x=100\) (This is for 8 canvases)

Then the selling price of each canvas is \(\frac{100}{8} = $12.5\)

Answer is (B)

25% profit on 80=20
So, selling price=100
She has 8 canvas left
Price of each=100/8=12.5

Hence B

An artist bought 10 canvasses for a total cost of $80. If she lost two of the canvasses, at what price would she have to sell each of the remaining canvasses to earn a total profit of 25% of her total cost?

(A) $10.00
(B) $12.50
(C) $15.00
(D) $100.00
(E) $120.00

Letting R = the total revenue and C = the original cost of the canvasses, we can create the equation:

R - C = 0.25C

R - 80 =0.25(80)

R = 80 + 20 = 100

So each of the remaining canvasses would need to be sold for 100/8 = 12.50 dollars.

Dear Bunuel,

Generally profit is calculated for the same number of items sold and produced. For example - I buy a total of 10 items and sell 5 items. So my profit will be calculated on 5 items sold and 5 items which costed me. ( And not 10 items which i initially bought in total).

Similarly, in this question, when we calculate profit ( P = R - C), why are no of items sold is 8 ( for revenue) and no of items costed me is for 10( for cost) Coz my even though my total cost is 80, i am selling 8 items and so my total cost should be for 8 items only right ?

Where am i wrong here?

The question asks -

Bunuel

THe question asks to find profit on entire cost price hence we must take that into factor !!!
