Hello everyone, this is a question from Kaplan test. I've already read the explanation but still didn't get it clearly:

Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent. In fact, correctly addressed mail takes longer than this only when it is damaged in transit, which is very rare. Overall, however, most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent. If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?

A) A large proportion of the mail that is correctly addressed is damaged in transit.

B) No incorrectly addressed mail arrives within two business days of being sent.

C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly addressed.

D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.

E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between two and three business days after being sent.

I think correct answer is A.
Reason: Since it is already stated in argument that most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent, so this means that the mail is correctly addressed but damaged in transit.

D: Nothing is said in abt incorrect address
E: This must be false as most mails arrives within three business day.

What is OA?

A is out as it is written that damaging is very rare so only possibility is that mails are incorrectly addsd

This is how I diagrammed the question

<=2 ----> arrives withing two business days
>2 ----> arrives longer than two business days
DT = damage in transit
M = mail

Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent.

(1) MCA ---m-----> <=2

In fact, correctly addressed mail takes longer than this only when it is damaged in transit, which is very rare.

(2) MCA and >2 -----> DT

Overall, however, most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent.

(3) M ---> m ----> >2

So the chain that we have is the following

(1) MCA --------> <=2
(2) MCA and >2 -----> DT
(3) M ---> m ----> >2

using that A ----> B equals not B ---> not A you can transform (1) into

(4) not <=2 -----> not MCA meaning if a package arrives three business days or more after being sent, it is not correctly addressed

(5) so >2 -----> not MCA

using (3) and (5) you get

(3) M ---> m ----> >2
(4) >2 -----> not MCA so you can infer that

M ---m----> not MCA that is exactly D

if you want to think about the problem not diagramming it.

Imagine that you have 10 packages to be sent. You know that most of those packages will arrive 3 or more days after being sent. Let's say that 7 of those packages arrive 3 or more days after being sent. What you know is that those packages are not correctly addressed because if they were they would have arrived withing 2 days. Thus most packages are not correctly addressed.

Easy one D. E comes close but it has too many variables -
1) How many envelopes are correctly addressed? Unknown - These take less than 2 days
2) How many envelopes are damaged? Very few - These take more than 2 days.
3) How many envelopes are incorrectly addressed? Lots - These could take any amount of time <2 days 2-3 days or >3 days but a majority take >3 days.

So we don't know how many mails arrive <2 days and how many arrive >2 but < 3 days.

Answer choice D can directly be inferred from Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent(exception of a few damaged ones).
Overall, however, most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent. (These can only be incorrectly addressed ones.)

Thank you all!! Aha, now I can see why D is the only correct answer. At first I chose C because I think that: only incorrectly addressed and damaged in transit mails are late, so most early delivered mails must be correctly addressed. Now I see why it is wrong thinking that way.
As C looks so attractive to me, if possible, can you give me some more ideas or general conception to avoid such wrong answer choices next time?

B) No incorrectly addressed mail arrives within two business days of being sent. Too extreme, the stimulus says nearly all

C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly addressed. it's a premise already stated in the stimulus (1st sentence)

D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed. The correct answer, if most mail arrives in three business days or more, although it is very rare that the mail is damaged in transit, we can conclude from the stimulus a large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed

E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between two and three business days after being sent. Contradict the stimulus which states that most arrive in three business days or more

This question is not really difficult because it was possible to prephrase the correct answer without to read the answers

but damage is very rare.

Yes as given in the question 'Damaged mail is very rare' hence option 'D' has to be the answer.

Ans D).

Diagramming is the key here...The best way, in my opinion, is to diagram these types of questions. The answer choice will almost always be a logical negation of one of the diagramed equations as one poster explained.
