Q: What advice beyond scoring high on the GMAT (720+) do you give to applicants that have a lower GPA in undergrad? I realize two of the main pieces of the puzzle (undergrad GPA and GMAT), but can you talk a little bit on how else an applicant can distinguish himself?
A: I usually tell candidates that at the point you are applying to an MBA program, there are things you can control and things that you cannot. Your undergraduate GPA is one of the things that you cannot control. I would encourage you to focus on the things that you can when you are working on your application. Your interview and essays are two of the best opportunities that you have. They can tell a story and help us understand a little more about your experience, skills, and professional presence. The GMAT/GRE is another thing you can control. If you didn’t preform well in undergrad in your quantitative courses, focusing on the quant section of the GMAT/GRE is helpful. That will help show us that you can handle the rigor of the program.
Q: What are the most common mistakes you see applicants make every year?
A: I’m always surprised by the amount of applicants that haven’t put a lot of thought or research into what they want to do after the MBA. Also, some candidates have trouble explaining their strengths, weaknesses and transferable skills they have which is unfortunate since that is an opportunity to sell yourself.
Q: What is an underrated aspect of Owen life? We have heard about the collaborative culture and personalized touch students receive, but what is something about the program that often gets overlooked?
A: Great question! I think the small class size and personalized touch plays out in lots of different ways but one way that is often overlooked is the ability to customize your curriculum. You have the opportunity to have more that one concentration and really structure the program to work for you and your goals.
Q: Any chance for financial aid if I apply in round 3?
A: We typically do still have some scholarship money left for exceptional candidates that apply for the 3rd round.
Q: Is it that applying in first round increases the chances of getting admission?
A: If you are comparing yourself to the class profile and you are above average then you are likely a competitive applicant no matter when you apply. However, if you think of scholarship as a big pot of money, it dwindles as the year goes on. Also, toward the end of the year, instead of having 175 spots, we usually just have a handful or less.
Q: What is your favorite extra-curricular activity/club/event that Owen students can participate in?
A: I would probably have to say the Global Food Festival. Every Thursday night Owen hosts a Closing Bell and each week, a different club sponsors the event. In the spring, the Global Business Association sponsors the Global Food Festival where the Owen band plays and students from different countries and parts of the USA host a table with their native cuisine. It is so much fun!
