I know this is very lengthy, but I would like to get a comprehensive evaluation of my entire profile and suggestions to improve my chances at Tuck and to secure a scholarship. Please evaluate.

Thank You!

Hi Varun,

That's a great profile, and thanks for the detailed description. It helps to understand where you stand.

You meet quite a few of the admissions criteria for top b-schools. A few commendable things in your profile are:
1. a solid GPA and GMAT score (just wondering if you took the online GMAT).

2. Your work experience puts you in a common Indian applicant pool, but I see several instances that point to taking initiatives, making an impact and showcasing our leadership skills- this is super important for submitting a strong application. One word of caution here is that you must present these elements in a competitive manner. For example, applicants tend to focus their resumes and essays on the technical aspects and responsibilities, failing to mention the dollar impact of their work. However, the fact is, its these elements that can separate you from the rest in your pool and show you to be a leader above your peer group.

3. Your short term goal of becoming a PM is well aligned with your current career. I haven't got much clarity into the long term goals though. Are you doing something around blockchain now, and it that a continued interest that will carry over in the short term and long term? Or is there interest in blockchain only because you are doing a course on it? That's not reason enough to pursue it in the long run. As I said, we'll need to understand this better, and I would be happy to schedule a telephonic discussion with you on this aspect.

4. Your extracurricular activities are solid. It will make sense to only mention the most relevant and impactful ones in your resume.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your critical feedback. Will keep your suggestions noted. Appreciate ya

Hello miglanisahil6,
Your expected GMAT score is less than average for Tuck. Additionally, coming from an overrepresented pool (Indian male engineer), you may also want to score above average for making your profile competitive.
Your experience is a little diverse from your competition, so you may have an edge there. However, it will depend on how well you are able to communicate your leadership and other experiences in your essays. Your EC tie well with your WE. You will need to be more specific about your goals though. IB and PE are too diverse. Again, you will need an impactful story to convey this career transition.
To summarize, chances of your success lie in a great GMAT score and a very compelling application.
Hope this helps.

*Background*

Overview:
I’m looking to bring a strong sense of purpose in my career by transitioning fully to social impact. I’ve always wanted to go into social impact full-time, but I needed to build a niche and valuable skillset before doing so. Regarding marketable skills, I feel ready now, but I need an MBA to help me transition.

Work experience:
I'm currently a Product Manager in Internet Business in a Multinational Telecommunications company. I have 5.5 years of full-time experience, all in Telecommunications product management. The firm I work for is one of the top ones in my country, Bangladesh, and is a part of the 10th largest mobile network operator in the world. I've gotten regular, formal awards (Marketing Award for six quarters out of the twelve quarters of my employment till date + Employee of the month multiple times) at work and my portfolio has increased with time. I can back my achievements with solid numbers.

Some career highlights
- Successful completion of 1-month international assignment & placement in HQ
- Former Management Trainee with fast track progression to Managerial role, within only 2.5 years of my career
- Project Manager for the first telecom merger in Bangladesh
- Product Manager for Facebook's Freebasics program in Bangladesh, which focuses on giving internet connectivity to the bottom of the pyramid, launching it for the first time in my country

On the side, I'm a director at my family business which focuses on government and non-profit sector consulting. I do business advisory for non-profits, and one of these non-profits was founded by a Harvard Kennedy alum and an Oxford Said MBA alum. My area of expertise is "mobile tech & communications for development".

Extracurriculars:
During my undergrad, I won multiple international & national awards in social entrepreneurship competitions. One of that was GSEC organized by the University of Washington's Foster School of Business. My team had beat out MIT in that competition. I was also awarded by Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, for winning Yunus Centre's social entrepreneurship idea competition. I've coordinated nationwide charity drives back in my undergrad, 100+ people reporting to me.

Other coursework:
I finished MBA Math and I scored 100% in all of the MBA Math courses.

Nationality: Bangladeshi

Sex: Male

*Stats*

GRE & TOEFL Score:
My GRE total is 328, with a breakdown of 169 in Verbal, 159 in Quant, 4.5 in AW. I'm also done with my TOEFL with a 113/120.
I plan to resit the GRE to raise my Quant, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make the time for it.

Undergrad GPA:
I graduated from the best business school in my country. My alma mater has alums in top business schools all over the world, including the business schools that I plan to apply to.

