Are You Ready to Apply to Fuqua Weekend Executive MBA? Here’s What You Need to Know.

There is still time to apply to the Duke-Fuqua Weekend Executive MBA (EMBA)! With a carefully crafted application, candidates can still make the Round 5 and Round 6 deadlines:

Round 5 deadline: February 11, 2015

Round 6 deadline: April 1, 2015

Let’s take a look at the class profile and admission requirements so you can get a better understanding of how you might fare in admissions success.

All Fuqua Weekend EMBA applicants are required to have a minimum of 5 years work experience. However, the average admitted student has 11 years of work experience and an average age of 36. Students must also provide GMAT or GRE scores, a letter of support from their employer, and 2 letters of recommendation (one of which should be from a direct supervisor). Remember, letters of recommendation are one of your greatest opportunities to shine, so make sure yours are excellent and speak to only your greatest qualities and unique contributions.

The essay portion is where you have a chance to really stand out (on top of all of your other qualifications). This is where the admissions committee has the chance to hear your voice and learn more about you. Fuqua’s required essay questions for the Weekend EMBA are listed below.

2014-2015 Required Essay Questions

1. How will your skills, training and background enhance your cohort's experience? Please include both personal and professional insight that may not be apparent through your resume and other application materials. Your response should be a maximum of 250 words.

2. The Weekend Executive MBA program brings together a unique network of students representing a diverse set of companies, industries, and personal and professional backgrounds. The interactive classroom experience is facilitated by Duke's top-ranked faculty, and students have access to our highly qualified Career Management Center staff for support in managing career growth. Serving participants who are also working professionals, The Weekend Executive MBA program allows students to immediately apply new skills in the workplace and see classroom lessons applied in real world situations. How will your Duke MBA experience benefit you, and your organization? Your response should be a maximum of 500 words.

Fuqua has followed the trend of most top MBA programs by significantly cutting the maximum word count of its essays in the past few years. You have a total of 750 words to express yourself (as well as an optional essay prompt to explain any extenuating circumstances in your application, if applicable to your case). That’s a lot of personality and experience to fit into 750 words! As such, each narrative chosen should be very carefully crafted.

The essay prompts are divided into two main topics: contributions to class, and contributions to your real-world work. The first essay should articulate how your past experiences will be a great beneficence to the Duke-Fuqua learning environment, while the second essay should explain how your future experiences will help you make an impact in your organization. Both prompts provide ample flexibility for candidates to flaunt their experiences, passions, skills and personalities.

Above all, make sure that your application is excellent from all angles. Be thorough and never give the admission committee a reason to reject you. Good luck in the admissions process!
