Hi,

I am considering applying to the Chicago Business Fellows program for 2019. Unfortunately, there are very few profiles for the CBF program, so I'm not sure at all, if I will get in. What do you believe are my chances?

Citizenship: US

Diversity:
- Ethnicity: Indian
- Gender: Male
- Location: California
- Sexuality: LGBT

Academics:
- State University - Top 75 on USNWR National University Rankings (LOL)
- Doctorate in STEM
- GPA: 3.7+ (summa cum laude)
- GMAT: 710

Previous experience:
- Biopharma strategy consulting x 2 yrs (1 year international)
- Small unheard of foreign company (about 40-50 people)
- Manage 5+ people
- Promoted twice
- 2 Biopharmaceutical company internships (1 was a full year part-time while in school, another was full time during the summer)
- 1 Health insurance company internship (full time during the summer)
- 1 Prestigious venture capital firm in Manhattan internship (2 months during summer of breaking through to the elites haha - think old money mega rich family that is a household name's VC firm. They usually take an intern at a HSW MBA program each year)

Leadership:
- Student government president (School not University - School was about 1400 students, 25 student orgs, and a few different degree programs)
- Various minor student organisation E-board / Chair positions

Why I want to go to Booth?
- Increasingly involved in management and finance related projects (lack the current foundations in this)
- Will be expected to contribute on the leadership team for my company within the next 2 years and I need to build my skills for this
- To reconsider VC - I received positive feedback from my VC internship and even 2 years later we still keep in touch. However, it was made clear to me that they only recruit from top MBA programs and at the time I lacked the finance background, but wanted my experience / education in biopharma to understand some Biotech Start Ups they were working with
- I was the first with my particular background to get the internship and since they've rotated another person with a similar background to me, but still have only hired their occasional MBA interns
- My ultimate career goal has been to start-up a biotech - the network, education, and career advancement from Booth would be largely beneficial for this

Hi, thanks for your time!
Please evaluate my profile:

Background and nationality : Russian male, 29; First generation (in family) college graduate.

Undergrad Information : started Math and IT degree in home city, after 3 years decided to change my life and moved to Finland to study Industrial management ( bachelor of engineering )

GMAT: 740 q49 v41

Work experience and leadership: 5 years, Consulting with Pwc and DuPont; PE/family office and consulting with boutique; now Business development in international mining company. Current position: Senior analyst.
Managed up to 10 (as a part of projects).

Community and others: unfortunately not much. When I studied in Finland I made a trip to hometown to visit 6 high schools to inform pupils about opportunities to study for free abroad ( made presentation and video with interviews of current students )

Post MBA goals :
Tech or consulting (maybe entrepreneurship )

Anything else:
I have very poor GPA ( about 2.6 - hard to calculate because of Finnish grading system )
Reason: I had to pay for my living in Finland myself , so I worked as a morning postman (from 2 am till 6 am 6 days a week)

Please evaluate my profile below!

Background and nationality: Male, White, US citizen, 25 years old.

Undergrad Information: BBA in finance from Ohio State 3.2 GPA ( I had one bad semester where I dealt with depression from the death of my best friend, dragging down my gpa. I plan to use the optional essay to explain this).

GMAT: 730 (Q 47, V 44, IR 6, AWA 6)

Work experience and leadership: At the time of applying, will be 5 years working as a financial analyst for major bank with one promotion to intermediate analyst. In charge of a team of analysts based in India, led many projects, and have mentored some of the associates on my team.

Community and others: Done many different volunteering activities but not through only one organization. Currently part of a mentoring program through Ohio State. Serving on the board of a non-profit Irish heritage organization (Even though I'm not Irish).

Post MBA goals: Wanting to either switch to investment banking or consulting.

Background and nationality: Currently working as a financial controller in NYC for a F500. I worked for a Big4 accounting firm for 3 years as an auditor in Chicago and San Francisco before taking the controller job here in NY. Nationality: From Nepal

Undergrad Information: Graduated in 2014 from a college in Chicago- 3.5 GPA in accounting (took over 150 credits/40 classes) while in 4-year undergrad program.

GMAT: I haven't taken GMAT but took GRE instead as I was looking into PhD and Masters in Finance programs. GRE Score- 165 in Quant and 159 in Verbal.

