I didn’t get an email from them alerting me to a change, but I checked the portal and got a waitlist message. Send them an email.

Last year they had released me by June 1st or so.
I am in international, so that may have played some role in it - but not sure.

I think Rice is much straightforward on this front. But I'd guess that by next month we would have a clearer picture.

Should I send an update to the school?

I have been promoted this week at my company. In fact the promotion came 3 years early than usual time based on my performance and leadership ability. Have been assigned more responsibility and a team that reports me now has increased from 30 to 65+.

According to admissions, you most certainly should make them aware of your change in status. Without question, it can only help, not hurt.

YOU MUST.
You see, it is a great achievement. So, I am sure, the AdCom would see it that way.
Put it in a way that you got that promotion for your work ethics and qualities. At the same time don't brag. And add the fact that you are still interested in joining Rice, as you were when you applied and intend to join.
Unless you have any other school as your priority, I would say, let them know.

Rice is my foremost choice because of my Oil Gas background. In fact, it is one of the few schools I applied at and would be overwhelmed if I get off the waitlist. Wont waste a second in submitting the deposit if that happens :)

Yes I agree wholeheartedly. You should let the school know asap. I don't think a whole lot of seats are left so the earlier you tell them the better it would be.
