An estate of $216,000 is divided equally among p people who must each pay the lawyer d percent of their share. What is the value of d?

(1) p = 4
(2) The lawyer will receive $270 from each of the p people.

Kudos for a correct solution.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION

Correct Answer: C

Statement 1 allows us to determine how much each of the 4 people received $216,000/4 = $54,000, but does not provide enough information to solve for d. Statement 1 is, therefore, insufficient.

Statement 2 tells us the sum that the lawyer received, but without knowing the number of people, or the value of each share, we cannot determine the overall value of the lawyer's receipts, or the percentage of each share that the lawyer receives. Therefore, statement 2 is insufficient.

When the statements are taken together, we can determine the value of each share, and will therefore be able to determine what percent of each share $270 represents. Accordingly, both statements together are sufficient, and the correct answer is C.

p=4 hence each persons share 54000 and using the 2nd statement 270/54000*100=1/2 %.Done Hence C

Kudos for a correct solution.

Lawyer gets = d*216000/p ---- (1)

P and d are unknown.

1. Give the value of P(=4). But d is unknown
2. Gives the amount which the lawyer earns per person. But p is unknown thereby giving us less data to calculate the percentage.

Combining 1 & 2 and inputting the values in eq (1)

270 = d*216000/4

d = 0.5%

Thus Option C.
