Would really appreciate some guidance on what things I can do till next year (apart from getting a great GMAT score) to improve admission chances in Top 20 US MBA schools

What can I do NOW?

1. Still students? Work on your GPA
2. Holiday? Visit campus if possible
3. See how you can improve your profile: Professionally / extracurricular activities
4. Think about recommenders
5. Build your network
5. Research: schools, blogs, scholarships.
6. Prepare for GMAT / GRE

Is it worth going for 1 year MBA programs in US? Are they valued at par with 2 year programs?

In terms of time, cost, learning and opportunity (most-imp)

it really depends. the simple answer is yes, the longer answer is: can you manage to secure a job without an internship?
but if you do get into Kellogg, Cornell Emory or NYU 1Y MBAs, these are all GREAT programs...

you can find a list here of the best 1-year MBA programs: https://www.aringo.com/mba-1y-one-year-programs/

In terms of time, cost, learning and opportunity (most-imp)
.
the ROI is better (cause you pay less, and start working faster) it is all dependant on what you are looking for. naturally, this is less good for career switchers for example...

interesting profile, mediocre GMAT. it will be hard to get into a top 10 US university, but you can get into a top 20 US university or any EU school...

What is the drawbacks with reapplicant ?
schools know you have applied in the past, and will check your past application. they didn’t accept you once, so the first thing they will look for, is "what has changed" if nothing (= same job, the same GMAT), your chances are low. if you manage to improve your GMAT, or get a nice promotion and change some of your story, then schools might favor you, as you seem to really want them (you tired one year, and trying again now)

but again, you have to show progress, and you have to re-write some of the essays...

Harvard is proud of the fact that 10% of their students are reapplicants...

the higher the better.
M7 school averages are 730, and if you come from a super-competitive background, then you really want to score above the school’s averages. naturally, GMAT is just one factor...

GOOD LUCK!

younger in comparison to who?
most top MBA programs average student age is 27-28... in EU, it might be 28-29...
Kind of the same

BUT, don’t worry about this too much. you should count years of experience. average here is 4-6 years of full time experiend. and schools DO NOT LIKE candidates with more than 12 years of experience( 10 starts to be a grey area too)
