General question, with the double dip recession/stagnation coming due to plunging oil prices , how do you feel about doing an MBA now? As with other things in life, isn't good timing important for a joining decision ?

In a bit of a predicament for choosing between Foster and Kenan Flagler. UNC is ranked higher but Foster enjoys the dual advantage of better location and smaller school. I want to major in Management Consulting. Can someone please help me out.

Thanks!

Hi luckydips, obviously there are a ton of factors to consider in making this decision, but I think the most important consideration is: Where do you want to live/work after grad school? Foster has excellent employment outcomes, largely due to their location and relationships with Seattle's employers. If you want to live and work in the Pacific NW, I think Foster would be a much better choice between the two, but if you are trying to get a job on the east coast, UNC is probably more recognized.

I am also planning to pursue Management Consulting post grad school. I will most likely live/work in whichever city I go to grad school (for me that's Seattle, Austin, Chicago, or San Francisco, depending on where I get in) unless I find the right international opportunity.

Good luck in your decision making process!

Management consulting is pretty broad. Also, ranking is almost a non-issue, both schools are regional schools with good reputations in their region. I think UNC has better placements with MBB (probably because the program is bigger that it makes sense to recruit there). Top 20 percent at each school is probably competitive for MBB but at Foster that's only 20 people, not all of which want to do consulting. Although I heard from an AdCom member that BCG is recruiting on campus this year (and a person or two usually ends up at McKinsey). But you need to be self-aware about your prior experience, GMAT, pedigree. If you don't think you'd have a good shot at MBB then it's probably a wash. All of the other consulting companies (Deloitte, PWC, Accenture, etc.) recruit at Foster as well as several niche/boutique consulting firms. Personally, I think if you're not a MBB person Deloitte S&O is the way to go (obviously easier said than done). Intern with them and accept a job offer and they will reimburse for the second year of school (plus normal signing bonus).

I think current dip is overstated... plunging oil prices are a wash. Obviously it's bad for Texas, North Dakota, etc (and alternative energy)... but consumers have more discretionary income... good for retailers... good for auto manufactures... good for home buying... etc. Current pricing of risk is "rich" right now... some risk of significant defaults in junk bond market (which is something like 13% energy) might trigger some repricing of risk (i.e. a bigger dip)... but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. It's not going to trigger a recession and/its not a Financial Crisis.

Plus, Seattle (where most of Foster alums end up working has an extremely diversified and healthy economy (and minimal energy exposure). Going to McCombs might be a riskier move... but its not like everyone ends up in energy.

FROM Foster Admissions Blog: First Quarter: In the books
First-year student, Lauren Thompson, reflects upon her first quarter as a Foster School student and how she’s found some balance with her other important job: being the proud mother of a 4-year old boy. She chronicles this in her personal blog, LovingMarshall.com, and we’ve reposted it here.

First Quarter: In the books.

Last year, about this time, I attended a workshop on applying for a full-time MBA program. I had to book a babysitter because my husband traveled every other week to the East Coast for his job. As a work-from-home mom that was fairly new to Seattle, I was more anxious about navigating the bus system than going to the workshop itself.

Lauren Thompson.

This year, I’ve just finished my first quarter as an MBA student. My husband took a job that doesn’t travel so that I could (attempt) to balance parenting and go to school full-time. And my bus driver and I are on a first-“Hi! How are you?”-basis.

Last year, about this time, I packed all of Marshall’s lunches. I made most of our family meals. I proudly baked my homemade bread twice a week.

Now, Daniel is the one who makes sure Marshall’s lunches are packed. He does most of the cooking. (I could not have survived this Fall without him.) I am lucky if I bake anything that qualifies as “homemade” more than once a month.

Lauren Thompson.

Last year, about this time, I felt “new.” Most of my conversations were with friends in Austin and Alabama. I was equally in awe of Seattle’s beauty and depressed by its “lights out” at 4:30PM policy.

