require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration to kill
require that there be a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of

I would like to ask about "require X to Y" I have read that the X has to be a person or organization in some book I am using.
Probably OG said same thing, I think. But, this answer's X is "a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration ". It is neither person nor organization.

According to a recent study, hand sanitizers require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of most harmful bacteria and viruses.

(A) require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of
(B) require that there be a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration to kill
(C) require that a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration be present to kill
(D) require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration to kill
(E) require that there be a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of

Manhattan Prep Official Explanation

The phrase "require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of" is wordy and unidiomatic. The proper idiom takes the more concise form "require X to Y."

(A) This choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.
(B) This choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic and wordy form "require that there be X to Y." The proper idiom is "require X to Y."
(C) This choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic and wordy form "require that X be Z to Y." The proper idiom is "require X to Y."
(D) CORRECT. The choice uses the proper idiom "require X to Y" where X is the noun phrase "a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration" and Y is the verb infinitive "kill."
(E) This choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic and wordy form "require that there be X for Y." The proper idiom is "require X to Y."

Why is there no subjunctive in play ?

Require that <Subject> be < Verb >. Why not C ? "Require" expects subjunctive ..right ?

Experts please.
Not if we introduce the noun directly. For example:
He requires a 700 to get into that program.

Option C is a little too wordy. It'd be like saying:
He requires that a 700 be part of his application to get into that program.

Hi armaan112,

No, require does not always take a that after it. For example, require is like ~need in the sentence below:

1. They don't require a GMAT score. ← "They don't need a GMAT score."