Work experience and leadership: 60 months; oversaw auditing projects, guided interns and first years thru audit projects, led corporate reporting changes for a Fortune 500 company;

Campus leadership: President of two different clubs in college

Community and others: Helped with earthquake relief efforts in Nepal

Hi Everyone,
Below is my profile to date. I am presently scheduled to take the GMAT again on 12/10 (so a bit of time to improve my score)

Age: 31, American, low-income background
Undergrad: Double major/double minor (History of Math & Science, Western Philosophy/Classics & Comparative Lit)
Small but well regarded Liberal Arts school
Grad Masters in Teaching (Regional college)
GPA: 3.7 for both
Work: 9 years work experience, with clear progression in scope. Accepted into Teach for America, taught middle and high school. Joined non-profit/research project at UChicago (another department, but used to go to the Booth cafeteria all the time!) in coordination with Chicago Public Schools to identify risks and solve them real time for students. Started LLC and provided consulting services. Recently joined another ed non-profit org. Have had several promotions and managed a team of 4.
Goal: Long term to transition into corporate philanthropy, specifically a program like the GE Foundation or BMO Harris (as both have strong education connections). Short-term is to consult (Deloitte, etc.) to gain corporate experience.
Extracurriculars: Member of several community groups (neighborhood preservation group, committee on niche education issue, direct support for community center), active in education lobby organization, have run (both successfully and unsuccessfully) for local office, run half-marathons
GMAT: In the prep process. Current highest score is a 680 with a goal of 720.

Hi, I'm aiming for top B schools including Booth.

Age 31, Male, Indian

Did LLB alongwith job from Delhi University (evening classes), 54%
GMAT 650 (Q 49, V 31, IR 8)

Have 9+ years of work ex in India's largest power equipment manufacturer and top 7 Public sector undertakings.

Started as Project engineer at thermal sites and then moved to HR, Business Administration and law.
Currently leading 3 different teams in HR, CSR and Business Administration and memeber of legal team.

Saved approx. $500,000 for the company in an arbitration (changing arguments and strategy).

In business administration, saved
Rs $50000 a year by using idle machinery from other units instead of hiring it.

Implemented online stores and helpdesks, thereby reducing manpower requirements by 70%.

Negotiated and took 50% discount on existing connections (negotiated with senior management including CMD of Telcom). Also have managed many indistrial disputes saving 500+ man-hours combined.

I'm also a certified behavioural trainer in my company and have trained 200+ employees.


Consistent top performer and can get LORs from seniors, Head of HR and Executive Director.
Although dont have international workex, but have travelled a lot in India (demographically different) for business.

Extra curriculars include: have represented company in all india psu football tournaments, have won table tennis tournament in law college.
Participated in street plays on social issues in company.
Avid biker, trekker.

I know my experience is on higher side and have low GMAT score, still what do you think of my chances.

Yours is a mixed bag.
Let us start with the not so good- Academic performance is below average for most Top US B Schools. The only way you might have compensated that is through a high GMAT, but unfortunately, that is low too, especially considering your Indian background (large pool of competitive applicants- one is expected to score high to stand out in this crowd)
The good- Work experience looks good because you are already talking about 'impact' in your post. How you saved money for your organization. This is the right way to start looking at your work. Also talk about your career progression. Extracurricular could work in your favor too, provided you showcase impact and your personal contribution in a similar way. 9 Years, though high, should not be a major problem at some schools.
That actually brings us to the last point- which is missing in your profile. What are your career goals my friend and why an MBA now. By itself 9 years of experience seems slightly high for the schools. but if your overarching narrative makes it clear why you want to pursue and MBA and now, then the years will not be a problem. Of course, be prepared to showcase more maturity and progress in your career than the average applicant.
From here you have two options- you either retake the GMAT and apply next year (considering that R2 deadlines are close and you may not be able to take the GMAT much before that) or re-look at your list of schools.

Hi. Would love to get any advice or color on potential admission to Booth

Background and nationality: hong kong male 29 years

Undergrad Information: 3.3/4.0 GPA at one of top 3 local schools majoring in economics

GMAT: 720

Work experience and leadership: Im worling as a macro sales and trader at one of the top 3 bb banks (gs,jpm, ms in hong kong) with approx. 2 years of experience
- On the sales side, we do a bunch of pitching for relatively new products like structured credit and covered bonds

Community and others: Ive participated in a mentorship program working with kids of disabled parents
+Big big fan of soccer. Have been part of same soccer club for past 6 yrs

Post MBA goals: macro research or macro hedge fund (potentially in US or EUR)

