I’ve been waitlisted. Can anyone explain how this works? I thought waitlists happen after interviews.

Also any tips on how to strengthen your application will be great.

From the decision tracker, I see that 5 got admitted out of the 25 waitlisted but keep in mind those numbers are from the limited data we have on the decision tracker.

Mid-December for me (almost 6 months now). Nothing heard from Admissions other than that they'll begin the waitlist review in the spring. I suspect spring is in April after the R3 end date of April 1.

I have heard a few other schools ask the waitlisted applicant to tell them a date by when they have to give a decision. Does Stern do anything like that?

No hard and fast date. Stern's FAQ says they'll begin review in the Spring and could go all the way to program begin date -- https://apply.stern.nyu.edu/waitlistfaq.pdf

I know a few schools who have waitlisted an applicant and sent an admission with scholarship later. I am not sure about stern though.

I was hoping Stern would send out invites to R1, R2 waitlisted candidates along with R3 applicants but they waitlisted Indians in R3 as well. Looks like they will take this into April by which time all those with other options will withdraw application and only the interested ones remain. Looks like yield game to me.
