Hey
delmoneyyThanks for asking some good questions here! Let's see if I can help out.
I think you have the makings of a profile that is good, albeit a little generic for the MBA applicant pool. You're coming from New York, you work in management consulting, your GMAT is good, not stellar. Depending on where you apply, you're likely competing with Ivy League folks working at MBB as analysts, with 740+ GMATs. Candidly, with a 710 and a 3.5 from a non-Ivy, Stanford and HBS would be extremely challenging for you unless there is something else that really shimmers and shines in your application.
Where you have an opportunity to distinguish yourself is in your: 1) Community service efforts, 2) your leadership of a team at work, and 3) in the execution of your application.
If I were in your shoes, I would find a local volunteer opportunity that you are passionate about (could be Big Brothers Big Sisters), and I would spend a lot of time and energy making a HUGE impact there. Going through the motions isn't going to cut it if you are set on M7/Top 10 schools.
I would also think more deeply about what you want out of an MBA program. I can promise you that the culture at HBS and at Dartmouth Tuck for instance are vastly different and your experience at one will look nothing like the other. Do you want to be in a big city as a part of a big class? Do you want to be more insulated with your class? Do you want case-only teaching style, or are you looking for a mix of Case, Experiential, and Lecture?
One last point about working in the front office for a sports franchise. Take a glance at teamworkonline . com and that will hopefully show you how difficult these roles are to find, nevermind to secure! You will have to find alumni who are willing to bend over backward to help you out. But it can and does happen. I might suggest MIT Sloan as an excellent option for getting into the front office role....
