Hi guys,

I am a 29 year old Egyptian with a technical background and I am considering applying for Judge MBA. Can you give me some feedback?

Education:
I have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a 77% degree from one Egypt's top schools. In Egypt it is a 5 year degree and 77% is a very good degree compared to excellent which starts at 85%. After that, I was selected for a scholarship with an acceptance rate of 1% to continue my diploma in Mechatronics, and used this diploma to pursue a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering in Germany with a 1.3 degree "100%= 1 in Germany, and 5= failing".

Work experience:
I have worked as an international freelance inspector before graduation and have travelled to China, Italy, Finland and many other European countries. During my Master's degree in Germany, I had a couple of student jobs as an engineer and started a full-time engineering position right after, also in Germany, focusing on customer support for 1.5 years. After that, however, I moved into product management for more than two years. The product manager role is truly international in the sense that I coordinate work with other groups in Japan, USA, France, China and of course Germany. It also involved strategy definition and business development.

Extracurricular activities:
This was really during my undergrad-studies in Egypt, as I participated in a number of NGO initiatives with a cultural background and was a project manager for an arts and culture program, leading 100 volunteers. In Germany I only did 3 months of volunteering, which I think is too small to mention.

Languages:
German, English, Arabic, and basic Spanish.

GMAT score:
Not yet available. I scored 540 on the test exam without preparation, I have 7 weeks left to prepare with about 10-15 hours per week.

Hi Lci,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your GMAT score is quite low as compared to the average required for oxford. I suggest you try to improve your GMAT score (700 at least) to maximize your chances. On the work front, you have a strong 9 years of experience, which should help you bring your leadership qualities to the table. As an older applicant, Executive MBA will help you advance within your company/industry. As you want to continue in your current sector, an Executive MBA may be beneficial.

Hope this helps!

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and answer any of your concerns. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to work on international experience, resume and LOR

Hi there AlphaKilo,
Did you wind up applying to Judge already? Based on the limited info shared here I feel you would be considered, but it will still be quite competitive being an Indian applicant, who already has an MBA... even if the MBA was early in your career, you have to basically convince admissions that they should admit YOU over others who don't already have a fairly equivalent degree. If you have strong examples of leadership and achievement in your professional experiences and strong recommendations that could help, and even your 'side hustle' could be an additional angle to help you be remembered. If your leadership in the NGO/community work is really impactful that also could help. Feel free to register for one of our free 30 minute consultations if you have not applied yet and would like to discuss your profile further!

Hi julia0729,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, your GMAT score is quite good. On the work front, your work experience as a manager demonstrates excellent leadership abilities. You will need to emphasize the lessons you learned while working in teams. Along with this, you may demonstrate how your experience as a project manager and architect has changed you into a better future leader. The fact that your work experience has been highly progressive and that you have contributed to your organization will make the application process easier for you. B-schools are looking for applicants with a wide set of values and a diversified profile. Candidates that have shown progress throughout their tenure are given preference. In addition, you should include any experiences that have aided you in developing and honing your talents at work. All of these will come together to exhibit your candidacy for your dream school.

Your ECs and voluntary work are interesting. Your willingness to enhance your knowledge and learn something new is exemplified by your interest in trying new things/environments. The AdComs will much appreciate it. Your goals are quite clear. However, you will need to elaborate on it and connect it to your previous work experience. Long-term goals are great! Just be sure to explain how an MBA from Judge can help you reach your goals. Also, try to give your goals a global shape. Here is an article over connecting dots in an application. It talks about how to bring these best essays possible for your applications.

Overall, you have a strong profile and a good shot at Judge. Which other schools are you considering? What will be most important about your application is connecting the experiential dots and creating a compelling narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to answer any of your concerns and discuss your further chances at b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Maximize your chances for top MBA programs in January intake

Cheers!

Hi julia0729,

Thanks for posting and glad to hear of your interest in Cambridge for your MBA!

Based on the info you shared so far, if you execute your applications well, based upon what I have seen working with Indonesian female candidates for Judge in the past (I actually happened to help a client also interested in the fashion industry and entrepreneurship gain acceptance at Judge for example, small world), I would be cautiously optimistic that you would be competitive and considered at Judge. I do feel you will benefit greatly from revamping your CV/descriptions of your professional experience for a more general audience though, so as not to fall into a group of applicants who can appear TOO technical or jargon-focused in your applications, fyi.

So far I would identify the following strengths to your profile:

-respectable GMAT
-strong academics
-sufficient work experience at reputable companies
-people & project management skills
-quant & analytical skills
-example/s of taking initiative to improve things/ propose things (shows leadership)
-volunteering experience

Then there are the following potential weaknesses or challenges:

-lack of international experience
-as mentioned--currently your experiences are less accessible to a general audience i.e. "Leading risk register assessment and creation...", "SOP & RACI Matrix drafting for Operation, Engineering & SHE", " fit-gap analysis, blueprint & functional spec creation, SIT, UAT, end-users training and post go-live support" (rationale-- you not only want to ensure all admissions readers quickly 'get' your work but also to show that you will be effective at communicating your work experiences to classmates fyi)

And the following unknowns of course:

-extent of your community involvement; leadership within that?
-how your essays will shape up
-quality of your recommendations
-interview potential

In terms of the lack of international experience, while it is a slight weakness, one action you can take to do your best to overcome that would be to ensure you make it clear why the globally-focused Judge MBA is of interest to you and how it will benefit your career. Showing a passion FOR global experience and specifics on why you need and want that focus will help. Additionally, based upon my experiences working with similar applicants at Judge, it will be vital that you connect your goals with Judge-specific knowledge and experiential opportunities; for example how will the Global Consulting Project help prepare you for your ultimate goal to start your own (potentially global) company? And so forth.

Good luck with your application process, and on a personal note I absolutely loved my time at Judge! If you would like to connect further, you can register here for a 30 minute consultation at any point, which is simply a chance to discuss your profile and CV further and address additional questions you may have. https://mbamission.as.me/?calendarID=5208558

Hey Thonereturns,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

Your profile appears positive at first glance. In terms of academics, your GMAT score is within the range for Judge, but putting an extra 20–30 points on the board will help you increase your prospects. Other academic records provided from your end also add value to your application.

On the work front, your work experience seems interesting. I can see that you have listed vivid roles which would definitely help step up your game; all you need to do is portray your roles & responsibilities, skill-set, and professional accolades in a more quantized manner. Moreover, the international exposure in your role will help since Judge school prefers candidates with strong international experience/exposure. AdComs would be interested in hearing about your journey, so make sure to highlight your strengths. Everything depends on how you present it to the AdComs. You have extensive work experience; all you need to do is make a strong case for it, which is where most applicants fall short. Also, it takes great courage to stand for your conscience and speak up for your values at the cost of your job (When you left your job due to unethical handlings by the company) this should be the major highlight of your profile.

ECs are very important when looked from the AdComs point of view. They add diversity to your profile and help you stand out from the pool of applicants. Social work is highly valued and appreciated, your involvement with the NGOs and working for the elderly will help you justify your social responsibilities. Also poetry and blogs will help you bring your euphonious side to the AdComs. For your reference, I suggest you go through our article on How to draft Exemplary ECAs for MBA Application, to understand the importance of crafting ECAs essays that inspire.!

As you are planning to switch your career. You may want to read an article on Career switch, you will get some insights.

Overall you have a good profile and a good chance at Judge. You may add Haas, USC Marshall to your list as well. What's going to matter most about your application is how you link experiential dots and make a great narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to get on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and strengthen your chances further. Feel free to schedule a call with us at your convenience.

Cheers!
