Guys,
I am working with a consultant and when I told him that I wanted to write about moving to a new country as a young teenager and had to overcome language and cultural barriers, to show my ability to face challenges, he said that the idea is banal.
What do you guys think? Sure, I have not conquered cancer or poverty, but I am not trying to compete with who has overcome the greatest obstacles. I am telling a story about my life, and that was one of the first significant challenges.
What do you guys think about this? I think hundreds of people will be writing about some kinds of nonprofit, charity, giving back - so nothing is extremely original anyways.
Thanks for the input guys.
The GSB essay is due soon so any insight would be great!
Partly agree.
People have gotten into Stanford with essays that talk about their dog.
It's not really so much about the content as much as the message about you within it…a message that allows us to learn about you on a deep level (your values.)
Take an example of this where there was some deciding moment, some inflection point that changed you forever and has informed your life work and mission since then.

I had a quick question regarding the "Employment" section of the Stanford GSB Application and would appreciate any thoughts. If I had an internship that paid an hourly rate, should I annualize the figure or just list the hourly rate and assume they will know? HBS explicitly stated to list the hourly number but GSB does no such thing, so any clarification would be great.

Thanks in advance!
I am torn and looks like the exact same discussion took place 3 years ago: https://gmatclub.com/forum/calling-all- ... 7-100.html It looks like people have done it both ways. However, the person who got in, he/she annualized it _________________

Last week at the application Q&A, they said to annualize every compensation.

Hey all, for the essay on "Why Stanford", obviously this is a careers goals essay combined with how specifically Stanford fits in to that. Do we need to elaborate on the "why" behind your goal? For instance if your long-term goal was to launch a startup that helped people to do XYZ, should you elaborate on why you want to help people to do XYZ? Or would that be something that you would cover more if you got to an interview?

I think "why" behind your career goal can be shown in the first essay, "what matters most to you and why?", at least this is how I did it. As for your interview, your interviewer would only see your CV and he/she may ask you about your future career goals and why you pursue them, but this is not guaranteed as they may focus on why you did your degree/joined your current company/did certain EC's.

Thanks for the input! Think I will have to take a different approach on mine, but now I'm realising how few words 400 is to fit in your goals and particulars about Stanford. I feel like I could write pages upon pages!

I have four different versions of this mini-essay... :D
Tell us about a time within the last two years when your background influenced your participation at work or school. (1,200 characters)
A "background" can be interpreted in so many different ways! Not sure how you all handled it, but this is the one element that is keeping me from pressing submit :/

I have had clients accepted who were over the total count by less than 10%. They will not run actual word counts on the documents -- they can eyeball it and know if it's about right across the two essays. Make sure you PDF your document as well. Best of luck!

Does anyone know how strict Stanford is with word count on the essays? I'm 6% over the limit right now.
My admissions consultant said +/- 10% is fine, but can anyone confirm?

Perfect, thank you! Good to know that's not a deal breaker. I'm going to submit tonight and hope for the best.
