Hi, I currently have a 690 and want to apply to hec for the 24 intake. I have 4 years of work ex in data science with a big brand and have decent acads throughout, along with volunteering experience. I am a female applicant who is a masters in economics but despite all this I keep hearing that 690 for anyone from the indian applicant pool is low. Can any admitted folks/consultants comment on this? Thanks
Hi, it is important to understand how admissions officers evaluate your profiles. I can shed some light on a few aspects here (based on my discussions with INSEAD adcoms)
If you are from an overrepresented pool (e.g. Indian IT /technical male applicants), it is good to have a balanced GMAT score. Admissions committees evaluate your performance along with that of your peers on a normalized curve. For example, a Q49 score is considered borderline elite for strong Indian applicants to top global business schools. So, if your quant score is close to this value or you have crossed this threshold, the admissions committee is confident that you can handle the academically demanding curricula.
Your verbal score is more likely to reflect your ability to participate in discussions in a truly global group.
Similarly, for native English speakers (such as applicants from the US and the UK), adcoms would be concerned if the applicant’s verbal score is well below the threshold for their population.
As an Indian applicant, if you have a balanced GMAT score, meaning you performed well on the Quant section, you can be less concerned about your overall GMAT score specifically for European schools. European schools tend to be more understanding of non-native speakers’ verbal performance.
Possessing prior degrees in business is another way to demonstrate your capability to manage the MBA curriculum, which can also lead to obtaining a GMAT exemption. This is why many applicants with previous degrees in finance or certifications such as CFA are able to waive the GMAT requirement.
