Your profile is pretty solid. We have NIFT students in the current batch as well. The question that the panel will ask you (considering you get an interview call ) is Why MBA? That should be very clear in your mind. Also, try to get a GMAT score as close to 700 as possible. And make sure that your learnings are reflected well in your essays. That’s my two cents!

680 gives you a decent chance. Why I say 700 is because the institute will try to maintain a certain average. If you fall too below, it would have to find a candidate with a higher GMAT to maintain its average. I suggest that take your time with the GMAT. Whether you take the exam in December or March or August for that matter is the same. You won’t be applying this year anyway. So why rush? Instead, work on making your profile as strong as possible by getting a higher score on the GMAT. If you find 2 hours every weekday and 4/5 hours on weekends, in 3-6 months you can easily get 720-730

Hi,
About me:
I have 10 years of experience in software development, designing and architecting. 5 years of experience in managing people, project and product to varied degrees. In both of my stints above I have stood up things from ground up be it software, teams or products.

Goal:
I am considering to get a degree from reputed business institutes, like IIM or ISB. The core goal is to have formal education on business and finance side. This I believe will help boost my career. Can someone in this group help me with following questions please?:
1) Do comment on my goals or aspirations. Does it make sense? With all due respect, where is the career goal my friend? You have mentioned you want formal education in business and finance to boost your career. Boost your career into what positions? Which organizations? What is the short term goals immediately after an MBA? What is the long term vision of your career? You've not mentioned your goals, so tough to say whether they sound realistic or not.
2) What are the positions offered to candidate after completing programmes like IIMA-PGPX, IIMC-PGPEX and IIMB-EPGP? That is a very broad question, but most people from software may end up in Product Management, IT consulting, Project Management etc. Some may change roles and move into Pre-Sales, Solutions Architect etc. You should see where your interest and abilities lie.
3) With 15 years of experience(and practically by the time I get admission it would be 15+) what do you think is the best course that I can choose? With 15 years, the likes of IIMB might be tough from a profile perspective. They prefer to admit peoples with 5-12 years of ex. (no hard cutoff though). But a good program for you is not judged just on profile but also on career goals. With 15 years of work ex, your goals will decide the right program for you. IIMA and IIMC admit students with extensive work ex so that works, but 'years' is just one small part of your profile and there are several other factors at play. You may want to read here on the factors that matter in your written application and here on career goals.

With Best Regards,
Praveen

Thanks a lot MBAkarma for your reply. This definitely clears few questions.

I want my future career goals for short term to be product owner, product manager or may be Business Development Manager. I eventually like to grow into being Exec VP to CTO long term. Sorry for getting you confused, my bad.

Every college specifies the date till which it would consider work-ex and hence calculate the duration. In Indian context(1 yr course context), IIMs take work ex upto 31st March for the current job i.e. for this year's admission the work-ex cut off date shall be 31st march 2019.

Hello kvishwa1987

With decent past grades, international experience, years of work ex in the right spot all seem to work in your favor.
If you score above 700+, you have no glaring weakness evident in the quantitative aspects of your profile.
However, qualitative aspects will matter too- such as career progress, achievements at work and extracurricular, career goals (very important) and how you chose to tie your past, present and future with the need of an MBA.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello kvishwa1987,

Thanks for writing in.

In terms of your overall profile, with your international experience - academic and professional (with top players in your field), you have much going for you, provided you are able to present your achievements and skills in an appropriate manner through your essays.

We suggest that you aim for a score above 700; the higher the score, the better, of course. The same, along with a set of well-written essays that portray a logical set of career goals, wherein the short-term and long-term goals not only link up with each other but also with your experience, will give you a good chance at making it to the program at IIM A.

Should you feel the need for a detailed discussion, feel free to reach out to us.

All the best!

Hello vishnusm

Generally speaking, if you can get a score above the average of the class (that is approx. 710+ for IIM A/B/C), you will be in a position to negate the average past scores.
However, GMAT is not the only factor in admissions.
Work experience, extracurricular and career goals all make up a strong profile.
Work experience looks decent on paper- running your own venture and international experience could potentially help (if presented well). Focus on the depth of experience by talking more around career progress, achievements and impact.
Extracurricular is missing and cannot comment on that.
However, most importantly, career goals are missing- this is the most important piece of the admission puzzle and any profile evaluation is incomplete without this info.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.
