Honestly don't know what went wrong...
Sloan is my dream school.
Graduated from the top university in China at top 15% in my department. American fortune 500 company, two promotions in two year, and a 750 gmat.
And I am pretty sure that my cover letter demonstrated fit with their culture as requested with examples closely related to my focused career path.
And I took a 16 hour flight to visit campus in May!!!! And I am a re-applicant! So pretty strong commitment right? (last year to LGO with only one-tear experience, maybe stretched too much)
Completely shocked and devastated by the ding......Anybody wanna share some thoughts?

Your stats look very strong (amazing). It is a crapshoot as to what went wrong - I have seen other folks get invites that can't come close to your stats and at the same time something must have turned them off. It is always hard to be a re-applicant - I feel Adcom has access to last year's app and if they don't see big enough difference, they rely on the last year's judgement. Only other consideration is competitive China market and extracurricular activities - not "fun" enough problem

This is the reason you apply to multiple schools - sometimes schools may think you applies to H/S/W and you will likely get in there, so you won't pick Sloan as the result and they don't want to be week. I have seen people get admitted to top 10 and rejected from top 20 - all kinds of crazy stuff happens. One of the mods was sharing that last year he got 7 invites from 13 apps in R2. This year, he got 0 invites out of 8 apps in R1 . It is really an odd year (I have been saying this for a while, but this year is more so than usual). Keep applying - don't get discouraged. They know you are applying to multiple schools and you should!

P.S. Your English sounds fantastic by the way!

It is really hard to say with MIT.

My hypothesis after my ding was that since they don't ask for any essays, your work-ex and education credentials are the only thing that they can really judge you on. Going by that, your profile looks pretty good. Since, you also got the axe, my hypothesis goes right out of the window.

I, too, complied with most of the requirements stated on their website - Innovation, leadership, etc. , still couldn't make it. Could be the GMAT score in my case. I wish we could get some sort of feedback.

Hey Congratulations! You have gotten invite from all great schools. Do you mind sharing your profile with us?

Happy to - what other information are you looking for?

Went to a top US undergraduate business school (considered an Ivy of the Midwest). Spent three years working in Consulting for an MBBD firm. Lots of extracurricular, many specifically focused on social impact.

Tried to focus my essays on non-work related experiences.

Thanks buddy, for your good words.

Didn't they say that re-applicants usually get better chance? And I got my promotion this September with a 50% up in salary, right before I got the application in..So not much difference from last year?.....Well

And "fun" part....I have done tons of extracurricular activities in college, student union, student government, admission ambassador blabla...Born in UK, grew up in Beijing, traveled to 17 foreign countries....28 out of 34 Chinese provinces(like states in US, including remote places like Tibet), I do skiing, I got my scuba diving license....

Chinese market is competitive....but really this competitive?!

I think I am going to call them and see if I can get a feedback......

That's exactly what confuses me.......They don't ask for essays, which mean they are mainly judging by your stats and your professional achievements...then...why?!

I think that your hypothesis is still valid, I felt that MIT didn't really want to "know" the applicants in a very deep level. Since they are very selective they might have cut off at one weak point, 2 years experience might seem a bit weak to them compared to the application pool, or they might have a similar profile with a higher GMAT score.

For US applicants they have more seats so I don't think that it is wise to compare international applicants with US applicants. Most of the time US schools end up getting internationals who are maybe in top %000,1 of their countries, but for US applicants it is maybe %1. I don't want to sound bitter or anything, it is normal to create their classes with their nationals, but it creates a big difference for internationals. It is especially ironic when you think of MIT's interview essay question.

It sure is.

I think this discussion is quite futile. You never know what part of your application could be a red flag. It is better to take the decision as it is, put your head down and prepare for the next college.

Hello guys,

Firstly congrats to those who got the interview invites. I got my ding through an email last night. The mail from Mr.Rod Garcia also mentioned that MIT would consider my application for the Sloan Fellow program and whether I would be interested. Just wanted to check if this is usually how it is with rejected candidates?