My 3.13/4 CGPA (Major- Finance) is measly though. I dived into ECAs during my first two years, achieving great success at the expense of my academics. Reprioritized and did very well in academics during my third year. During my fourth year, I contracted Hepatitis E just before my final exams, and my CGPA took a nosedive. My last year’s GPA was 3/4 versus my third year’s GPA of 3.7/4. I had the choice of postponing my studies for a year or taking a bad hit to my CGPA, & I chose the latter due to financial reasons. Anyways, even after taking my horrible fourth year in account, my last two years' CGPA is 3.35/4, so there is an upward trend there.

*MBA Info*

Goal of MBA:
Working in social impact on the side has actually inspired me to enter social impact full-time post-MBA, perhaps joining my family's business on a full-time basis, and/or starting a sister organization to the family business focused on my area of expertise. My area of expertise, Telecommunications, is very important for social impact in my country, Bangladesh. Our internet connectivity is almost entirely mobile communications dependant.

Working in a large private organization has not given me the training I need to embark on an entrepreneurial venture or engage full-time in expanding a family business. I need an MBA to make me ready.

Hey! I would be really grateful if anyone can evaluate my profile.

Why I want an MBA: Short term goal is to transition into strategy/general management to work with highly driven team, explore how organizations formulate strategies and learn more about business. Long term goal, entrepreneurship, I want to work in Central Asia, specifically the Silk Route, develop the long lost art and work with artists around this route. Why specifically Central Asia, since I'm based in Afghanistan, I had privilege to see the long lost art that has been shadowed by the decades of war. I want to contribute to the emerging economy of Afghanistan.

Why I want one now: I believe that I have had leadership roles but I need more grooming and need to learn about management, strategies and network to different individuals.

Target schools: LBS, Tuck, Yale SOM, Duke, HEC Paris.

Background

Work experience: Teach For India Fellow - 2 years (similar to Teach For America)
Director Fundraising, Teach For Afghanistan - 1 year based in Kabul, Afghanistan
Independent Consultant for 1 year - India/ Kabul, Afghanistan
Operations Head and EA to the CEO - Social Enterprise unit of USAID in Kabul, Afghanistan (1 year)

My experience has mostly been into not for profit and social impact across two countries Indian and Afghanistan.

GRE score: will give it a week, expecting 320+

Extra curricular : Professional Mountaineer, Actively involved in Startup eco-sphere in Afghanistan, documentary photographer.

Undergrad school/major: Bachelors in Engineering. I have an hons degree - 7.89/10 CGPA

Nationality: Indian

Age and Sex: 27 Female

International Experience: Based in Afghanistan since two years.

Languages: I'm fluent in 5 languages (English, Urdu, Persian, Punjabi and Kashmiri)

Concerns: I'm unsure about the schools and the round I should apply in. I got rejected in R3 INSEAD for January 2021, may be due to huge influx of applicants and deferral. I was recommended by INSEAD Alum to admission team. Now, I'm bit scared now to apply in other schools. Concerned about the high competitive pool of Indians.

Can you please suggest which schools I should focus based on my profile, safe schools and ambitious schools?

Thanks!

Hi afrahgmat,

You are a strong fit for a program such as Tuck and many others in both Europe and USA that would value your 1. social experience; 2. your international experience. I haven't heard of any Indians going to Afghanistan to lead social impact assignments and I believe that's a real differentiator in your profile. I'll assume you'd have chances to make a solid impact on the education front in the country given how schooling has suffered from the political unrest. That said, I am a little confused about the chronology of your Agghanistan experience. Are you currently working with USAID? What's your role like in this capacity?

Its unfortunate that INSEAD did not work out in our favor, and there could be several factors for that outcome, but I can assure you you have a competitive profile. 325- 330 is about the average GRE at most of the top business schools, and if you can get a score in this range, you will be solid. Do go through this list of GRE scores I have compiled for some of the top b-schools: https://mbadecoder.com/gmat-gre-scores-for-top-mba-programs/

One thing I am not aligned with is your long term career goal. If you wish to become an entrepreneur to help artisans preserve their dying art, why would you wait for the long term (8-10 years from now)? Why not now or immediately after MBA (although that may not be viable given the cost burden of an MBA). A lot of artisans may have closed shop by the time you are ready to help them. So think deeper about your goals and what makes sense. We'd be happy to have a discussion around your profile and goals. Feel free to reach to me at contact@mbadecoder.com

Hi, I would really appreciate some assistance with evaluating my profile for Tuck.

