Thanks a lot for the reply! I checked the Masters in Entrepreneurship from UMich, it looks interesting. I was hoping you could help me with a few things:
1) What are my chances at schools like Booth, Stanford or Haas? Is my work experience too less for the top 20?
2) What is missing from my profile?
3) Do I have a shot at the schools mentioned above if I show leadership and have startup experience? (I'm planning to join a software/retail startup in India)

You're welcome!

1. I don't think your chances at STanford, Booth, or Haas are very good. I don't recommend applying. Your work experience is on the low side for the top 20, Aim for schoosl with lower average ages, like CMU Tepper or Rochester Simon.
2. I high level of achievement, leadership, and impact. You may have it, but it's not showing in your post. Your GPA could also be an issue.
3. It depends what you do at the startup. If you make a major contribution and difference, then it will enhance your profile. Working at a start-up is not automatically a plus or a negative.

Best,
Linda

Hello Linda,

Thank you for the reply! It is very helpful to know which schools/region to target

Since my last post I have changed my company. Have been working with a startup in the education technology space in India for the past 9 months or so. I have been working in a Sales/Business Development (BD) role. During this time I have covered the entire sales/BD cycle from market research, data qualification/organization, cold-calling, pitching and closing for the B2B product. I have worked with the product development team to shape some aspects of the product. I have been closely involved with the strategy or approach to the market (which market to target, whether to go for inbound or outbound sales, product placement etc.). I work directly with the Sales/BD head to handle pan-India marketing/sales for the product. Most of the sales/planning activites for the product have since been handed over to me. Now I'm in more of a managerial/leadership role for the recently launched B2C product where I have to decide the process for sales and partnerships with channels for sales. I will be handling a team of 3-4 to streamline the company's sales activities. I think this has added significantly to my experience and will really give me some quality leadership experience.

I would really appreciate any suggestions for improvements in the profile and your opinion on whether this adds to my previous post. I plan to work on Business Development for technology companies. Any schools you would suggest in particular for my profile and my plans for technology/strategy?

Thank you!

Assuming a 720 GMAT for you, my list really hasn't changed much. YOu progressed nicely at work it seems, but you still have that low GPA. I still suggest you consider HEC Paris, UNC, Duke, UT Austin, Emory, USC Marshall, IE, and Darden . You may want to add Foster to the list.

Best,
Linda

Hello Linda,

It has been a little more than 3 years since my last post on this thread. Would really like your input on my profile evaluation. Here are the changes since last time:

1) I had a successful stint at the education technology startup that I was working at. I set up operations and sales for them in 2 cities entirely by myself. I was offered almost a 100% hike towards the end of 2014.

2) I left that startup and helped start a new one as a founding member. Unfortunately, it was shut down 4 months ago. It was funded by a very reputed VC (think Sequoia/Accel/Tiger Global), we raised a sizable amount of money in our Series A funding and were among the top 2 in India in our field (in terms of revenue, growth and market cap).

I was the the Sales Head there, managed 65-70 people and was responsible for two major cities as well (operations, sales, HR, administration etc.). During my time at the company:

A. I led the expansion efforts and set up operations in 2 major cities by studying the market/competition/scope there and devising the best entry plan accordingly. This meant good numbers right from day one and meeting of targets, even exceeding them on occasion.

B. Set up the pay structure, hierarchy, targets, reporting and evaluation for my department (Sales).

C. Collaborated with the product, operations and customer service team to make our service as smooth as possible. Developed protocols and the software product by constantly collaborating with these teams, resulting in smaller and fewer delays in our service, thus driving throughput and revenue up.

D. Before hiring, worked with the rest of the founding team and HR to set HR guidelines for the company for all departments.

We had been mentioned in Forbes as one of the 20 startups to watch out for in 2016.

The company had to be shut down due to a massive drought in funding in India and I've not taken up a new job since then. I have made a 3500 mile motorcycle trip across North-East India and plan to write a blog about it to create awareness about the area. I will also be working on a film as Assistant Director while preparing for my GMAT.

My primary interests still remain: Technology/Strategy/Consulting.
Work Ex: 5 years.
Applying for: Fall 2018 intake.

Would be great if you can help me with some direction as to which colleges I can apply to considering my profile and which ones I have a chance of getting into.

Thank you.

PS: Apologies for the long post!

Your work experience sounds interesting. What GMAT score do you anticipate? What was your GPA and major and where did you go to college?

Linda

Hello Linda,

1) I anticipate a GMAT score in the 730-750 range.
2) I majored in Electronics and Telecommunication from Pune University (India, non-IIT).
3) The free calculation on WES gave me a GPA of 3.0. Other than that, I have no way of knowing the GPA for sure. Is there any other method to find out?

With these details, which schools would you say I am eligible for?

Thank you.

Consider programs like Cornell Johnson, Georgetown, UNC, UT, Duke Fuqua, and USC. Since your grades are on the low side, check out 5 A's for a Low GPA.

Best,
Linda