*My graduate rotation experience Aditya Birla was sort of internal consultancy experience as each rotation would start with a problem statement for a given sector/business unit, and involve problem diagnosis, creating and deploying solutions. While each rotation (or project) differed in complexity and area of concern, they all were strategic and of high impact in nature. Also got an opportunity to work on a global assignment in the US.
*Entrepreneurship: I always had entrepreneurial bug, so when an opportunity to join the startup in space of fashion accessories came up (as Co-founder) 2 years ago, I immediately made the jump. For the last two years, I have dabbled across operations and marketing. Hi All,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to evaluate my profile for the MBA program at Booth

Nationality: Indian
Age: 28
Undergraduate Qualification: Graduated from a top 10 undergraduate business program (US News) with the highest distinction and top of my class (GPA:3.98)
GMAT: 720

Work experience:
1. Out of College, worked in Management Consulting at Deloitte S&O in Chicago. Got the H1B visa, however had to resign and come back to India due to personal reasons. As an analyst, I create a niche for myself by working on high burn PE projects and till date will get amazing recommendations from very senior partners at the firm.

2. Moved to India and joined my dad in the family business (luxury retail brand) - Took over complete ops and responsibility in 3 years. In total 5 years in the business, grew the company from 4 stores to 65 stores in the Indian sub-continent and increasing revenue from $3.5M to $19.7M. As planned for last 5 years, took an exit from the business by selling the company to a strategic buyer $64M.

Extracurricular: While in college, represented the school and won various case competitions across the world (CBS Copenhagen, Auckland, Annual Wharton Case). Volunteer with Teach for India part time and have initiated lot of CSR programs at my company. Also a very passionate and semi-pro poker player.

As to the important question of why do I want a MBA now: Even though I worked only 1 year in consulting in the USA, I really the lifestyle and would like to move back to the states. Additionally, I'd like to go back into Management consulting (MBB) or Boutique PE buy side, not for the money but for the passion I have for those kind of projects.


References: Will be able to get strong references from people partners in consulting.

Please give me your honest opinion regarding admission? Is my GMAT a bit low? Can people be surprised as the the reason for doing an MBA after a successful exit?

While your profile looks solid in terms of work ex (successful entrepreneurship, strong past academic scores), the GMAT is a slight worry considering the Indian Male background. While 720 will not be a deal breaker in your specific case, a 740+ could put you in a good space.

Hi All,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to evaluate my profile for the MBA program at Booth

Nationality: Indian
Age: 28
Undergraduate Qualification: Graduated from a top 10 undergraduate business program (US News) with the highest distinction and top of my class (GPA:3.98)
GMAT: 720

Work experience:
1. Out of College, worked in Management Consulting at Deloitte S&O in Chicago. Got the H1B visa, however had to resign and come back to India due to personal reasons. As an analyst, I create a niche for myself by working on high burn PE projects and till date will get amazing recommendations from very senior partners at the firm.

2. Moved to India and joined my dad in the family business (luxury retail brand) - Took over complete ops and responsibility in 3 years. In total 5 years in the business, grew the company from 4 stores to 65 stores in the Indian sub-continent and increasing revenue from $3.5M to $19.7M. As planned for last 5 years, took an exit from the business by selling the company to a strategic buyer $64M.

Extracurricular: While in college, represented the school and won various case competitions across the world (CBS Copenhagen, Auckland, Annual Wharton Case). Volunteer with Teach for India part time and have initiated lot of CSR programs at my company. Also a very passionate and semi-pro poker player.

As to the important question of why do I want a MBA now: Even though I worked only 1 year in consulting in the USA, I really the lifestyle and would like to move back to the states. Additionally, I'd like to go back into Management consulting (MBB) or Boutique PE buy side, not for the money but for the passion I have for those kind of projects.


References: Will be able to get strong references from people partners in consulting.

Please give me your honest opinion regarding admission? Is my GMAT a bit low? Can people be surprised as the the reason for doing an MBA after a successful exit?

Would appreciate a profile evaluation. Targeting R1 next year.

Background and nationality: Indian Female

Undergrad Information: B.Tech - ECE. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University(MSIT). CGPA: 8.9(one of the toppers of my stream)

GMAT: 760

Work experience and leadership : 4.5 years at present in a techno-functional role. Working as a Senior Software Engineer in Infosys Ltd serving domestic and international banks. Have worked with private, public sector and international banks, all at client site. Currently heading all clients in Africa and Sri Lanka region (about 2 years of international work ex). Regarded as a domain expert and have worked as a team lead in multiple project implementations.

Awards: Top Performer in the Entry Level Training, Most Promising Joinee Award, Listed as Infosys Pride Factor, Awarded by multiple clients for contribution to the project.
Was the head of Self-Governance Team in Infosys for a year.

Hi everyone, I appreciate that you are willing to take out time to review my chances at Booth, thank you!

I've applied in R2 and my profile is as follows :)

Age: 25
Gender: Female
Nationality: Indian
GMAT: 700 and then 730 (improved score in 2 months)
Undergrad: Bachelor of Business studies from Delhi University
Undergraduate GPA: not sure of the conversion but got a First division - 73%
Have taken 2 courses with a A grade at Harvard Summer School during college

Current work ex: 3.5 Years
Work in straetgy consulting at a Big 4 in Dubai. Worked on projects across the Middle East.. promoted to senior consultant.
Headed teams just one year in.

Extra Curriculars:
- Volunteer 20hrs + per week as Marketing and Communications Manager, Middle East for a non-profit based out of Chicago. Have had a quantifiable impact on the total outreach and funds raised at annual event.
- Have held multiple leadership positions in college and school. Organised a national level event. Volunteered with NGOs extensively in college also
- Represented the country internationally in an individual sport. Won national tournaments also (this was in school though)

Short term goal: Pivot from for profit consulting to social impact consulting.

What are my chances?

Score: 740, only taken it once

Extracurriculars in College: Board of Camp Kesem (501c3 Camp for kids), Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, National Honor Society

Extracurriculars Post grad: Literacy mentor for Chicago Public Schools, High School mentor for Chicago Public Schools, On professional board of local animal welfare society, work in low income areas to provide education and services for animal welfare

Work experience: Started right out of college at a Fortune 500 company in an analyst role working in the healthcare sector, promoted to manager level after 9 months (usually 3 to 4 year progression). Served 1 year in the manager role before moving into a senior manager role at a small Virtual Reality Tech company. Advanced enterprise adoption and built widely adopted blueprint - promoted after 8 months to Senior Team Lead role with a team reporting to me, where I'm currently sitting.

Goals for MBA are to broaden my knowledge of public policy and work in a role to bridge the gap between public opinion and large corporate initiatives to find the sweet spot between policy that is beneficial to the company from a financial and public opinion perspective.

Aiming for top schools including Harvard, Yale, Booth. Ideally would like to go for a dual MBA/MPP.

Hello team,

Could you please help in reviewing my profile if I would like to apply to Chicago Booth School of Business for a full time MBA program.

24 Year old Indian Male.

My GMAT Score is 740(QA50, VA40,IR 8,AWA pending). I had already given the GMAT twice prior to this score in which I scored 650 which I cancelled. I scored 710 on the second instance with full marks in IR and AWA( QA 50,VA36,IR 8,AWA 6). Please advise.

Educational Qualifications:
Class X: 09.40 CGPA(All subjects)
Class XII: 93%(All Subjects)
B. Com(H) from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata with first division marks(72%)
Chartered Accountant(Nov’16 batch)
Passed 2 levels of the International CFA Program(US)

Work experience:
CA Articleship(3 Years):
My key responsibilities included carrying out statutory and internal audit for clients. I’ve also assisted the firms I have worked for in income tax and companies returning filing as well as accounting work.

Goldman Sachs(April 2017-Present)
Division: Product Control
-> First line of control on the Securities Division of the firm.
-> Daily and weekly financial P&L Reporting and analysis for the Japanese equity derivatives desk.
-> Carrying out price verification procedures in order to ensure the firm’s marks are consistent with the consensus marks.
-> Safeguarding the assets of the firm as well as substantiating P&L drivers to help explain VaR breaches.

I would like to start my MBA by latest 2020.

Goals post MBA:

Seeking to pave my way into IB/Trading.

Hi Dhruv,

Thanks for sharing your profile, and congrats on the GMAT improvement. On paper, you've got the components of a strong application to Booth. Execution of the application itself will make all the difference though, to demonstrate your strong interest in Booth and show what you'll bring to the class. Strengths I see are your GMAT, CA, Goldman brand, and it sounds like a bit of overseas exposure at work too. Weaknesses that I see are extracurricular activities (I saw your post on the Stern forum with my colleague Nisha, and think this is still an area you could improve). Also, if a promotion at work is not possible before you apply, make sure you have several examples of leadership (doesn't have to be leading people, can be leading projects, etc.) and results you can show of how you made a difference at work. Otherwise, you should plan to engage with Booth -- check out their website for all opportunities to connect as a prospective student -- so when the time comes to apply, you can show why Booth is a great fit for you.
