Estimate, you don't need to divide here to get the answer:

12X<=600 --> X<=50, But we rounded up, so the real number must be <50 --> 49 (C)

A club collected exactly $599 from its members. If each member contributed at least $12, what is the greatest number of members the club could have?

(A) 43
(B) 44
(C) 49
(D) 50
(E) 51

Let's first divide= 599 by 12 (the minimum amount each member could contribute) and then use the remainder to finish the problem.

599/12 = 49 R 11

This means that: 49 people x $12 + 1 person x $11 = $599

We see that if 49 members each contribute $12, someone would have to contribute the extra $11. Note that, since each member contributed at least $12, the $11 could not have come from an additional member. Therefore, the extra $11 must have been contributed by one (or more) of the existing 49 members. Regardless of who contributed the extra $11, the maximum number of members the club could have is 49.

Answer is C.

Though I got the answer right but I wanted to understand the statement in the problem. When questions each member contributed at least 12$ then how come one member could contribute 11 dollar?

(A) 43
(B) 44
(C) 49
(D) 50
(E) 51

12 * 50 = 600

But we find the total contribution is < 600

So, the Maximum possible value of the no of members will be something less than 50 , in this case and going through the options only (C) seems plausible, Hence Answer must be (C)

Since 599/12 = 49 R 11, the greatest number of members in the club is 49 (notice that there can’t be an extra member who contributes (the remainder) $11; the $11 dollars must be contributed from one or more of the 49 members) .

The average member=\(\frac{$599}{$12}=49.92\) (remember: number of people has to be integer). The question says: each member contributed at least $12. So, the contribution could be more than $12. If the contribution (per head) is $599, then the member (lowest) will be 1. So, the greatest member will be 49 (excluding fraction).
So, the correct choice is Thanks__
