An automobile's gasoline mileage varies, depending on the speed of the automobile, between 18.0 and 22.4 miles per gallon, inclusive. What is the maximum distance, in miles, that the automobile could be driven on 15 gallons of gasoline?

(A) 336
(B) 320
(C) 303
(D) 284
(E) 270

The max mileage = 22.4, so max distance can be traveled = 22.4*15 = 224 + 112 = 336 - Option A)

Since the maximum distance can be travelled when the mileage is maximum, we can take 22.4miles per gallon as our mileage in order to achieve maximum distance per mile, d.
Here, since the no. of gallons is 15, maximum distance = 22.4 * 15 = 336 miles.

Distance will be maximum when the mileage will be maximum.

Since, 1 gallon of gasoline can travel 22.4 miles,

Therefore, 15 gallons of gasoline will travel 22.4*15= 336

An automobile's gasoline mileage varies, depending on the speed of the automobile, between 18.0 and 22.4 miles per gallon, inclusive. What is the maximum distance, in miles, that the automobile could be driven on 15 gallons of gasoline?

(A) 336
(B) 320
(C) 303
(D) 284
(E) 270

To find the maximum distance, we should use maximum mileage per gallon. Thus, the maximum distance would be (22.4 miles per gallon) * (15 gallons) = 336 miles.

This might seem silly, but I got this one wrong, and I believe it was because of the "inclusive" that followed "between 18.0 and 22.4 miles per gallon". I saw that and thought variable speed, so variable distances. Could you speak to what purpose the word "inclusive" serves, so I can be sure not to trip on the language.

Thanks.

The highlighted part above means that the speed of the car be as follows..

18.00 ( Min) , 18.01 , 18.02 , 18.03..............22.38 , 22.39 , 22.40( Max )

Quote:
Maximum Distance will be travelled at Maximum Speed

So Distance Travelled is -

\(\frac{22.4 \ miles}{Gallon}* 15 \ gallons\) = 336 miles

Hence Answer will be (A)

PS : Feel free to revert in case of any doubt , I will be more than happy to reply to your query

Miles/ Gallon is a ratio

22.4 miles per 1 gallon * 15 gallons = 22.4*15 = 360
18 miles per 1 gallon *15 gallons = 270

I prefer to estimate in question where option values aren't close to each other
Max mileage is 22.4
22.4 miles per 1 gallon * 15 gallons = (20+2.4)*15 = 300 + more than 30 = More than 330
Only A is more than 30