Background:
27 year old Indian IT engineer from a non-target school (kind of – I am an Electrical and Telecommunications engineer but don't think adcoms are going to care about that trifling distinction, so for all practical purposes I guess I am an ORM).
Education:
Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Telecommunications from a non-target school in India. (GPA: 3.4-3.7 contingent on the conversion tool used)
Masters of Science in Management Information Systems (straight after undergrad) from a 50+ ranked business school in Chicago. (GPA: 3.4)

Work Experience:
I have been working for a mid-sized (~10,000 employees) Credit Risk Solutions Company in US for 4 years. I started out as a Business Intelligence analyst in the Regulatory & Operations space [Intern (9 months), Analyst (1 year), Sr Analyst (1 year)]. In this role, I had the opportunity to work with senators, congressmen, regulators, and federal law enforcement along with working with the C-suite of my company. I also worked with the Operations teams of some large retail banks. I also led an international project on outsourcing a fraud operations team to LATAM and Asia.

Last year I switched roles internally (with a promotion) to the Credit Risk Strategy & Solutions Consulting team.As a Credit Risk Consultant, I primarily work with retail financial institutions (national and regional banks, fintechs, credit unions, etc) on a diverse set of projects and am responsible for helping my clients with growth strategy, credit risk management and expansion, portfolio benchmarking and acquisitions, post-merger risk assessment, etc. I also work with asset management firms on portfolio evaluation, target identification, long-short positions, credit market research, debt asset securitization etc. I have some international exposure in this role for some research studies (Asia). I have had significant exposure to working with CEOs, CFOs, etc of large financial institutions and experience in leading workstreams and engagements. I have also been instrumental in the practice, business, and solution development components for my practice. I have personally been responsible for generating ~$1M in revenues for my practice. In the past 6 months, we have had significant attrition on the team leading me to do all the work of a Director. As a result, I have an upcoming promotion to Senior Consultant/Manager promised for this year-end (which I can probably kiss good-bye thanks to the covid cutbacks).

GMAT:
760 (Q51, V41, IR 6, AWA 6)

Extracurriculars:
Significant leadership experiences throughout undergrad and grad school. I was the President of the Student Body in undergrad and the President on the Non-profit consulting club in grad school. Post-graduation I have been a part (non-leadership position) of a non-profit focused around financial literacy for marginalized students (2 years) and been on the Board of Directors of the non-profit consulting club of a large state school in the Midwest (3 years).
I was also in the varsity basketball, ping pong, and cricket teams in undergrad. Currently, I still participate in local leagues for all of the above.

Post MBA goal:
Management consulting in the financial services domain. Ideally at one of MBB. I would love to be a part of either the Banking/ Financial Services Risk Dynamics practice at McKinsey or the Deals practice at Bain. Backup would be the Deals practice at PWC or financial services consulting at Oliver Wyman.

Questions:
1. Would Tuck be a target or a reach with my profile?
2. Would applying to Round2 as opposed to Round1 make a significant difference?
3. What are areas of my profile I can highlight to strengthen my candidature for Tuck?
4. Are there any visible weaknesses in my profile that I need to work on?
5. I also have ambiguities in choosing my recommenders. My manager quit 5 months ago (taking a letter of recommendation from her) so my new manager and I have not had a large amount of time to build a great relationship and have a powerful letter. Would it weaken my application if I chose to take my second letter of recommendation from a manager from 2 years ago or from my current manager? What should be my preferene?

Hi whoisvek

On the surface, your profile looks great. Great stats with a strong GMAT. About applying in R1, go for it only if you think you can present a good application before Sep 28, the deadline for R1. Otherwise, go for R2 as it will give you enough time to prepare applications and then for visa processing and other stuff.(not a very significant difference but definitely going early is an advantage).

Your work experience, too, seems like a good one. A quantitative background with a deep experience working with the government and C-suite professionals (you can bring the narrative of your learnings from these high-profile experiences and how they have shaped your personality and skills in work). Also, you have significant career progressions, international exposure, leadership (of leading the international project), and impact in your profile. Plus, really great leadership experiences through your ECs and it’s really good that you still pursue your hobbies.

Overall I think you have a fair chance of making it to Tuck, provided you present a persuasive application. I would suggest you bring the ‘ambitious’ aspect in your Post-MBA goals as to the kind of positions you want to reach in your chosen industry. About recommenders, I would say choose one who can tell about the qualities you possess and the kind of person you are in your work very comprehensively because the motto is to get a second person opinion about you. Additionally, make sure you list down the gaps that you have identified in your profile that you think an MBA from Tuck will help you fill in order to achieve your post-MBA goals. If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances further. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Lots of involvement in proposal work and firm work outside of our client team.

