Georgetown University introduces MS in enironmental and sustainability management

Georgetown University is offering a new interdisciplinary M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management (MS-ESM). The program is a collaboration between the Georgetown Environment Initiative, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and the McDonough School of Business, and is targeted at students who want to tackle the environmental issues through the power of business.

This 11-month STEM-designated program, which uses a combination of courses and experiential activities, is designed to give future business leaders the knowledge, skills, and determination to develop sustainable business and environmental practices.

The MS-ESM program will start in August 2022 on the Georgetown University campus in Washington, D.C. Students will have contact with thought leaders, policy makers, industry experts, global corporations, nonprofits, and government entities based in the nation’s capital. The program will be in-person, with a combination of modular, six-week skill-building classes, and full-semester science-oriented classes.

“This degree encapsulates the idea that both environmental science and business principles are vitally important to achieving sustainability goals,” stated Maria Petrova, co-academic director and Assistant Director of Graduate Education at the Georgetown Environment Initiative. “We designed this unique degree to ensure students are equipped with the skills and expertise to advance sustainability in their future careers.”

The program consists of 16 courses (30 credits). Students will study topics including sustainability and environmental science, climate change impact and measurement, energy technology principles and applications, environmental data visualization, accounting fundamentals and ESG finance for sustainability management, climate-change economics, leadership, sustainable operations, and impact investing. Students will begin their studies with a co-designed, interdisciplinary module covering the associations of environment, business, and sustainability management, imparted with tenets of ethics and justice. The final course will have students working in teams on real-life, hands-on projects, in consultation with an organization to get experience in solving business and environmental questions.

Alumni of the MS-ESM program will have many career opportunities upon graduation. There is an expected growth of employment of environmental scientists and specialists of 8% between 2018 and 2028, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. This growth is greater and more rapid than the average of 5.2% for all professions. Graduates will have their choice of careers in diverse industries and functions, in corporations with environmentally focused missions, as well as in business, governmental or nonprofit establishments working toward making sustainability part of their core mission.
