Hi JKL2012,

A 760 is an outstanding score for a first practice CAT - and it certainly implies that you're a strong critical thinker and Test-taker. I have a few questions about that CAT though and about your overall timeline/goals:

1) How long have you studied?
2) What materials have you used?
3) Did you take the FULL CAT (with the Essay and IR sections)?
4) Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE you took that CAT?
5) Have you taken any other CATs besides that one? And how did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

6) What is your goal score?
7) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
8) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Thanks for your reply!

1) I studied for about 2 weeks prior to taking GMAT Prep 1.
2) OG for 2017, with supplements. Also, based on SC being weak in initial CAT, I have started studying manhattan SC book.
3) I skipped AWA, did IR and got 8.0
4) I had not previously seen any of the CAT
5) I have not taken any other CATs, besides the ones listed above. I plan on taking the full GMAT prep 2 later today (including AWA).
6) I would like to get a 750 or better.
7) I am scheduled to take the GMAT on 17SEP, but am thinking about rescheduling it for later if I feel unprepared.
8) Applying to B-schools to matriculate in the fall of 2018.

Hi JKL2012,

You should post back here after you've taken your next CAT. At your scoring level, you don't have any big 'weak areas', so any missing points that you could pick up will likely be in 'nitpick' categories - rarer variations of question types, subtler Verbal prompts (inference questions, etc.). Unfortunately, at this level the GMAT becomes really 'sensitive' to little mistakes - just a handful can significantly impact your score, so the 'precision' in your work becomes an even bigger factor. When reviewing each CAT, it's important to define WHY you got questions wrong. It's one thing if the question was just too hard, but it's another thing if the question was 'gettable' (but you made a small mistake).

RichC,

Thanks for your response.
I've studied an additional 2 weeks since GMATPrep1.
Took GMATPrep2 CAT today simulating as close to possible the testing environment (break times....etc).

Results:

Q49: 30/37. Five of seven wrong were due to silly mistakes (i.e. adding when there was clearly a multiplication sign, solving 2^4=8, and my personal favorite solving a very complex problem and forgetting to do the last step..solving for x instead of (x)*(sqrt(2)).
V42: 35/41. 5/6 wrong were SC(known weakness), other wrong question misreading question on RC.
IR8: 10/12.

Overall: Q49,V42, IR8, 750

Last CAT I took I got 10 questions wrong on Quant and got a 50Q, and 9 questions wrong on Verbal and got a 42V.

Is there a best strategy for avoiding silly mistakes, besides repetition and practice? I'm scheduled to take the actual GMAT in two weeks and would like to get at least a 750 but obviously as high as possible.

Hi JKL2012,

This second CAT result shows that you clearly have the necessary skills to hit your goals. From your review though, you recognize that you missed too many questions that you 'should' have gotten correct. The easiest way to eliminate those types of little mistakes is to take more/better notes. Demand that level of commitment from yourself. On a fundamental level, the silliest mistakes that you will ever make on this Test will occur when you don't take the proper notes, so you have to choose to do the work and not allow those mistakes to happen.
