When a direct supervisor might get upset that you might be leaving…

Asking for recommendations can be a tough process, especially when it means that, if admitted, you would be leaving your place of work. There are many candidates who worry that they cannot inform their direct supervisor about their plans for applying to business school out of fear that their direct supervisor will be upset at the prospect of losing a valued team member. If this is the case, candidates might worry that their direct supervisor will not be supportive of their application, and may even evaluate them poorly in a recommendation.

The good news is that this situation is not particularly unique. Admissions committees are used to receiving applications from candidates who are facing this challenge. In fact, many MBA applications give candidates a section to explain a reason for not obtaining a recommendation from a direct supervisor. Therefore, if you do not get a recommendation from a direct supervisor, you can still fare well in the admissions process. In fact, there are certain tactics to working around the direct supervisor recommendation. One tip is to get a recommendation from another professional in your company who is superior to you and interacts with you often. This person can therefore attest credibly to your performance, and perhaps be seen as a fair trade by the admissions committee to take the place of a direct supervisor. If you can get two recommendations from such persons, all the better!
