Hello,

I have a question, if I have my test in November, should I buy OG 2021 or 2022? Also, it's OG + practice exam will be enough or you guys buy all OG Bundle? including Verba and Quant Review?

Thanks
Hello, retnodew. As was noted above, there are no new questions in the OG 2022. (Interestingly enough, a handful of questions were removed.) To answer your other questions, I would ask you to assess your goals for the test. For a student who wishes to earn a 700 or above, more questions are generally preferable. If you are just getting started and you plan to take the exam in November, you will want to get your hands on some material soon. The GMAT™ often takes a few months of solid study time to build conceptual understanding and hone your technique. Many students make the mistake of blowing through the OG without really improving. Keep in mind that completing more questions will not necessarily make you better at solving them. After an initial period of improvement, most likely attributable to gaining familiarity with the test itself, you will probably plateau, and it would be a shame to have gone through the OG in the process.

My advice? Create some sort of study plan (or look one up) and stick to it. Bouncing around from question to question will only take you so far, but practice, say, coordinate geometry questions in earnest, then combinatorics, and so on, one topic at a time, and you will set yourself up for success. In the end, it is not absolutely necessary to buy the extra review guides, but those couple hundred questions can prove helpful for practice once you have grounded yourself in theory. (Yes, Verbal is more than reading and intuiting the correct answer.)

Good luck with your studies.

Thank you Andrew for your reply.

I just finished strategy guide from manhattan prep (both quant and verbal) and now looking for more exercise. That's why I am considering to buy practice exam 3-6 from official gmat to get familiar with the real test. If you have any other suggestion, please share. Thanks

Ah, I see. If you need more questions to practice, then yes, by all means, seek them out. The Practice Question Banks are an excellent resource for further practice. Just make sure you tick the boxes for official questions for Verbal. (Many Quant questions from third parties, such as GMAT Club itself, are high-quality, although I would still prioritize official questions.) Do not practice questions tagged "GMAT Prep," or your mock scores may become artificially inflated. Should you purchase those extra practice tests? I would say yes, they are worth the investment. Nearly every high-scoring member takes several mocks before sitting for the real exam, and nothing beats official material.

Good luck with your studies. If you have further questions, you need only ask.

Hi Retno,

I think that we have exchanged some emails recently, but the subject of the OGs never came up. While the OG books are great sources for practice questions, they are not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. You should absolutely include one of the main OGs with whatever other study materials you choose to use, but the recent versions of those books (the GMAT2022, GMAT2021 and GMAT2020) are almost identical from a practice-question standpoint - meaning that you don't need to work through all of them.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

OG 2021 will be good enough.'
You should supplement the material depending on your weak areas.

Probably good to still buy the Official-Guide if possible (there are e-versions available, too). One benefit, for example, is being able to leverage the online Wiley version that allows you to create times sets.

How to get a V40 or higher on the GMAT? What about a V51?

Hi retnodew

OG may be a great source for solving GMAT like questions, however, it is definitely not the ideal way to prepare in your case. Moreover, you may find that the OG is a good option as a question bank but lacks detailed explanations for you to use for improvement. It’s always better to prepare with a definitive resource to help you learn concepts while formulating a consistent strategy to solve questions before practicing them from the OG. This way, your preparation will be a lot more structured, and the chances of you leaving gaps in your learning will be significantly less. Focus on improving the method you follow to solve questions because that's what stops people from scoring 700+.
