Thank you bb for confirming. It is quite heavy, so doesn't move while writing. I have been using it for my practice tests and does a descent enough job.

I have a physical whiteboard that is white on one side but has grids on the other. Is it acceptable for the test?

For the folks in India who are having a tough time sourcing the fine EXPO markers, I found a pretty decent alternative the other day - Add Gel Softline White Board Pen

They're available on Amazon India but unfortunately, I can't post links just yet.

Anyway, at 10 bucks a pen they're perfect for practice.

For the online GMAT, I used:
-Acrylic whiteboard
-Bic Velleda Fine Whiteboard Dry Erasable Pens*2
-Whiteboard eraser

I love my acrylic board because it is hard and can be used in many angles without always having to be flat on the table. Plus it is perfectly white on both sides. Make sure to buy a round one as a square one can be quite sharp at its angles.

The bic Velleda pens are just perfect (except the black one which is harder to Erase). I really like the feel when writing and they are fine enough to write naturally and in quantity.

I selected an eraser with no marking and no branding on it.

Remember to show everything, both sides of the board, both sides of the eraser, your desk and surroundings, even your ears before the exam and at the end of the break. Both sides of the board before taking the break as well.
With all this, the exam goes well and validation goes smoothly.

Hi everyone,

I am planning to retake my GMAT from home in a month and received my whiteboard today.
The front side is perfect but the backside is brownish cardboard. (Sorry can’t post a picture here yet)

Will that work? Or does it have to be white from both sides?

Also I’ve read the positive reviews on the thin white magnetic sheets, has anyone used that one during the actual exam?

Agreed. I used Add Gel Softline too for practise and they are the cheapest option for dry erase pens I could find. I also found these dry erase pens from LifeKraft pretty good and they had finer tip than the Add Gel ones. The EXPO markers were pretty expensive and not easily available and had long shipping duration to India. So I ended up using the LifeKraft pens and they served pretty well.

For all the German/ Austrian Test Takers:
I had good experience with the GMAT "Kit" from amazon - it includes a (thin) whiteboard, pen and eraser...
Its great for table-top use and easily erasable - good conditions for the online test!

I scored a 700 (Q47, V39). I did use the whiteboard for all my mock test (gave 4 of the GMAC ones) and also used it during practice for Quant. I was not comfortable with the online whiteboard. Initially while suing the physical whiteboard I realised that I was using up too much space and was worried on cleaning up the board many times during the test, but practicing on the board really helped to get used to it and time it without getting distracted from the question on screen :)
Regarding the online GMAT, I did have a glitch because of network outage due to power cut (yes, I freaked out!) at the mid of my Quant but luckily my session got restored to the same question in a few minutes. The only other surprise for me was that my Quant section ended abruptly even when there were 30 seconds still left on the clock, so that left my last question unanswered :(

At what point of the online test am I allowed to start writing on the whiteboard? Will I be able to put down a grid for verbal and my timing overview before the timer starts in the first section?

Unfortunately not that I am aware of. You are supposed to show your whiteboard before the test starts and I don't think you would have the time/opportunity to draw the grid (which the grid is very helpful - I drew one during my test-cetner test). Maybe it changed a bit (will definitely change in April when the new rules are coming out). Anyone who took the test recently can share when they started using the whiteboard?

The test center rules forbid any writing during breaks or before starting. Rationally, GMAC may be enforcing similar rules for the online test. I would not risk writing anything on the whiteboard. There is greater chance that the test will be cancelled by the proctors.

Hi all! Personally i struggle with writing near the edges of anything that's raised - like the edges of a page in a notebook, or i'd imagine on the edges of a whiteboard that's designed to be wall mounted.

So, to select something that's thin, are we allowed to use products such as this?

Technically a sheet is not a board per se, so I can see it potentially causeing the proctor to struggle but if you have the other one handy then you should be covered. I would get both and swap out if you run into any kind of questions.

2. Are we allowed time to prepare our board (e.g. sketch out the timing table) prior to the start of the exam or do we have to just eat some clock preparing the timing in the corner, say?
3. Agree/disagree that the lack of grid lines is problematic for coordinate geometry?

1. Hm... most boards come with an eraser... frankly any will do but you can’t use a napkin. Has to be a normal eraser.

2. You must have a blank whiteboard at the start of your test... unfortunately 😢

3. The official scratch paper (laminated sheets) do not have lines. Back in the day they just gave letter-size white sheets at the test center.... so you will have to deal with it. But coordinate geometry is pretty rare. https://gmatclub.com/forum/what-is-test ... 44670.html

Thanks b. For 2, what's the best way to quickly create choices a - e on the whiteboard without having to write each of the letters out for 30+ choices? Call me old school but I like to be able to cross off choices.
