Is 700 good enough ?

Question

Hi All

I recently gave GMAT and got a 700 (47 Quant and 39 Verbal). I am a Petroleum Engineer (Reservoir) in Houston, TX with about 8.5 years of experience in total; spread across big oil & gas companies in the US and a consulting company in India. Post full-time MBA, I am looking to venture into Energy Investment Banking or stay with an Oil & Gas operator, but in a different role. My target schools are Rice University (Jones Graduale School of Business), Univ. of Texas, Austin (McCombs) and Cornell (Johnson). I will also try my luck at some other top schools, but feel that, I have less than avg. score and fall on the right side of the curve as far as avg. age is concerned. Keeping all these factors in mind, is 700 good enough or should I retake the GMAT ?

PS: I am an Indian citizen with US green card

Although I am not the expert.... but in my personal experience ..... Your score is right at the median ( and more ) ballpark range of the schools you have listed. And I would now consider at the application part.

PS: Donot worry much about the age thing ..... you are not in the 'too old' bucket yet.

Hi, It's a good score not only for your target schools but you can also apply to other TOP 20 ranked B-schools. If you submit strong essays and recommendations, it more than sufficient score.

8.5 years of experience with 700 in GMAT is perfectly fine for those specific Business School, I guess!

Hi Kush,

First off, a 700/Q47 is an outstanding score, so you can comfortably apply to any Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is probably not necessary. That having been said, with highly-competitive Programs, you need to make sure that you have a strong OVERALL profile and that you properly "market yourself" to each individual School that you apply too. You're ultimately asking Admissions questions, so you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:
