A worker carries jugs of liquid soap from a production line to a packing area, carrying 4 jugs per trip. If the jugs are packed into cartons that hold 7 jugs each, how many jugs are needed to fill the last partially filled carton after the worker has made 17 trips?

A. 1
B. 2
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

Good questionn. A miss in the reading and anyone could end up making the mistake that I made. this question is not tricky in calculation or logic but in paying attention to detail. We need to keep in mind that the question is asking how many jugs are needed to fill the last partially filled carton. meaning thereby that it is not asking for the remainder after 68 has been divided by 7, but how many jugs will be needed to complete another carton.

After 17 trips, the worker has carried 17 x 4 = 68 jugs.

From those 68 jugs, 68/7 = 9 cartons have been filled, with 5 extra jugs remaining. So, the worker needs one more trip to carry 2 more jugs to fill the partially filled carton with those 2 jugs.

Hi All,

We're told that a worker carries 4 jugs of liquid soap per trip and that the jugs are packed into cartons that hold 7 jugs each. We're asked for the number of jugs needed to fill the last PARTIALLY-filled carton after the worker has made 17 trips.

With those first 17 trips, the worker would have transported (4)(17) = 68 jugs of soap.

Since each carton holds 7 jugs, those 68 jugs would lead to 9 FULL cartons (totaling 63 jugs) and a 10th carton that has 5 jugs in it. Thus, 2 more jugs would be needed to fill that final carton.

Since the worker, carried jugs of liquid soap(4 jugs/trip)
In 17 trips, he would carry 68 jugs of liquid soap.

Since he can fill 7 jugs in a carton, he will need to add 2 more jugs
such that he has 70 jugs and he can fill the jugs in 10 cartons.

Hence he needs 2 jugs(Option B) such that the last partially filled carton is full.

Hi Phdstanford73,

While this question does include some of the usual 'clues' you would look for to TEST THE ANSWERS, the question actually involves two variables (how 'full' is the final box' AND how many additional jugs are needed to fill that last box). Since you have to deal with 2 variables to answer the question (and not just one), this is NOT a question that you would use TEST THE ANSWERS on.

A. 1
B. 2
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

Did you see the remainder question hiding in this question?

If the worker carries 4 jugs per trip and makes a total of 17 trips, then the total number of jugs carried = (4)(17) = 68 jugs
Each carton holds 7 jugs.

68 ÷ 7 = 9 R5
That is, 63 jugs can be placed in 9 cartons (holding 7 jugs each), and we have 5 jugs remaining.

How many jugs are needed to fill the last partially filled carton?
If we have 5 jugs remaining, and each carton holds 7 jugs, then we need 2 more jugs to fill the last carton

A. 1
B. 2
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

Let's start by defining some ratios:
(1) # of jugs per trip = 4 jugs/ 1 trip
(2) # of jugs per parton = 7 jugs / 1 carton

Now let's combine our two ratios by multiplying 4 jugs / 1 trip X 1 carton / 7 jugs which is equal to 4 cartons / 7 trips. So now lets determine how many cartons we'll fill in 17 trips which can be done with our combined ratio, so 17 trips X 4 cartons/ 7 trips = 17(4)/7 cartons which is equal to 9 and 5/7, which means we'll need 2 more jugs to fill up the final carton (i.e. 7 - remainder of 5).

total trips made by worker 17 and in each trip 4 jugs are carried ; 17*4 ; 68
Packing is done of 7 jugs per carton
so we are 2 short of multiple of 7 i.e. 70
option B ; 2

4 jugs per trip
Total trip=17
Jugs for 17 trip=4*17=68,
Each Cartoon hold 7 jugs, So 7*9=63 that means 9 cartoon is fully filled and the rest 5 jugs (68-63) can fill up a cartoon partially. More 2 jugs are needed to fulfill the last cartoon.
Hope it helps!

Correct Option : B
In 17 Trips with 4 Jugs = 68 Jugs
Carton Size : 7
Remaining : 68/7 = 9 with reminder 5, to complete one full carton 7 is needed, so 7-5 =2 Jugs
