Wharton Class of 2024 Profile: A comprehensive look

Although there was a 13.9% decrease in applications for the full-time MBA program at Wharton for the class of 2024, the business school still achieved gender parity and kept its record average GMAT score for the second year.

Wharton released its 2024 MBA Class Profile, which largely upheld the impressive advancements from the prior profile as it emerged from the pandemic's unstable ground.

For the class of 2024, there were 6,319 applications this year, which is a decrease of over 1,000 from 2021, when Wharton received 7,338. Since 5,905 potential MBA candidates applied in 2019 (the Class of 2021), there have been fewer applications. 877 students were enrolled at Wharton, 20 fewer than the previous year.

Wharton, renowned for its strength in finance, is a member of the prestigious M7 business schools, an informal alliance of the world's top private business schools well-known for their stringent admissions standards.

The benefits can be enormous for those who get accepted into Wharton. Three years after graduation, Wharton MBA graduates can anticipate a salary of more than $211,000 per year.

An Overview Of Wharton School of Business

The University of Pennsylvania's private Ivy League research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has a business school called the Wharton School. The Wharton School, the world's oldest collegiate business school and generally regarded as one of the most prestigious business schools in the world was founded in 1881 through a donation from Joseph Wharton.

At the undergraduate level, the Wharton School confers Bachelor of Science degrees with a focus on economics specific to the school and Bachelor of Arts degrees with concentrations in core management, general business, and international studies. The Master of Business Administration program offers joint degrees from other universities at the graduate level through dual studies (e.g., law, engineering, government).

WHARTON MBA CLASS 2024

Students at Wharton, who come from all walks of life and all parts of the world, help to shape the community there.

The Lauder MBA/MA Joint Degree in International Studies, the Carey JD/MBA program, and the MBA in Health Care Management are the three fully integrated, interdisciplinary programs offered by the Wharton MBA.

The school received a 14 percent decrease in applications (6,319) and 877 applicants compared to last year. The new class has a 50/50 gender split, maintaining the class' gender parity. Other statistics demonstrate that Wharton is holding steady in the wake of Covid by mirroring or remaining within single digits of the profile from last year. 

First-generation students make up 11% of the incoming MBA. The humanities made up 34% of undergraduate majors, STEM made up 34%, and business made up 32%. In contrast, the incoming class of 2023 had 27% business, 33% STEM, and 39% humanities.

 WORK EXPERIENCE

The average work experience of incoming MBAs is five years, the same as that of the previous class, however, whereas the previous class's range of work experience was between 1 and 14 years.

27% of the class have consulting backgrounds (down from 28% in the previous class), followed by 12% (up from 10%) for tech and 11% (up from 10%) for nonprofit and government backgrounds. Backgrounds in investment banking, which were the second-largest group in 2021 with 14% of the total, decreased to just 8% this year, making them the sixth-largest work category for the year.

WHARTON MBA 2024 ENROLLMENT

50 percent of the MBA class of 2024 are female. With 52% women as of last year, Wharton achieved gender parity for the first time.

In 2020, schools had trouble attracting international students, but Wharton seems to be holding steady after Covid. 35 percent of the new crew are foreigners, representing 77 different nations. This is comparable to the class of 2023's 36%. The percentage of international students in the 2020 matriculating class of 2022 was only 19%.

35 percent of the class comprises US minority students, of whom 23 percent identify as Asian Americans, 7 percent as Black or African Americans, and 5 percent as Hispanic or Latinx. This year, 8% of students self-identify as LGBTQ+, up 1% from the previous record-breaking year.
