Hello varuns28

USC Marshall will evaluate your candidature holistically on 4 factors-
1. Academic Potential- Will you be able to handle the pressure of the program. You past scores + GMAT will help them judge you on this. Since your past scores are not stellar, you will have to compensate that with a strong GMAT score (720+). Indians are anyway expected to score high on the GMAT.
2. Quality of Work Ex- You have mentioned years and industry. But more than that the school is interested to know your story. What has been you career progress and what are your key achievements. With your work ex they will expect to see maturity of thought in the essays.
3. Clarity of Goals- This is the most critical part of your application. Why MBA & Why USC? Moving into management consulting after 8 years of work ex may be tough. Also since you have a PGDM, you should give compelling answers to why you need a second MBA?
4. Diversity- What is your differentiating factor? How will your peers benefit and learn from your presence? Showcase that in your essays.
To conclude, as step 1 no doubt pump up your GMAT. Step 2 how you tie up the above mentioned 4 factors in your written application will decide the outcome.

Hello All,
I would like to have my profile evaluated. I just took the GMAT in June and am ready to apply for business school in Fall 2019. Here is my information:
GMAT: 710 (50Q/34V/6 IR) Have not received my AWA score yet
GPA: ~ 3.37 (over a 3.5 my last year)
Degree: BA Economics, UCLA. Transfer GPA - 3.8
Experience: 2 years as an analyst at a real estate investment company(1 year at current firm). Work in both acquisitions (acquired 3 hotels for $150mm since I started) and asset management (6 of our current hotels, and 135 hotels for a third party). Had previous internship experience in PWM.
Extracurricular: Over 700 hours working as a volunteer at the local hospital, as a tutor, and as a coach for middle school children. No experience in professional leadership/managerial roles. Was a member of Ski and Snowboard team in college. Mentor a student at UCLA. High School Valedictorian.
Background: Indian (born and raised in California). 25 years old. Typical middle class story for a kid in Orange County.
What I want from business school: First, I would like to work in finance, either in real estate acquisitions, PWM, or VC/PE. I would like to gain both the professional and personal skills that business school can provide. Finally, I need a change in my life.
Letters of Rec: Plan on asking my CIO and an Associate at my current company for my two recommendations. I also have my previous employer in case. Do not have a professor at UCLA I can ask since I did not spend a lot of time in office hours.
Other: The one issue which will make things difficult is that I was accused of cheating in college. I received academic probation and I'm sure I will have to discuss what happened. I would like some feedback whether this is a automatic red flag. It was a mistake and I've grown from it, but I am sure it will leave a mark.

Thank You,

Undergrad: Indiana University - Kelley School of Business. Major: Economic Consulting, GPA: 3.84

Hello jomregan

Kudos to planning ahead, it is always recommended to do so as you can spend the next 3 years really building your profile and improve your chances of admission significantly.
Your GPA is good, however, since you have time, I would suggest if you can retake the GMAT to get a higher score of 730+.
Will not comment much on the work ex front, as you have just begun. Focus on not just your technical responsibilities, but also the real business impact that your work has.
University extracurricular look good- show long term commitment and how have you gained transferable skills that make you a better person/professional.
Post MBA goals however, look a bit unpolished and yu should be more specific what sort of venture, why is an MBA an absolute necessity.
To conclude- improve your GMAT + work your ass off and show career progression/achievements + show impact of extracurricular on your life in the next few years.
You could read more on how to spend the next 2-3 years here or Plan your MBA early as it takes 12-18 months of work before an admission result.
