I got a 700 on my first GMAT. I want to apply to Columbia University Scool of Business for my Masters. Should I take the GMAT again?

It can be tough but not impossible. The average score of Columbia Business School is 720+. Your GMAT is decent but it can be tough when compared to the rest of the applicant pool. But it’s just not the numbers game that can convert you to CBS. Please tell more about your profile like your short term goals, long term goals, about your extra curriculum activities, if any participation in NGO’s so that we can guide and help you increase your chances of getting into CBS.

Hi Bobby333345,

I see that your post has been moved to the appropriate thread, so you should get replies from some of the consultants here on GMAT Club. If it turns out that you need to retake the GMAT, feel free to reach back out, and I can provide some advice.

Good luck!

Hi Bobbie:

While I would need to better understand your profile as well as your quant / verbal split, I highly recommend you retake the GMAT.

The average score for the class that entered CBS this past year is 732. More importantly the median score was 700 - 760. This means that only 10% of the class scored below a 700. Schools look at many components of an application aside from the GMAT (goals, desire to attend CBS, past career history, outside activities - just to name a few). It is certainly possible to be admitted with a 700, but the chances are low and you will need to over achieve in every other aspect of your candidacy. Why give CBS a reason to turn you down if you can score higher?

I should also mention that CBS works on a rolling admissions basis so you need to apply earlier rather than later. Thus I recommend you prep and retake the GMAT as soon as possible assuming it is one of your target schools.

The application is a holistic process. My answer above is based on little information about you. If you would like to talk about the GMAT in relation to your overall profile feel free to reach out to me for a free consultation. pamela@jaffeadvantage.com

Is there any specialty for quant or verbal score? I mean-which score is needed separately for getting admission in CBS?
Thanks...

Schools look at the total school as well as the quant / verbal breakdown. The general rule of thumb for M7 schools is that you should be in at least the 80th percentile for both sections of the exam - with the quant being more important. While you do not necessarily need an 80th percentile on both parts of the exam, schools do put more emphasis on the quant score (assuming English is your first language) as it helps them gauge whether a student will be able to do the work (finance, stats, accounting, etc.) A 700 with a 99% percent verbal and a low quant score is not the same as a 700 with a 70% verbal and higher quant score.

However - as with everything - it depends. Schools look at the quantitative score in relation to other indicators (e.g. your grades in quant focused classes in college, your profession, etc.) For example, if you work in finance the quant score is less important than if you work in journalism.

Hello Bobby333345,

Thanks for writing in.

Considering you wish to apply to Columbia, we suggest a GMAT retake. Of course, a 700 is a decent score but the average GMAT score of students applying to Columbia is 720+; having said this, a lot depends on your overall profile as the school will evaluate your profile in a holistic manner. We request you to kindly share the same with us for a more detailed evaluation.

All the best!

What if English is NOT my first language? Actually, my first language is Bengali. I've also knowledge in French! Is French helpful in this regard (instead in highlighted part)?

The verbal is slightly more important if English is not your first language. However the score will be considered in light of other factors (e.g. TOEFL score, whether you have taken courses in English or worked in English, etc.). The quantitative score is important given the type of work expected in the MBA. However a school also wants to ensure international candidates have a level of English to be able to fully partake in all elements of the experience. French is not useful for an English language MBA unless applying to INSEAD which requires a second language (however, it still does not replace the need to perform well in English).

I've completed my bachelor with medium of instructor English. I've also completed 2 online courses on "Principles of Written English", which is designed by University of California Berkeley. I did a online course namely "The United States Department of State on TOEFL Test Preparation: The insider’s guide" with the help of American Center, an annex part of US Embassy in my country.
May I use this online TOEFL course as admission requirement instead of Computer Adaptive TOEFL test for Ivy-league or any other top-notch university?
Thanks for your help!
