once you've submitted your application, these types of changes in employment status can be seen positively by the AdCom as long as you can justify them as a way to get closer to your career goals. Can you link this volunteering activity to your goals somehow?

As to when to update the school, if you're successful in the application process and the school runs a background check, they'll know when you left your company. So in order to avoid any issues, it would be better to update the school as soon as you leave your company.

hello, I let admission know of my plan by email this weekend. Now I am nervous about how they will take it. I will interview next month, so I suppose I will find out. In your opinion, is leaving my job post application and interview invite, but pre-interview itself a bad thing? I am hoping it will be a positive since it is to volunteer?

how the AdCom perceives this move and whether it will have some impact (positive or negative) on the final decision will depend on whether this volunteer position is consistent with your application. For example, if your goals involve working in pharma in emerging markets and you're volunteering in Cameroon to provide medicine to people in need, then it could be seen positively.

It will also depend on how strong your profile and application are. If the school really wants you, the fact that you left your company at this point will probably make no difference to them. But if your application is a borderline case, it could help tip the balance. Whether in your favor or not, again, it depends.

In any case, the fact that you have been invited to interview is a clear sign that the school is interested in you. So just try to come up with a story that is consistent with your application.
