Verification happens after the deposit and there is an option to delay verification until a certain date if you haven't told your employer yet (I was in the same boat).
Deposit last year was $3500.
If you got an interview, it means you were on-paper qualified. A ding after the interview most likely means something learned from the interview or how you interviewed did not go well, so I wouldn't drive myself crazy over speculations about the GPA/GMAT as the reason for a ding this late in the game.

For those wait listed: there is still hope! I know so many classmates who got in through the wait list, even some who were also extended scholarships!