My research was published in a reputable academic journal during undergrad.

two very strong LOR's from my direct supervisor and his supervisor, tailored specifically to the schools.

Demonstrated Interest:
Multiple touchpoints with Tuck over the last year - several informational events, coffee chats with students and Luke Pena, and a virtual class visit.

Extracurriculars:
Lead technology volunteer for a mid-sized 501(c)(3) focused on helping women studying to go into STEM fields. Very solid history of dedicated work elevating female voices in STEM throughout and after undergrad. Various officer positions in undergrad. Very involved in rehabbing / training ex-racehorses during and after undergrad.

Nationality:
Dual Citizen USA & Canada
Mixed Race: White & Taiwanese

Sex: Female

Undergrad GPA:
3.6, cum laude, departmental highest honors

*MBA Info*

Goal of MBA:
Transition from consulting to tech, I won't go in depth here but I have a very cohesive story tying my STEM background and current consulting / business experience into my short and long term future goals in technology.

Tuck is my first choice school. I submitted before the 9/1 deadline and have my interview next week, and have really focused on demonstrating consistent interest in the program.

GRE: 321 159Q & 162V Will retake, trying to get my quant up but trying to apply in round 1 so may not get a score in before round 1 deadline.

Work experience and leadership: Current role is an enterprise SaaS sales for a "Forbes Next Billion Dollar Startup" company. Started with the company as one of the first non engineering hires. Came in with general directions to "grow the business" and was doing everything from demos with the CEO, cold calling, marketing events, go to market strategy, market segmentation exercises, setting up CRM etc. Switched over to full time sales as the company became more mature and structured. Previously I was an excel monkey I wanted to work on softer skills thus the switch. AE of Year, broken into 4 new markets, brought in $8M in recurring revenue, responsible for training new hires. Study abroad and typical college honor societies etc. Volunteer with my dog at the local veterans home. Pre covid work had me on the road 75%+

Why MBA? Career pivot. Went startup route after college and looking to pivot back into my first love of finance.

Post MBA goals: Immediately after graduation either a IB associate or equity research role. Long term dream is to land a position at a smaller value/ market neutral hedge fund.

Hi WM88,

I have evaluated your profile before and would love to do it again for Tuck. I think I already have summarised good points of your profile, so here I will be pinpointing some major hiccups of your profile. First, your slightly lower GPA. I think you have very strong and relevant reasons for the same and you should definitely bring them up. And the good part is you have achieved a 4.0 in one semester which somewhere shows that you do have academic rigor in you (and 3.4 is anyway not that low). Now about GRE, it is good if you can retake the exam and try to level-up the score. So, I want to understand why do you want to apply only in R1. FYI, if you are weighing the pros-cons of R1 and R2, it is always good to apply with a stronger GRE/GMAT in R2 than a weaker score in R1. Now I think your work experience and ECs are great and I have talked about it earlier. One other thing that I would bring to your notice is do you have any previous experience in finance, maybe during college or anywhere you can show the evidence of your interest in this field? Otherwise, your short-term and long-term goals make sense to me.

So, overall, I would reiterate that you have a sound profile and with an interesting story you can ace the game! We are happy to discuss further your chances and would love to hear your story. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi shieldsforsure,

Your profile looks great. You have good stats for Tuck and I liked the fact that you have managed to level your score up by 90 points in just three attempts. Your work-ex is very straightforward in one industry and exhibits almost every value and quality that Tuck looks for. You seem to be a mature leader and you have worked for big names which implies your endeavors should have some huge impacts in the industry. Your ECs, too, brings out a compassionate person and an aware leader (assuming through your roles in political campaigns). Your post-MBA goals look good and relevant. So, overall I say you tick all the boxes and one major box that needs to be checked is crafting an awesome story that brings a real you in the applications. We are happy to discuss further your chances and would love to hear your story. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi, and thanks for writing! You have a well-rounded profile, with progressive work experience and meaningful extracurricular involvement. What is your post-MBA goal?

Since competition is so fierce for Indian applicants, I would take GMAT again, targeting 160+ for each section. Aside from that, the way to maximize your chances is to fully convey your professional and personal impact on your resume and in your application, explain the motivation behind your career goals, and make a strong case for why Tuck is a strong fit for you based on its culture and resources within and outside of the classroom.