This year I feel connected. Most of my conversations are with people here in Seattle. My chats with my friends in Austin and Alabama are more positive. And I’m more concerned with understanding the Weighted Average Cost of Capital than worrying about the sun setting in the middle of the afternoon.

Lauren Thompson.

Last year, about this time, I walked Marshall to school every morning and picked him up every afternoon. I worked around his schedule, as I had for 3+ years. It was worth it. This year, I rarely get to take Marshall to school, or pick him up. I usually rush out before he leaves for school with Daniel, and I get home just before dinner. I thought I would feel guilty about this. More than that, I worried that Marshall would feel that I was neglecting him. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Marshall is thriving. He loves that he gets to spend so much time with Daniel. He loves that both he and Mommy are going to school. On nights and weekends, he often sees me studying, and occasionally he gets frustrated when I can’t play with him. More often, though, he curls up beside me and does his own “work.” (Sometimes his chicken scratch makes more sense to me than Accounting.) At the risk of being overly sentimental, my son is proud of me. And I’m proud to show him that women in this country can be mothers and students and career builders and influencers. We don’t have to choose.

Lauren Thompson.

Last year, I made pancakes every weekend, to the delight of my 100 Instagram followers (and my dad).

That hasn’t changed one bit.

Lauren Thompson, MBA ’15, and her son Marshall.

I completed my Application for R2 on 14th November. Got a Video Interview Invite on 25th. Haven't heard from Foster since then. Heart shattering as it feels, but I suppose that's the way it has to be. Chances may be bleak now, but my inner-self is not ready to accept a ding w/o Interview.

Hi, folks. New to this forum, and amazed at how helpful it is!

Okay, this might seem silly at this point, and probably something I should know already. According to the website, every candidate gets invited for a video interview soon after submission. (I had one late-Nov.) I haven't heard from them since. Don't candidates then have a second round of interviews?

Could any of the R1-accepted folks tell me if any of you got in with just the video interview? In other words, can I still assume that I'm under consideration even though I wasn't invited to interview a second time? I'm located in India.

I'm just trying to keep my hopes alive. :)

I think all the admits were interviewed (either in person or via skype). I think there might be some applicants who get wait listed without an interview.

I wouldn't give up hope yet though... small program and they were worrying about R1 decisions not too long ago plus the upcoming holiday season in the US...

I had my interview on campus last week. It was really easy and conversational. My interviewer had no notes in front of him but was well versed in my background. The whole experience solidified my desire to be at Foster next fall. Jan. 15 can't get here soon enough.

Posted from my mobile device

I feel the same way! I interviewed on December 4 and really liked the campus, faculty, and students. Plus this will be the first school I hear back from so let's hope it's good news.

Hi guys,

Just a query. When i log into my Foster admissions dashboard, the deadline shown on the top of the page displays 15th January. I applied for Round 2 15th November Deadline. Just curious to know that do all Round 2 applicants have the date displayed as 15th January?

Got a pleasant surprise in the morning. Invited for the face-to-face interview! :D

I applied in R1 and was waitlisted without interview at the decision deadline (had completed the video interview but not the admissions interview). I sent in an update in the first week of Jan and they have sent an invite now! Have been told to complete the interview by Jan 30th. I guess am being considered for R3 if I'm not mistaken.

Also, can someone else here with an interview invite tell if there is a link to register for the interview? Or do we just mail the concerned person to book a time slot and day? I'd really appreciate your experience on this.

When I recieved my invitation there was a link under the on-campus and Skype section of the e-mail.

Quick question....I'm working on my application for R3. It appears that there is very little to the application itself....do they place a larger emphasis on the resume? I'm wondering because I've refined my resume several times to get it to fit on one page....the version I've been using for MBA apps doesn't have any extracurricular activities or awards. Since they specifically ask for those on their resume prompt, are they expecting multi-page resumes? How many of ya'll went with 2-3 page resumes for the Foster app?

Thanks.
